Three dimensional modelling of hydrodynamics and dissolved oxygen
in Lake Erie using ELCOM-CAEDYM
Luis F. Leon, Bob Hecky, Ralph Smith, Stephanie Guildford, Kevin Lamb (U. Waterloo)Jose Romero, Jason Antenucci (U. West. Australia)
CAEDYM (Computational Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics Model)
• designed to be linked to hydrodynamic models...
– ELCOM as the 3D hydrodynamic model driving CAEDYM,– model includes comprehensive process representation of the C, N, P, Si and DO cycles,– several size classes of inorganic suspended solids, and phytoplankton dynamics,– operates on any sub-daily time step to resolve algal processes (diurnal photosynthesis and nocturnal respiration),– generally runs at the same time interval as the hydrodynamic model.
Developed, supported, and distributed by Centre for Water Research, University of Western Australia

Initial Testing: 1994• Including main tributaries and tracers setup...
– river tracers (flow weighted)– area tracers (i.e. basin exchanges)
TP Loads (concentrations)
Next step: Setup initial conditions & output sites…
With assistance and collaboration of Dave Schwab (GLERL) and Dave Dolan (UWGB).

Objectives...
• Learn how to use the coupled ELCOM-CAEDYM & preliminary setup-testing in Lake Erie...
– Program setup for version 2.2 and running executables.– Input file generation (loads and initial conditions, output definition, parameter configuration file, etc.).– Output transformation to netCD files (web and in-house scripts).– CWR Modeler as a quick output browser.– MatLab as the output visualization tool (plots, contours, time series, animations, etc.).
