BACKGROUND, CONTINUED To make room for the theater, Caesar

removed several shrines (including the Temple of Pietas) as well as houses.

Augustus purchased additional land at his own expense

DEDICATION Construction completed in 11 B.C. but

not dedicated until 13 B.C. Marcellus was the son of Augustus’

sister Octavia. He was the heir to Augustus but died

young.

THE THEATER More than 98 ft. tall Seating area is 426 ft. in diameter Could accommodate 14,000 spectators,

12,000 of which could be seated Separated into three floors Today, highest floor is divided into

multiple apartments, and small summer concerts are held in surroundings
