Transformation of the manufacturing process in the

Indian jewellery industry

Current Situation•Jewellery making has been a vocation for centuries, skills passed on from generation to generation, with no formal and systematic training methods•On account of this as well as customers’ reluctance to pay reasonable making charges, jewellery making has remained a cottage industry•The result is appalling working conditions, outdated equipment and inefficient processes•Given all this, karigars tend to burn out early, with failing eyesight and back problems•It would be a wonder if the grand children (certainly the great grand children) of today’s karigars still find this industry attractive •In 2 generations, the talent may simply disappear•Mr Perfect is Titan’s programme to inject all forms of quality into jewellery making, to systematically change it into a manufacturing sector, but still using the craft talent that is the foundation of Indian jewellery•And ultimately make it as attractive as any other manufacturing sector for young people
