United States HolocaustMemorial MuseumExhibit: Through an American’sEyes: Germany’sAnnexation of Austria
Location: United States HolocaustMemorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg
Place SW, Washington, DC 20024
When Americans Ross and Helen Baker moved to Vienna, Austria, in 1937, they took their homemovie camera with them so they would always remember their family’s travels abroad. Just liketoday, lming family and friends was a popular hobby in the 1930s.
However, as dramatic political developments played out in the streets around them, they insteadbecame eyewitnesses to frightening and world-changing events. Their diary, letters, and lmsdepict the German annexation of Austria-known as the Anschluss-which happened 80 years agothis month.
Today, the Bakers’ images and artifacts are safeguarded at the Museum. Explore their collection, which documents these historic events through the eyes of ordinary Americans.
