• The purpose of this grabber is to instill FEAR in the students to make a connection to the fear of communism during the Cold war

• Link these ideas to the Red Scare/McCarthy hearings and fear of government infiltration by communists.

Cold War• The Cold War was a struggle between the western democratic

nations (mainly the United States) and the communist nation of the Soviet Union (and later China) for the political supremacy of the world. Ideological War.

• Following World War II, the United States and the other Allies divided Germany into four occupation zones. Rivalries for influence over the German territories led to disagreements during the occupation of Germany by the French, British, Russians, and Americans.

• Thus beginning the Cold War. Over four decades, competition between the United States and the USSR involved many other countries aligned with one of the two superpowers

Marshall Plan• Europe lay in ruins after WWII. The traditional

European powers were physically, financially, and emotionally unable to reconstruct the continent.

• The Marshall Plan: 13 billion dollars given

to European countries by the U.S. to rebuild

economies.

• Why give all that $$ to Europe?

Containment Policy• Containment Policy: US foreign policy regarding

communism. The goal was to prevent the spread of communism and keep it contained where it already existed.

• Truman Doctrine: United States would provide political, military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from communism. • First used for Greece and Turkey.

Korean War

China had fallen to communism

The Korean Peninsula was divided at the 38th Parallel

US forces helped defend Democratic South Korea against invading Communist North Korean forces
