Where did Kavala take its name

from?

Kavala has a characteristic and different name in

every historic period.

What do you mean?

The first name was Neapolis

and it was used in ancient times. What about the

other names?

The second name was Christoupolis. It

was used in Byzantine times.

The last name, the name we use until today, is Kavala and

it has been used from 16th century.

I ‘ll continue now.Yes, I am. Have you got

any questions about Kavala?

Are you a guide?

Good morning.

established a colony on the opposite

Thracean coastline.

When did the history of the town

begin?

I am Artemis, the Godness that the people of

Neapolis worshipped

Yes, after 300 years Neapolis took part in the Peloponisious’

Hello, I ‘m a guide. Do you

want to ask me any questions?

What a beautiful town! There are so many places to visit

and things to do here!

Ok. Let ‘s say some things about Kavala nowadays.

Yes, of course. What

would you like to know?

How many people live in Kavala now? Approximately

80.000.

Some run their own business, others fish, you know Kavala has

got a big port and others work in

factories.

Did you know that Philippi is named after Philip 2nd the

king of Macedonia?

Philippi

Philip 2nd was the king of Macedonia in ancient times. He had a son, Alexander the Great, who became the king of Macedonia after him. Alexander was also the biggest conqueror of the ancient times. Today you can visit the archaeological sights of the area and enjoy tragedies and comedies in the ancient theatre of Philippi.

What places of interest can I visit?

Don ‘t miss the castle, the old city of

Philippi with the theatre and of course you should enjoy the wonderful beaches.

I am Apostle Paul and I am here to tell you

about Kavala in Byzantine times.

Great! I know that you were the first Apostle who came to Greece.

When did you come to Kavala?

Very interesting!

In 54 a.C I came from East to the port of Neapolis

and then I went to Philippi where I taught the

Christianism.

Of course not. Christoupolis wasn‘t a town for 140 years and appeared again in the end of the 15th and 16th century as Kavala.

Really? And then?

In the middle of the 8th and 9th century a.C.

Byzantines changed the name of the town to

Christoupolis.

In 1391, Christoupolis was conquered by the Turkish

people and was completely destroyed.

And what about Kavala? The

history of the town ends here?

Local History

We had a great time here, in

Kavala, didn't we?

Of course we did! And we also learned lots of things about Kavala!

I hope we will come back next year!

And all these thanks to the

children and the teacher of the 24th Primary

School of Kavala!
