Highest Court in NSW Operates under Supreme Court Act

(1970) and the Civil Procedure Act (2005)

Was established by the Charter of Justice in 1823.

Inside the Court

There are 48 judges, 4 associate judges. Highly experienced solicitors and barristers. Their title is “The Honourable Justice”. They are referred to as “Your Honour” in court. Associate judges deal with trials not involving

a jury. Consists of a Chief Justice, and a number of

senior judges (Justices). Who are appointed by the Governor.

Civil Cases involving amounts of money over $750, 000, involving contracts and torts, equity, probate, admiralty and commercial.

Serious Criminal cases (indictable offences) involving Murder, Treason and Piracy.

Also deal with matters under Commonwealth laws.

Hear appeals from lower courts.
