This morning found me at La Bou for the weekly Tuesday coffee morning for those of us who have no trouble getting out early. Today there were nine of us hardy souls. Attendance can fluctuate each week as there is no obligation to attend and not everyone can always make it every week. Sometimes vacations are scheduled, after all, grandchildren need to be spoiled, and other obligations come up that may keep some of us away for awhile. We occasional-ly have new faces appear and we always hope they will become regulars. But most of the "usual suspects" were present this morn-ing. We had just seen and talked with one another the night before at our March general meeting, yet, we greeted each other like we had not communicated in months. Tables and chairs were shifted and rearranged so we had a cozy, close setting. We shared what we had done the past weekend and what is going on in our lives with our families and friends. We even had our small version of "Show and Tell". And on this particular Tuesday, all the placemats that had been turned into Community Service the night before were counted and admired before being taken and delivered to "Meals On Wheels".

You may ask what is the purpose of this bit of nothing I am writing about. Well, these coffee mornings last about an hour to ninety minutes. And when we disperse I take away a feeling of well being as I begin to attend to my day. This bit of respite from the flotsam and jetsam of daily life give me a chance to reflect on the value of friendship and my need for connection with women who share some of my interests and core values of life.

The time and place of Tuesday morning coffee is printed in every newsletter, every month. Come and have coffee with us. It can be cheap, yet, very valuable therapy. I recommend it.

The row for March consists of 7 six -inch blocks . Instructions were given for “Square within a Square”, "Orange Peel", which is an appliqué onto of an “Square within a Square”, and an “Egg-Yolk Flower”. The latter two can be hand or machine appliquéd. In April, we will be working on the center block. If you have a theme you might want to do something different this month. For exam-ple, if your theme is patriot, you might want to appliqué stars on the 6” blocks. For those of you who might never have appliquéd, I afford to help you on March 21st, which just so happens to be our community service day at the church. Nancy Cowell invited us to use a table in the Fellowship Hall, which I thought was a great idea. So anyone who wants help with appliquéing or just want to sew bring your materials and machine. Community Service is really happening, thanks to all of you. We received 17 quilts and 22 pillow-cases at our last meeting. The placemats, preemie quilts and stockings are pouring in too. Keep up the good work!

Tuesday, March 21st is our next workday, at the Shepard of the Sierras Fellowship Hall, from 9:30am to 3:00pm. Our focus will be putting together quilt kits for long arm and home machine quilt-ers. We have over 50 quilt tops that need to be packaged with batting and backs. Please bring a machine to piece backs or to sew our quilt labels to quilt tops. If you do not want to bring your ma-chine, come and help sandwich the quilt kits, cut stockings, or help create placemats. There are plenty of ladies who can show you how to do any of these tasks. You are also welcome to drop by for a quick visit to check out the action.

Barbara Oliver, our Block of the Month creator, is going to be conducting her appliqué tutorial in the Fellowship Hall. Community Service and Block of the Month at the same time! We will have a great day sharing our skills and inter-ests.

We still have a couple of jobs to fill for the quilt show - so grab a friend and volunteer to take care of Show Quilts. You'd be the ones to accept quilt show entries, list them on a simple spreadsheet, and organize them for the show layout team. You'd also be in charge of directing the volunteers the afternoon of the show set-up to hang the quilts. Most of the work is done in the two months before the show, and none of it is hard. Mary Franz has volunteered to make the quilt tags for the show. Quilt Show committee meetings are once a month beginning in March, at 6:30pm on the 4th Tuesdays at Sierra View Country Club in Roseville. The other job we need to fill is the Property position - Connie Donohue had volunteered for it, but found she's going to be traveling too much and at the wrong times to do the job right. Connie and I are going to get together during the year to better organize the storage shed, though, which should make it easier. After that, the main task will be to direct the volunteers who will drive the U-Haul truck and load it up to bring the quilt racks and other show equipment the afternoon of set-up. We have wonderful volunteers and will have a good list of what needs to be moved so it's not a difficult job at all. It's an important one, though, because without the racks we can't have a show. So either give me a call, shoot me an email, or wait until the March meeting when the pressure is really on.

It’s never to soon to start thinking about the quilts you would like to enter into the 2017 Pioneer Quilt Show. Our members have an amazing amount of talent and creativity and we would like for everyone to participate in the 2017 show. I will be the Show Quilt Chairperson this year and encourage everyone to share their tal-ent with the public. It’s time to start or finish that special quilt you are or have been working on.

In June we will start collecting the Quilt Show Entry Forms. There will be a drawing for two $25 gift certifi-cates to local quilt shops for those of you who turn in turn in an entry form at that time. Entry forms are locat-ed on the website for you to download and complete.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s beautiful creations.

The meeting was called to order at 6:35 PM by President Martha Overman. Those in attendance were: Martha Over-man, Fran Claassens, Barbara Victorino, Sally Vandervort, Kathy Griffin, Diane Hamilton, Anna Morillas Kathy Black and Nancy Colwell. The minutes of the last board meeting were approved as printed in the Newsletter. Old Business: The dedicated emails for Officers and committee members are now activated on our Guild website. This should be a much more secure way for our officers to communicate with the “outside world”, in not having their own per-sonal emails available. New Business: Nancy Colwell, Community Service Chair was present at our meeting, to inform us that she has purchased a storage cabinet for the Fellowship Hall. The cost is $542.79 and it has been budgeted under Community Service. Since it has been purchased with guild funds, it is our property and not that of Shepherd of the Sierras. It will be very useful for our community service days, in having supplies like irons, cords, and kits readily available without members having to haul these items back and forth from their homes. Nancy pointed out that these items could also be shared for guild work-shops, and the Guild retreats, so that we do not have an overlap of items purchased. She feels that having our work-shops in Fellowship Hall might be less expensive than in the Church sanctuary, as it is already set up for these kinds of functions, and we would not be having to pay a setup fee, as we have been doing when they are held in the Church. The fee for the use of Fellowship Hall is $75. Nancy asked about the possibility of the board “sponsoring” the April Community Service day, as several of the usual attendees (including herself) will not be available to attend, due to Mt Hope Quilt Retreat that week. The board agreed to this task. She also informed us that the Premie Quilt group would like to display some of their little quilts at our next gen-eral meeting. The Board approved. Colleen Voet and Connie Donohue have been working diligently to secure a more reasonably priced storage unit for the guild. Additionally, they have begun a serious and organized cleaning of our current space and would like to purchase appropriate storage containers to make the area more efficient, allowing us to have a smaller space, which would be less expensive for the Guild. They will be seeking approval from the general membership to spend an additional $500, which was not in their original budget forecast. The Board has been asked to provide a raffle basket for the November Quilt Show and all agreed that we will participate in that effort. Themes were discussed, but no firm decision has been made. Martha will discuss these potential themes with Karen Ostiguy, who chairs the basket raffle for the Quilt Show. Martha announced that Valerie Price has agreed to be the “Show Quilts” Chairperson for the Quilt Show. On Monday February 17th, there was a flood evacuation in Placer County and people gathered at the Placer County Fairgrounds. We were asked to donate quilts and pillowcases to those in need. 10 pillowcases and 4 quilts were provid-ed. It has been noted that on the NCQC website, Pioneer Quilters’ Guild is listed as a member, but in the description area for our guild, there is no information. Patty Clausen will be asked to take care of the issue by contacting NCQC, to make sure they have all of the contact information, etc. that should be on their website. Several members have asked that Barbara Victorino bring her President’s Appreciation quilt to the next general meeting for display. She has agreed to that request. There will be a dinner prior to our next general meeting, with our speaker and workshop presenter, Christine Barnes. All board members are invited and encouraged to attend. It will be held at Brookfields in Roseville and Taylor Road and Eureka, at 5:00 PM. There was discussion about our new website and the fact that some of our members are encountering difficulty in navi-gating it. It was discussed that possibly, Emily Easley could give a presentation to the members, clarifying some of these issues. In the meantime, members will be encouraged to directly email Emily or Christine Westbrook with their specific questions in how to find information on the site. Currently, the photos of the entire membership are not on the website and Martha will contact Emily to request that those photos be included. Having those photos available enables members to become familiar with each other and the Board feels that it is a bonus to have it on there, especially since we have so many new members, the past two years.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Martha Overman. All members as well as guests were welcomed. There were no changes to the February 6, 2017 minutes and they stand as approved, as printed in the Guild newsletter. Vice-President Fran Claassens introduced the visiting guild, Oroville Piecemakers, who were present, to sell tickets on their beautiful Opportunity quilt. Member Nancy Colwell was the recipient of the PQG Service Award and was presented with a lovely “gold” necklace. Nancy has served as Community Service chair for several years and has done outstanding work to streamline and or-ganize how our guild can most efficiently perform our community service efforts. This has resulted in MANY quilts hav-ing been completed and presented to various organizations, as well as having motivated many of our members to partic-ipate in this endeavor. The Guild thanks you, Nancy Colwell! Our President announced that the dedicated Board and Committee Chair email addresses, found on our website, are now active and working. Barbara Victorino was not able to attend this evening, but has promised to bring her President’s gift quilt to the April meeting for the perusal of members.

Vice President Fran Claassens reports that the schedule for 2018 for visiting guilds to bring their Opportunity Quilts for ticket sales, is now filled. Treasurer Kathy Griffin advised us that she has been in touch with Ron Bawden, the Guild’s CPA. He strongly urges the guild to have an active Inventory List of items that the guild “owns”. This will be very beneficial and important for tax pur-poses, and for maintaining our non profit status. She also reports that there have been requests for reimbursement of money for items that were purchased, that had not been given board approval, and that the board feels were unneces-sary expenditures. Discussion followed and it will be strongly emphasized to all committee persons that they must com-ply with the budget that has been approved for their committees. The Members at Large, Kathy Black and Anna Morillas have been approached by a member who feels that our business portion of the general meetings are too lengthy. The Board is aware that this is an ongoing issue, and efforts are made to keep that portion of the meeting at a minimum. However, members are to be advised that our Guild’s purpose is more than entertainment, and that many details are involved in the management of the guild. To maintain our non profit sta-tus, we are required to hold business meetings. We are heavily involved in a Quilt Show and Community Service, both of which require discussion at our monthly meetings. The Board discussed possible ways of speeding up certain por-tions of our meetings. It was decided that for monthly Show and Tell, members will be asked to NOT show Community Service Quilts during that time. Instead, at each meeting, as part of the Community Service report, all members who have brought quilts for that purpose, will be invited to stand simultaneously and show their quilts then. It was also discussed that Committee Chairs are not required to give a report at each General meeting and are encour-aged to use the Newsletter for that purpose, unless they have time sensitive material that needs to be given immediately. Ways and Means Chair, Diane Hamilton reports that signups for showing our Opportunity Quilt, are going well. Her com-mittee will be having sales of sweatshirts and denim shirts with the Guild logo on them. At our next general meeting there will be samples of different sizes for members to try on and individual orders may be placed. The next Executive board meeting will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 6:30 PM at the home of Martha Overman. The next General meeting will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017. Connie Donohue has agreed to take on the position of Guild Property Chairperson. With the assistance of Colleen Voet, she has performed a complete inventory and organization of our storage unit. It is their hope to move everything to a dif-ferent storage facility that will be much more economical. Connie announced that Mary Franz has volunteered to be her “backup”, when she is out of town and unavailable. She requests $300 for containers and organizational supplies. A vote to grant these funds will be taken at the April general meeting. Valerie Price has agreed to take on the position of “Show Quilts Chair”, as part of our Quilt Show Committee. Committee Reports: Community Service Chairperson Nancy Colwell, announced a Premie Quilt display at tonight’s meeting. At this time, the committee has accepted 75 premie quilts, made by our members. She also informed us that the last workshop was very successful. There was a machine quilting demonstration by several of our members, as well as other work being ac-complished including basting of quilts. We now have 75 quilt tops that need to be quilted, as well as labels sewn on them. Dates for upcoming Workshops can be found in the newsletter. It was reported by Pat Callahan that there was a request for pillowcases and quilts from Placer County, during a recent Flood Evacuation. She indicated that 10 pillow-cases and 5 quilts were donated. Treasurer Kathy Griffin advises that there were many members who received refund checks of $12.50 during December (2016). Many of these have not yet been cashed and she urges members who are in possession of these checks, to have them cashed or to notify her if they wish to donate the funds back to the Guild. Barbara Baker, Programs Chair announced that Christine Barnes will be our speaker this evening, entertaining us on the subject of Color. She will be having a color workshop tomorrow.. In April we will have a speaker, Kim Huckabee of Brewer Sewing Company. June will bring Robin Green, from Hoffman fabrics, speaking about batiks. On Tuesday, fol-lowing the June meeting, there will be a workshop given by Sandra Mollan, on mock hand applique. She will have a sample of her work at the April meeting. Quilt Show Chair Colleen Voet announced of behalf of Denise Konar (absent) that she needs volunteers to distribute quilt show postcards to nearby quilt shops and quilt guilds. Colleen took volunteers from the membership and filled all of the positions. Ways and Means Chair Diane Hamilton informed us that shirts and sweatshirts are now being offered, with the Guild logo. Orders can be taken. She had several sizes available for members to try on at the meeting. Prices range from $30 too $40, depending on type and size of shirts. Janet Paehlig, Challenge Coordinator urges members to participate in the Guild Challenge. The fee for this activity is $6. The quilt is to be a story quilt. She is selling embellishments to be used for the quilts. She also showed samples of small story quilts that she has made. More information is available in the newsletter. Barbara Oliver, Block of the Month, reports good participation and interest in this year’s Row Quilt. The March row of-fers 3 options, all of which are in the directions. She offers members to come to her home on March 21st for a demon-stration. Drawings are held at each meeting. To quality for the drawing, members must bring in that month’s completed row. The Mt Hope Retreat will be held from April 18-23, 2017. Co-Chairs Sheila Pond and Kandi Sowle urge members to sign up and join in the wonderful experience that this retreat offers. It is a great way to become better acquainted with fellow guild members. They particularly encourage our new members to participate and take advantage of this fun time! Deadline for signups is April 1st. Barbara Bickford, part of the Community Service team advised that there are handouts with guidelines for the Premie quilts, as well as patterns and batting. Librarian Kim Timms requested that the members who still have books checked out, dating back to 2016, return these books ASAP, so that other members can also enjoy them. There are four of them. President Martha advised the membership that there have been some concerns about the length of our business meet-ings. She reminds members that according to our bylaws, the purpose of our guild is educational, to promote the knowledge of quiltmaking. Additionally, our large focus is to provide quilts, Xmas stockings, place mats, mastectomy pil-lows and pillow cases to those in need, in our Community. We also have a yearly Quilt Show. These endeavors require a certain amount of discussion at our meetings. As a tax exempt organization, we are

required by law, to have business meetings. The Board is looking for ways to streamline our meetings and to shorten them as much as possible. Martha announced that one change that begins immediately, as decided by the Board, is that at our meetings, during Show and Tell, members are asked to no longer show Communi-ty Service Quilts. Instead these quilts will be shown simultaneously, during the Community Service report. She also encourages Committee Chairs to utilize the newsletter as much as possible to provide information to members. They are invited to speak during the business meetings, if their information is of a time sensitive nature. If members have other suggestions for moving our meetings along at a faster pace, they are welcome to contact the Board. Barbara Baker introduced our speaker for the evening, Christine Barnes, who gave a wonderful presentation and slide show on COLOR. Drawings were held for Sew and Sew Raffle, Free Workshop, and Block of the Month. President Martha announced the passing of the husband of member Stephanie Northam. Services will be held this Wednesday March 8th at St Joseph Marello Catholic Church, at 11:00 AM. Our sympathy is extend-ed to Stephanie and her children. The next PQG General Meeting will be held Monday, April 3, 2017 at 7:00 PM. The next Executive Board Meeting will be held Monday, March 27, 2017 at the home of Martha Overman, at 6:30 PM. Northern California, Northern Nevada Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA has an upcoming exhibit that members may be interested in and are invited to come out and see it. This is a good opportunity for quilters to enjoy this innovative work in textiles and perhaps see how their work might find its way into such a show. The SAQA group is growing and has many exciting shows lined up through 2019 providing numerous opportunities.

“On The Fringe: Innovative Art Quilts from California and Nevada”, will be showing at the Harrington Gallery, in Pleasanton from March 9 – April 15, 2017 The show will consist of 21 art quilts, including one from Dr. Sandra Sider, Curator of the Texas Quilt Museum and Juror for this Exhibi-tion. There will also be 5 exceptional fiber sculptures in the show. “On the Fringe” is far from the status quo as possible, with the unique flavor of the West coast. Sandra notes in her comments, “This Exhibi-tion of twenty art quilts exemplifies some of the more interesting work being done today”.The Harrington Galley, Firehouse Art Center is at 4444 Railroad Avenue, Pleasanton, CA. Reception is open to the public, March 11 from 1-3 pm. Sandra Sider will be speaking at 2 pm during the reception. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday, 12-5 pm, Saturday noon-3 PM, a $5 donation to the Gallery is greatly appreciated.
