TIPS FOR SUCCESS

This is at three levels: Community Baseline Follow up

Community/Screening

It all starts from community Rapid assessment of the community

perspectives Dispelling the fears depending on the

needs Overview of what is offered at site

and why

At Baseline extensive/comprehensive Family

Planning counseling skills counsel on all the available methods

even if participant comes when she is already on a method

- consideration weight ,previous/current medical history and experience on previously used methods to enable participant make the best choice

At Baseline Con’t Explain the participant the facts about

IUCD: -It has no hormones -You will be having your periods monthly. -You can conceive at any time you want

once the IUCD is removed.

At Baseline Con’t

We have support from (MoH), Mulago Referral Hospital and other NGO who provide us with the methods.

Sensitization from the media through radio and Television adverts,-bil boards(- Some participants come already aware of the methods as a result of the –”the smart choice”

Availability of supplies- enables the staff to provide the services on site and real time

The staff experience -The well trained and experienced staff

At Baseline Con’t

IUCD Satisfied participants act as their peers

Continued care/support is key .

At Follow up Ongoing sensitization/Extensive

counseling skills Some staff are Role Models using the

same MOH Adverts Unbiased Service provider

At Follow up Con’t Methods readily available on site with the

support from MOH through Mulago providers

S/E of other methods –Emphasis' on advantages of the IUCD over hormonal

On going training of service providers.

At Follow up Con’t Peer influence-participant share influence

in the lounge and describe or discuss the advantages of using the IUCD.

Through Adherence workshops-participants sharing experiences in using IUCD and those have not ever used IUCD have myths demythitified

At Follow up Con’t Support from experience-well trained staff Participants have not had complains from

other participants Those on Depo for along time are

switching to IUCD due to on going counseling

They come with knowledge i.e. adverts on radios and television so the country is also doing a lot of support
