Traditional media displays a static message (even if it’s on TV). A potential customer has to be able to locate you through the clutter.
Online search allows the customer to describe exactly what they want and then a whole list of choices pop-up.

If you don’t know the words your potential client uses to find your services you simply won’t be found.◦ Ask current clients how they found you. If you are
just starting out use one of the many keyword tools available online.

Domains are so important. Use a keyword somewhere in the domain name if at all possible.◦ It’s possible there will be no more .com names
available after 2010 so time is of the essence.

It has to change on a regular basis.

Flash movies can make the most unexciting website look great!
Unfortunately they block search engines and most flash is at the very top of the page.

You have six seconds to convince someone to stay on your site.
Search engine spiders crawl over a page in the same way people do.
Starting at the top left hand corner spiders start indexing so it is the very most important location for keywords.

Unless complete and utter awe at the beauty of your website or blog is the overarching goal you have to consider functionality first.
Are there clickable links from page to page? Do you have to fill out a long form just to ask a question? Is it impossible to figure out what you do?

Just like in offline networking it’s all about the links…the inbound links.
The number you have, and the relevance, of those links matters.

Your company sells periodic tables to high school chemistry teachers. The links should be related to that not party supply stores.
If you have a choice always try for a link from a higher page rank. If a (PR 10) site links to you that’s better than one with a (PR 0).

You must be in charge of your reputation on the internet.
A bad review that shows up in the fourth position on the first page of search requires forty positive entries to overcome it.
SuccessTrafficker 17
Ask your (happy) customers and clients to write reviews on directories and add a lot of stars.
Use Digg, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us, Reddit to bookmark your website and blog entries.

Social media used to be just that: Social. Now search spiders can get through some of those and it makes a difference!
Facebook is a great place to put up a page about your business. FB Fan Pages can be searched by Google.
SuccessTrafficker 19
Twitter is also a huge resource for search. Connecting with a new network is fun just make sure you meet some of these people offline.
LinkedIn is the most business oriented and links people who have worked with each other at different companies .
SuccessTrafficker 20
Search has become localized.
A lot of internet companies want to extend their reach beyond the local area but that is how to get on the maps that show up above organic listings.
Good news? Non-local companies can’t get on the map.
SuccessTrafficker 21
Websites and search optimization require maintenance.
Set aside the time to do it yourself or hire an expert. Otherwise you will become disappointed as you see your hard work fall in search rankings.
