THE TALL SHIPS RACES SUNDERLAND 2018
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
THE TALL SHIPS RACES

The Tall Ships Races - Europe’s largest, free, family festival
The Tall Ships Races are a unique extravaganza that encourage
international friendship and are underpinned with a proud ethos of
training young people in the art of sailing.
The Tall Ships Races and associated events hold young people,
adventure, social responsibility, environmental awareness and heritage
at their heart. In order to qualify as a racing ship over half of each ship’s
Sail Trainees must be under 25 years of age.
The Races provide an annual stunning display of glamorous vessels and
a fever of festival excitement in beautiful ports across Europe.
The fi rst Tall Ships Race in 1956 was a race of 20 of the world’s
remaining large sailing ships. The race was from Torbay, UK to Lisbon
and was meant to be a last farewell to the era of the great sailing
ships. However, public interest was so intense that the Sail Training
International Race Committee formed a founding organisation and has
since organised The Tall Ships Races and Regattas annually around the
world, attracting hundreds of ships and millions of spectators.
The Tall Ships Races represents a fantastic opportunity for Sunderland
to showcase its rich and diverse heritage, and the city is ready and
waiting to welcome The Tall Ships Races in 2018.
Page 4

A magnifi cent fl eet of up to 80 ships are expected to arrive in
July 2018, creating a stunning spectacle on the banks of the River Wear
and within the prestigious Port of Sunderland, creating easy visiting
and viewing access from the city centre and the seafront.
The Tall Ships Races are expected to attract 1.5 million spectators to the
city over the four day event (11-14 July 2018).
There will be numerous activities and attractions around the city,
ensuring that visitors are absorbed in a festival of culture that celebrates
the city’s maritime and shipbuilding heritage.
The ships will be open for free public access on Wednesday to Friday,
but some of the larger vessels may close as they host exclusive deck
events for which tickets may be purchased, or entire deck events may
be booked.
Each of the four days of the event will off er something diff erent,
keeping the crowds entertained and ensuring that The Tall Ships Races
Sunderland 2018 remains a cherished memory in the minds of visitors
for many years to come.

You can support a young person to get on board and sail to Esbjerg
in Denmark, helping to crew one of the magnifi cent ships setting
sail from the city. As a sponsor you will provide a once in a lifetime
opportunity to the young person, whilst strengthening your own
corporate social responsibility profi le and linking your business to a
fantastic event on an international stage.
The sponsored young person will spend seven nights on-board one of
the participating vessels, experiencing an adventure far out to sea and
working as an essential part of a team. With help from the ships’ crew,
sail trainees learn team and leadership skills, build self-confi dence and
literally learn the ropes.
On completion of the voyage and arrival in Esbjerg, they will take part
in the energetic Crew Parade and Prize-Giving Ceremony before fl ying
back to the UK. Once back in Sunderland they will receive a warm
welcome home from the Mayor.
Many young people who sail in The Tall Ships Races have never sailed
before. They take on a challenge and acquire invaluable life experience
that stays with them for their whole life.
Sunderland Sail Training Ambassador Brandon Barker had his fi rst sailing
experience last year on fully accessible Sail Training Ship Lord Nelson.
“The crew were fantastic and gave everyone the chance to do as much
as they could. Every aspect of sailing the ship was made available, from
setting the sails and going up the mast to taking watch and steering
her. We had a great time and I’m looking forward to getting back on
board as soon as I can. I would encourage anyone thinking about this
to go for it - you won’t regret it!”

undertake a sail training voyage contact Jonathan Kinnair at
