2 Design2.1 compliaNceExoTecFaçadePanelinstalledoverExoTecTopHatsasperthistechnicalspecificationhasbeentestedinanATA(nationalAssociationofTestingAuthorities)accreditedlaboratoryandcomplieswithB1,B2andE2requirementsofthenewZealandBuildingCode(nZBC).AlldesignsoutsidethescopeofthisspecificationmustsatisfytherelevantclausesofthenZBCandotherrelevantstandardsandcurrentregulations.
2.2 reSpoNSibilityThespecifier/designeroranypartyresponsiblefortheprojectisresponsibleforensuringthattheinformationanddetailsincludedinthisspecificationaresuitablefortheintendedapplication.
ThespecifiershallaccommodatetheappropriateprovisionsrequiredbythenZBC.Carefuldetailingofallpenetrationsthroughtheairbarrierandrainscreenisrequiredandtheymustbeappropriatelyflashedandweatherproofed.Theothermaterialsandcomponentsthatareusedtomanagemoisturemustbeinstalledaspertheirmanufacturer’sinstructionsandcomplywiththerequirementsofrelevantStandardsandthenZBC.
Thedesigner/specifiermustensurethatallthereferencedocumentsandstandardsreferredtoduringthedesignandconstructionprocessarecurrent.Thedesignermustidentifythemoisturerelatedrisksassociatedwiththeparticularbuildingdesign.Thedesignandconstructionmusteffectivelymanagetheexternalmoisture.

1 Application and scope1.1 applicatioNJamesHardieExoTec®FaçadePanelfixedasperthistechnicalspecificationprovidesadurable,expressedjointpanelappearanceforbuildingfaçadesandfascias.Thisfixingmethodoffersversatilitytoarchitectsandbuilderswhichisdemonstratedbythevarietyofdesignstylesthatcanbeachievedincludingcurvedwalls,vertical/horizontalpanellayoutorbrickpatternlayout.Awiderangeofdecorativefinishescanbeused,fromsite-appliedacrylictextures,tofactory-appliedpolyurethaneplaincolourscanalsobeused.Metallicfinishesprovidedbysomespecialistapplicators.

ThisspecificationcoverstheuseofExoTecFaçadePanelandExoTecTopHatsforcommercialfaçadeapplicationovertimberorsteelframe,masonryandconcretewalls.TheExoTecFaçadePanelandExoTecTopHatscanalsobeusedtoprovideanexpressedjointpanelappearanceinbuildingsoffits.

2.3 Site aNd FouNdatioNThesiteonwhichthebuildingissituatedmustcomplywithE1-‘SurfaceWater’clauseofnZBC.ThegradeofadjacentfinishedgroundmustslopeawayfromthebuildingtoavoidanypossibilityofwateraccumulationinaccordancewithnZBCrequirements.Thefoundationslaborfootingsofthestructuremustbebasedon‘GoodGround’asdefinedintheapproveddocumentofnZBCB1‘Structure’.Thefoundationmustbedesignedbyaqualifiedstructuralengineerinaccordancetorelevantcodes,regulationsandstandards.
2.4 clearaNceSExoTecFaçadePanelmustalwayshaveaminimumclearanceof100mmfrompavedgroundand175mmfromunpavedground.Ontheroofsanddecksa50mmminimumclearancemustbeprovidedandthismustalwaysbemaintained.ExoTecFaçadePanelmustoverhangby50mmminimumbelowthebottomplates.
Donotinstallexternalcladdingsuchthatitmayremainincontactwithstandingwater.
2.5 moiSture maNagemeNtTheExoTecFaçadePanelinstalledoverExoTecTopHatsactsasarainscreen.Toachieveaparticularlevelofweathertightness,thedesignermustdeterminetheappropriatemoisturemanagingdetailsfortheproject.Thedesignershouldconsiderthefollowingmatterswhenmakingthisdecision:
• itistheresponsibilityofthebuildersanddesignerstoidentifymoisturerelatedrisksassociatedwithanyparticularbuildingdesign.itistheresponsibilityofabuildertoensurethatappropriatelevelofmoisturemanagementisachievedbyproperuseofflashings,sealantsandvapourpermeablemembranesetc.Beforeinstallingpanels,allwallopenings,penetrations,intersections,connections,windowsills,headsandjambsmustincorporateappropriateflashingsformoisturemanagement.Materials,componentsandtheinstallationpracticesrequiredtomanagemoisturemust,ataminimum,complywiththerequirementsofnZBC,relevantstandardsandthemanufacturer’sspecifications.
• ExpressedjointsinExoTecFaçadePanelmustbeprovidedasdetailedinthisliterature,seeClauses6.2and6.3.Forwindpressuresabove4.0kPa,bothverticalandhorizontaljointsmustbefilledwithasuitablepaintableflexiblesealant.RefertoClause6.4forsuitablejointsealant.Refertothesealantmanufacturerforsealantdurabilityinformation.
• Forwallshigherthan10m,ahorizontaldrainagejointmustbeprovided.RefertoFigure24.
• Theinstallationofverminproofing/basemouldatthebaseofacavitymustnotrestrictventilationordrainageofthecavity.RefertoFigure4.

2.6 FramiNg aNd top Hat SectioNSExoTecTopHatsarefixedverticallyovertimber,steelgirtormasonrysubstrates.TheframingtosupporttheExoTecTopHatsectionsmustbeprovidedinaccordancewithspecificengineeringdesignrequirementsoftheprojectandmustbesuitabletofixExoTecTopHatsectionsoverit.ThespecificengineeringdesignmustbeinaccordancewithAS/nZS1170.Theflatnessofframingmustcomplywiththeexpectedaestheticrequirementsetfortheproject.StraighteningorpackingoutbetweenthesubstructureandExoTecTopHatsmustbelimitedto20mmmaximumandmustbedonebehindtheExoTecTopHatsections.ExoTecFaçadePanelsmustonlybefixedtoExoTecTopHatsandExoTecintermediateTopHatsandExoTecaccessoriesasshownindetails.RefertoFigure3.ExoTecTopHatandintermediateTopHatsectionsmustnotbeinstalledhorizontally.
ExoTecTopHatsarerequiredatpaneledgesandExoTecintermediateTopHatsinthemiddleofpanels.TheExoTecTopHatsfixedatpaneledgeshavetheflatsurfacesittingontheframingandtheExoTecintermediateTopHathastheflatsurfacefacingtowardstherearfaceofpanels.RefertoFigure5.
ThemaximumspansandnominalspacingforfixingExoTecTopHatsandExoTecintermediateTopHatsforwallandsoffitapplicationsareprovidedinTable1and2respectively.Forwallapplications,themaximumcantileverdistancetheExoTecTopHatcanspanuptois1/4ofthesinglespangiveninTable1.

3 Substructure and preparation
3.1 SubStructureTheExoTecTopHatandExoTecintermediateTopHatsectionsareinstalledverticallyoversteelgirtsornogs.Whenusingtimberframing,thenoggingsbetweenstudscanbeusedtosupportExoTecTopHatandExoTecintermediateTopHatsections.TheframingtowhichtheExoTecTopHatsectionsarefixedmustbestructurallyadequatetoresistthefaçadeloading.Thetimberframingusedmustbetreatedandhavethemoisturecontentwithinthe20%limitasspecifiedinnZS3602.
Aqualifiedpersonmustdesignthesubstructuretosuitthedesignwindpressuresandloadingtransferredfromthefaçadetothesubstructure.
3.2 rab boardRABBoardisinstalledoverthemainframingtoactasarigidairbarriertowithstandhighwindpressuresandtomanagemoistureinthecavity.RABBoardinstalledasarigidairbarrierhasbeentestedtowithstandwindpressuresspecifiedinTable1.
RABBoardmustbeusedwithExoTecFaçadePanelTopHatRainscreenwheretheprojectsareexposedtowindpressureshigherthan1.5kPa(ULS).TheRABBoardmustbefixedusing40x2.8mmHardieFlex™nailsat200mmc/ctotheentiretimberframing.

note:TheframingrequirementforfixingtheRABBoardmayrestricttheExoTecTopHatspangiveninTable1whenfixingExoTecTopHatsectionsintothesameframing.
3.3 buildiNg uNderlayBuildingunderlayissuitabletowithstandalimitedwindpressureandisgenerallyuseduptoawindpressureof1.5kPa(ULS).Abuildingunderlaymaynotperformasdesiredwhenexposedtohigherwindpressuresforprolongeddurations.Thereforewhendealingwithprojectsexposedtowindpressureshigherthan1.5kPa,aRABBoardmustbeused.
Whenconsideringtheuseofabuildingunderlayforaspecificdesignproject,checkwiththebuildingunderlaymanufacturertoconfirmitssuitabilityfortheproposedproject.ThebuildingunderlayisinstalledbetweentheExoTecTopHatsandthesupportingstructure.RefertoFigure5.Buildingunderlaymustbelappedwhenrequiredsoastodrainmoisturetowardstheexteriorofabuilding.
ThebuildingunderlaymustbeinstalledinaccordancewiththeAS/nZS4200.2‘PliableBuildingMembranesandUnderlays–installation’andthemanufacturer’sspecifications.
BuildingunderlaymustcomplywithTable23ofClauseE2ofnZBC.
3.4 FlaSHiNgAllwallopenings,penetrations,intersections,connections,windowsills,headsandjambsmustbeflashedpriortoExoTecTopHatandExoTecFaçadePanelinstallation.RefertoClause2.5formoisturemanagementrequirements.

ThebuildingunderlayorRABBoardmustbeappropriatelytapedaroundthepenetrationsandlapped/tapedtoflashings.Materialsmustbelappedinsuchawaythatwatertracksdowntotheexteriorofthebuilding.JamesHardiewillassumenoresponsibilityforwaterinfiltrationwithinthewallduetopoorinstallationofflashingsorbuildingunderlay.TheselectedflashingmaterialmustcomplywiththedurabilityrequirementsofnZBC.ForinformationrefertoTable20ofE2ofnZBC.
WhenusingRABBoardtheentiretimberframingaroundtheopeningmustbesealedwithaflashingtape.ThetapemustbelappedoverthefaceofRABBoard.TheflashingtapeslikeProtectotapebyProtectoWrap®orAlubandbyThermakraft®arerecommendedforusewithRABBoard.Refertotapemanufacturer’sliteratureforfurtherinformationregardingtheirinstallation.
4 ExoTec Top Hat and panel layout
4.1 geNeralTheExoTecFaçadePanellayoutmustbeconsideredinconjunctionwiththeExoTecTopHatspacingandsubstructureframingsetout.ExoTecTopHatspacingmustbesuitableforjointingthepanelsandthedesignwindpressures.RefertoFigure3.Whereconstructionjointsoccurinthestructure,thesemustbecarriedthroughExoTecTopHatsandpanels.RefertoFigure25.
4.2 paNel orieNtatioN aNd layoutExoTecFaçadePanelmustbeinstalledwithdistinctivewhitesidefacingtheexteriorofstructurewhereastheclearsealedsideisfacingtowardsthecavity.RefertoClause11.2forspecificrequirements.
Panelsaregenerallyinstalledwitha10mmnominalexpressedverticaljointbetweenadjacentpanels,i.e.for1190mmwidepanelsanda10mmwidejoint,thegriddimensionis1200mmc/c.RefertoFigure3.Verticaljointsupto20mmwidecanbeformedwithadditionalcarerequiredduringinstallationtoensurethepaneledgescovertherubberfixedonbothsidesofExoTecGasketSnapStrip.Averticaljointupto6mmminimumwidthcanalsobeformedwithcare.
Thehorizontalandverticalexpressedjointsbetweendifferentpanelsmayeitherbealignedoroffsettoformabricklayoutpattern.

5 Fixing

1.Countersunkscrewsfixed2mmbelowthepanelsurfaceandflushfinishedusingtwopartepoxyfillerandsandedsmooth.Thepanelsarefinishedusingasite-appliedacryliccoating.RefertoClause5.3.
2.Exposedheadscrews,e.g.pan,waferheadhexscrewalongwithExoTecFaçadewasher.Exposedheadfastenerscanalsobecolourcoatedtomatchthepre-paintedpanels.RefertoClause5.4
5.2 FaSteNer durabilityFastenersmusthavetheappropriatelevelofdurabilityrequiredfortheintendedproject.Thisisofparticularimportanceincoastalareas,subjecttosaltsprayandothercorrosiveenvironments.
Fastenersmustbefullycompatiblewithallothermaterialsthattheyaretobeincontactwithtoensurethedurabilityandintegrityoftheassembly.

February 2013JamesHardienewZealand(“JamesHardie”)warrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheExoTec®FaçadePanelandRAB®Board(the“Product”),willbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterialsand,subjecttocompliancewiththeconditionsbelow,willberesistanttocracking,rotting,fireanddamagefromtermiteattackstotheextentsetoutinJamesHardie’srelevantpublishedliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallation.JamesHardiewarrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheaccessoriessuppliedbyJamesHardiewillbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterials.
nothinginthisdocumentshallexcludeormodifyanylegalrightsacustomermayhaveundertheConsumerGuaranteesActorotherwisewhichcannotbeexcludedormodifiedatlaw.
coNditioNS oF warraNty: Thewarrantyisstrictlysubjecttothefollowingconditions:
a) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforbreachofwarrantyunlesstheclaimantprovidesproofofpurchaseandmakesawrittenclaimeitherwithin30daysafterthedefectwouldhavebecomereasonablyapparentor,ifthedefectwasreasonablyapparentpriortoinstallation,thentheclaimmustbemadepriortoinstallation.
b) Thiswarrantyisnottransferable.
c) TheProductmustbeinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantJamesHardieliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallationandmustbeinstalledinconjunctionwiththecomponentsorproductsspecifiedintheliterature.Further,allotherproducts,includingcoatingandjointingsystems,appliedtoorusedinconjunctionwiththeProductmustbeappliedorinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantmanufacturer’sinstructionsandgoodtradepractice.
d) TheprojectmustbedesignedandconstructedinstrictcompliancewithallrelevantprovisionsofthecurrentnewZealandBuildingCode(“nZBC”),regulationsandstandards.
e) Theclaimant’ssoleremedyforbreachofwarrantyis(atJamesHardie’soption)thatJamesHardiewilleithersupplyreplacementproduct,rectifytheaffectedproductorpayforthecostofthereplacementorrectificationoftheaffectedproduct.
f) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanylossesordamages(whetherdirectorindirect)includingpropertydamageorpersonalinjury,consequentialloss,economiclossorlossofprofits,arisingincontractornegligenceorhowsoeverarising.WithoutlimitingtheforegoingJamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanyclaims,damagesordefectsarisingfromorinanywayattributabletopoorworkmanship,poordesignordetailing,settlementorstructuralmovementand/ormovementofmaterialstowhichtheProductisattached,incorrectdesignofthestructure,actsofGodincludingbutnotlimitedtoearthquakes,cyclones,floodsorothersevereweatherconditionsorunusualclimaticconditions,efflorescenceorperformanceofpaint/coatingsappliedtotheProduct,normalwearandtear,growthofmould,mildew,fungi,bacteria,oranyorganismonanyProductsurfaceorProduct(whetherontheexposedorunexposedsurfaces).
g) Allwarranties,conditions,liabilitiesandobligationsotherthanthosespecifiedinthiswarrantyareexcludedtothefullestextentallowedbylaw.
h) ifmeetingaclaimunderthiswarrantyinvolvesre-coatingofProducts,theremaybeslightcolourdifferencesbetweentheoriginalandreplacementProductsduetotheeffectsofweatheringandvariationsinmaterialsovertime.
