CLD 20502 BASIC ENGINEERING WORKSHOP

Topic 2Basic Hand/ Workshop/ Measurement Tool and Their Uses

Marking out is, essentially; Drawing on metal so as to provide guide

lines for cutting out templates and blanks. For marking where sheet metal is to be

folded. Holes are to be drilled or punched in the

component. The line is usually scribed using a sharp

pointed metal tool which leaves a fine, permanent line.

Types of Datum

Surface Plate▪ Used in layout applications.▪ Provide an accurate reference plane from

which measurements for both layout and inspection may be made.

Scribing block/ surface gauge A scribing block or surface gauge is used for

marking outlines parallel to a datum surface or a datum edge.

The scribing point is set to mark a line at a given height above the base of the instrument. This line will be marked parallel to the surface along which the base of the instrument is moved. When a line parallel to a datum edge is required, the edge pins are lowered. These pins are then kept in contact with the datum edge as the scribing block is moved along the work.

Scribing block/ surface gauge

Scriber Use to produce fine

lines. It consists of a handle

with a sharp point.

Scriber The application of

scriber.

The divider, trammel and compass. Use to mark a circular shape. It has 2

points sharp edge.

Center punch Use to making indentation in the surface

of the metal.

Center punch The application of center punch

Vernier height gauge Use to measure

height or length of any object.

Vernier height gauge The application of

vernier height gauge.

Hand/ Workshop tool is use for cutting, shaping, assembly and fixing of the workpiece.

Bench Vise & Clamp To clamp a workpiece. Bench vise is attached and fixed to the

worktable.

Bench Vise & Clamp Clamp can be adjusted on the worktable. There are variety of size and shape (G

clamp, C clamp).

Ball peen hammer Use to chip and cut

work. Use to round over the

rivet ends. Use to form hardened

work. Has a different shape

of head.

Ball peen hammer The application of ball peen hammer.

Nail hammer Use to draw the nails. It has a claw to pull out nail

heads.

Mallet The mallet is quite similar to the

hammer. Made of wood or rubber. Use to prevent from leaving a mar on

the workpiece such as sheet metal.

Chisel Use to chipping metal when it is struck

by a hammer. Also use for grooving and shearing. Has a different shape of cutting edge.

Chisel The uses of chisel

Plier Use to grasp

workpiece, gripping, wire splicing, wire cutting.

Screwdrivers Use to install and remove screw. It is important to use a correct tip for a

different screw head.

Wrenches and Spanner Use to turn capscrew, bolts and nuts. Come with a variety of head size. It has a fix, ring or an adjustable head.

Hacksaw Use to cut workpiece. The coarser the pitch of the teeth, the

greater will be the rate of metal removal, the quicker the metal will be cut.

Hacksaw The properties of hacksaw is as shown.

Files Use to put finishing touch on a machined

workpiece, to remove burrs or sharp edge or as a final fitting operation.

Files A file is specified by its length, grade of

cut and shape.

Files Correct grip for different file

applications.

Files Types of

files and their applications.

Hand snip Used to cut sheet metal.

Tap & Dies Tap is use for cutting internal screw

thread.

Tap & Dies It is use together with tap wrenches

Tap & Dies Dies is used to cut external screw head.

Hand reamer Use to finish a hole to an exact

dimension with a smooth finish. The hole usually is drilled undersize and

then used reamer to get the exact dimension and accuracy.

Reamers are also used to remove burrs from the inside of pipe.

Hand reamer The hand

reamer is used together with the tap wrenches.

List the action that should be taken to ensure the effective storage and handling of the tool.
