THEY loved Fr. James Reuter, SJ,for his dedication as a great com-municator of the Gospel, hisbeautiful musical plays and in-spiring stage dramas, and mostly for genuinely loving the Philip-pines and serving its people.
Catholic Church members, especially those who had the
opportunity to work with thebeloved American Jesuit in his46 years of service with theCatholic Bishops’ Conferenceof the Philippines (CBCP),evoked good memories of himas they mourned his passing
yes terd ay.“An American by birth, a Fil-
ipino by heart, he was a com-municator par excellence,” saidMsgr. Pedro Quitorio, the CBCPmedia director.
“Aside from pioneering hisown brand of stage drama and
literature, he will be remem-bered for initiating the ruralmimeo press during martial lawand for facilitating the estab-lishment of radio stations inmany dioceses throughout thecountry,” added Quitorio.
Sorsogon Bishop ArturoBastes described him as a “very pious and exemplary” Jesuitpriest whom he always saw
wearing his Jesuit habit.“He was a great communica-tor of the Good News of Jesususing modern media and evenmusicals, plays and movies,”said Bastes.
As a young seminarian,Bastes was one of the many
who admired Reuter’s work, al- ways taking the time to watchthe college musicals that he di-rected, including “The Sound of Music,” “Show Boat” and“South Pacific,” among others.

Formidable film slate for 2013F
rom the most eagerly anticipat-ed reboot of the Superman fran-chise, to new offerings from
master directors Guillermo del Toro,Bryan Singer, Baz Luhrmann, AlfonsoCuaron, to the continuation of theblockbuster series The Hobbit and The
Hangover, the 2013 line-up of WarnerBros. Pictures lives up to the studio’sthrust: to entertain the world.
Check out Warner’sformidable slate of films for the comingnew year!
Man of Steel. A young boy learns thathe has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a youngman, he journeys todiscover where hecame from and whathe was sent here todo. But the hero inhim must emerge if
he is to save the world from annihila-tion and become thesymbol of hope for allmankind.
Pacific Rim. Whenlegions of monstrouscreatures, known asKaiju, started risingfrom the sea, a warbegan that wouldtake millions of livesand consume humani-
ty’s resources for years on end. To com-bat the giant Kaiju, aspecial type of
weapon was devised:massive robots, calledJaegers, which arecontrolled simultane-ously by two pilots
whose minds arelocked in a neuralbridge. But even theJaegers are provingnearly defenseless inthe face of the relent-less Kaiju. On the
verge of defeat, theforces defendingmankind have nochoice but to turn totwo unlikely heroes—a washed upformer pilot (CharlieHunnam) and anuntested trainee(Rinko Kikuchi)—whoare teamed to drive a
legendary but seem-
ingly obsolete Jaegerfrom the past. Togeth-er, they stand asmankind’s last hopeagainst the mountingapocalypse.
Jack the GiantSlayer tells the story of an ancient war thatis reignited when a
young farmhand un- wittingly opens agateway between our
world and a fearsomerace of giants. Un-
leashed on the Earthfor the first time incenturies, the giantsstrive to reclaim theland they once lost, forcing the youngman, Jack (NicholasHoult) into the battleof his life to stopthem.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The second in a trilo-
gy of films adaptingthe enduringly popu-lar masterpiece The
Hobbit, by J.R.R.Tolkien, The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug continues theadventure of the titlecharacter Bilbo Bag-gins (Martin Free-man) as he journeys
with the Wizard Gan-dalf (Ian McKellen)and 13 Dwarves, ledby Thorin Oaken-shield (Richard Ar-mitage) on an epicquest to reclaim thelost Dwarf Kingdomof Erebor.
300: Rise of an Em- pire. Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphicnovel Xerxes and toldin the breathtaking vi-sual style of theblockbuster 300, this
new chapter of the
epic saga takes theaction to a fresh bat-tlefield—on thesea—as Greek generalThemistokles (Sulli-
van Stapleton) at-tempts to unite all of Greece by leading thecharge that willchange the course of the war. 300: Rise of an Empire pits
Themistokles againstthe massive invadingPersian forces led by
mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo San-toro), and Artemesia(Eva Green), vengefulcommander of thePersian navy.
Gangster Squad.Los Angeles, 1949.Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mick-ey Cohen (Sean Penn)runs the show in this
town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from thedrugs, the guns, the
prostitutes and—if hehas his way—every
wire bet placed westof Chicago. And hedoes it all with theprotection of not only his own paid goons, but also the policeand the politicians
who are under hiscontrol. It’s enough tointimidate even the
bravest, street-hard-ened cop…except,perhaps, for the
small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led(Josh Brolin, RyanGosling), who cometogether to try to tearCohen’s world apart.
The Incredible BurtWonderstone. Super-star magicians BurtWonderstone (SteveCarell) and AntonMarvelton (Steve
Buscemi) have ruledthe Las Vegas strip for years, raking in mil-lions with illusions asbig as Burt’s growingego. But lately theduo’s greatest decep-tion is their public
friendship, while se-cretly they’ve grownto loathe each other.Facing cutthroat com-petition from guerillastreet magician SteveGray (Jim Carrey),
whose cult followingsurges with each out-rageous stunt, eventheir show looksstale. But there’s stilla chance Burt and
Anton can save theact-both onstage andoff-if Burt can getback in touch with
what made him lovemagic in the firstplace.
The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writerNick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leavesthe Midwest andcomes to New York
City in the spring of 1922, an era of loos-ening morals, glitter-ing jazz, bootlegkings, and sky-rocket-ing stocks. Chasinghis own AmericanDream, Nick landsnext door to a myste-rious, party-givingmillionaire, Jay Gats-by (Leonardo Di-Caprio), and across
