TIMELINES
A few things to know:
Chronological -
B.C. –A.D. –B.C.E. – C.E. – c-
What is a century?
If people lived in the 1st century, during which years would they have lived?
If they lived in the 2nd century, during which years would they have lived?
During which century do we currently live in?Label one of these lines with A.) BCE/BC and the other B.) CE/AD
1CE 100 CE 200 CE 300 CE 400 CE
400 BCE 300 BCE 200 BCE 100 BCE 1 AD
1. We need to know that ___________________ has an order.2. History is organized ____________________3. Once you understand and know about events chronologically – We can begin to explain/
examine historical______________________________
Why should be learn about timelines?
Who is older, someone born in 1760 BCE or someone born in 1450 BCE?
How many years difference is there between 250 BCE and 264 BCE?
How many years difference is there between 1436 BCE and 1524 CE?
You visit a cemetery and one of the tombstones reads, “ Born in the 15th century, died in the 16th century.” Make up possible dates that this person may have been born and died.
Look at the following 10 dates: Put them in Chronological Order by reordering and rewriting the information in the blank boxes..
3,000 B.C. – First plow used in China
1,800 B.C. - Code of Hammurabi recorded
900 B.C. – Creek City-State of Sparta founded.
476 C.E. – Rome Falls to Germanic invaders.
2,772 B.C.E – Egyptians create 365 day calendar.
20,000 B.C. - Hunter-gatherers paint the walls of caves near Avignon, France
5,000 B.C.E - First Towns settle in Sumer.
45 B.C. – Julius Caesar becomes dictator of Rome.
101 A.D. Chinese invented paper.
776 B.C.E. – First Olympic Games held.
Today we are going to learn about Timelines.
Time lines help us to understand
History!!
1. If you are able to order events into chronological order.
2. If you are able to read a timeline – interpret their data.
3. If you are able to make a timeline.
A timeline is an actual picture of events that happened in history. The events depicted on a timeline are in chronological order. Timelines can be LINEAR or COMPARATIVE.
Chronologically
Arranged in the order in which events happened; according to date
Arranged in order of occurrence; so a story may be chronological, in which case it relates events in the sequence they occurred;
B.C.
A.D.
Before Christ
Anno Domino (in the year of our Lord)
BC and AD relate all dates to the birth of Jesus. Referring to Jesus Christ - using dates that are based
on the birth of Jesus - which are part of the Christian Religion. However, this was seen as
offensive to non-Christians, so, historians developed new terms to
date events.
BIRTH OF CHRIST
AD1 Alleged date of the birth of Jesus Christ. Calendar dates back from here (BC: Before
Christ) and forward from here. c. 4 B.C. birth of Jesus
c. 6 BC – Suggested birth (earliest)
The Gospels are problematic, because they offer two accounts that chronologists find incompatible. Matthew states that Jesus was born while Herod the Great was still alive and that Herod ordered the slaughter of infants two years old and younger (Matt. 2:16), and based on the date of Herod's death in 4 BC (contra Dionysius Exiguus), many chronologists conclude that the year 6 BC is the most likely year of Jesus' birth. Consequently, Jesus would have been about four to six years old in the year AD 1.
On the other hand, Luke's account places Jesus' birth during a census conducted under the governorship of Quirinius, who, according to Josephus, conducted a census in AD 6. In order to reconcile the two Gospel accounts, some have suggested that Josephus was mistaken or that Quirinius had a separate period of rule under Herod. In any case, the actual date of his birth remains historically unverifiable.
In recent years, East Asian historians have attempted to match the birth of Jesus with special events in their history. They found that, according to the oldest record of the Comet Halley during the Han Dynasty, "The comet heads east with its tail pointing west at night, and was appearing in the sky for more than 70 days". in 6 BC. This has been suggested as an independent record of the "Star" described in Matthew 2. If accepted, this suggestion would place the birthday of Jesus in summer rather than winter.
Brief timeline of Jesus. Important years from empirical sources.c. 6 BC – Suggested birth (Earliest)c. 4 BC – Herod's deathc. AD 6 – Suggested birth (Latest).
Quirinius censusc. AD 26 – Pilate appointed Judea
governor c. AD 27 – Suggested death (Earliest).c. AD 36 – Suggested death (Latest);
B.C.E. -BEFORE THE COMMON ERA
C.E. - COMMON ERA/CHRISTIAN ERA
Since many non-Christians have come to use this calendar, an alternative notation "C.E." is
sometimes used. It is presently uncertain what the original
meaning of this abbreviation was, although today it is taken to mean either the Common Era or
the Christian Era: many references cite both.
Often, the letter “C” will appear before the date on a time line. This “c” stands for
the word circa which means “around”. This
notation is used when the exact date is not known.
A century is one hundred of something, usually one hundred
consecutive years
If people lived in the 1st century, they lived between the
year 0 – 99.
If they lived in the 2nd century, they would have lived between
the years 100 -199.
0100
1st Century
1000 2001st Century 2nd Century
When an event is said to have happened in the 6th century (or even the 6th century BCE), the years in which the event could
have occurred are between 500 – 599 (or 500 – 599 BCE).
1 CE 500 – 599CE
599 – 500BCE
For example: Buddha was born in 563 BCE, which would mean
he was born in the 6th century BCE.
1 CE
Buddha Born563 BCE
4th 3rd 2nd 1st5th
What century are we part of today…. 2010?
Remember…… always go up…………………
When numbering in C.E. (or A.D.) – remember the number simply go
up (get larger) the farther you move to the right.
1 100 200 300 400 500 600 700
When numbering in B.C.E. (or B.C.) – remember the number
gets larger the farther you move to the left.
800 700 600 500 400 300 200 100 1CE
Knowing about TIMELINES, we can begin to look at/answer these questions:
Which King or Queen came before who? Which battle was when? Were the Greeks more ancient than the Egyptians?Could King Henry VIII have met Florence Nightingale?
1.We need to know that history has an order.2.History is organized chronologically.3.Once you understand and know about events
chronologically – We can begin to explain/ examine historical
relationships.
Timelines help us to
understand History!!
