THE PROBUS CLUB OF HUNTSVILLE

Thursday, February 21, 2019

SUTHERLAND HALL

Meeting 10:00 am Ticket Sales 9:30 am

Kaye Leslie and her Seeing Eye dog Storm have recently moved to Huntsville from Toronto. Kaye’s professional career has ranged from not-for-profit (CNIB) to banking, where she has held leadership roles in Human Resources. She has received multiple awards for her volunteer work and advocacy for accessibility and employment for people with disabilities. Kaye has performed stand-up comedy, loves skiing, scuba diving, waterskiing, cooking, and music of all kinds. Kaye loves to travel and annually participates in the “Ski For Light” event for blind and disabled skiers.

Kaye feels that becoming a member of PROBUS will be a great opportunity to build relationships with new friends and learn more about all of the activities and cultural events that Huntsville has to offer.

Dr. Peter Tikuisis

Myths and Misconceptions About Humans Exposed to Cold

Our February speaker is Dr. Peter Tikuisis, Emeritus Defence Scientist at Defence Research and Development Canada, Department of National Defence.

Peter served as a scientist throughout his career in human-related research studying decompression sickness “bends”, uptake and elimination of carbon monoxide, shivering response to cold exposure, soldier performance under stress, and the fragility of weak countries. He has held adjunct appointments at the Universities of Waterloo, Toronto and Carleton. Peter developed the Cold Exposure Survival Model used by Search and Rescue organizations for predicting the likely survival time of people accidentally exposed to cold. His talk will cover the symptoms, treatment and prevention of hypothermia in addition to highlighting key misunderstandings of human response to cold.

Our club presently has 199 members with 2 on the waiting list.

The January meeting had 69 members and 1 guest in attendance.

New members Lee and Janet Copland were introduced.

If you have any changes to your address, phone or email information, please advise Janice Elliott at janiceelliott04@gmail.com
