Transitional Shelter development
STATUS QUO
Basis Proto type B
• floor size / usable space per person• ventilation position• meeting requirements wind & snowload > bracing• constructing frame with L-profiles
Transitional Shelter development
FLOOR SPACE• tent for 5 persons• 3,5 m2 / person > 17,5 m2
Question:Is this the footprint of the complete tent including porches or only the inner tent floor space?
Transitional Shelter development
FLOOR SPACE
Size frame Prototype B 5,15 x 3,23m = 16,65 m2
• = 0,85 m2 short• If only inner tent: 14,4 m2 > 3,1m2 short
LWET is 14,85 m2 inner floor spaceShould a transitional shelter, intended to be used for longer period, not have more space per person?
Transitional Shelter development
FLOOR SPACE
Increasing footprint to 17,5 m2 using 200 cm L-profilesNew size: 3,54 (= + 31cm) x 5,06 (= - 9cm)Or:Floor space innertent = 17,5 m2 >New size: 3,54 (= + 31cm) x 5,45 (= + 30cm)
Results:• height of tent increases with 40cm to 310cm!• strength profiles need to be recalculated!

VENTILATION
Creating adequate ventilation is important in any tent, but maybe even more in the Transitional Shelter.
To keep the vents well supported and within the frame concept, the ideas from prototype A should be integrated in the final design.
Depending on what size we go forward, we can go for different solutions:

BRACINGBracing the frame construction with cables is essential to meet the requirements on wind speed and snow load.
Transitional Shelter development
BRACING
Needed on the middle portal too!
It will restrict head space but can be integrated in a separation wall between man and woman compartments
Transitional Shelter development
PROFILESThe L-shaped profiles need to be all the same in length and possibilities to connect to each other.
The profiles have holes drilled in to bold the parts together.
Transitional Shelter development
CONNECTIONSMaking the connection between the profiles in the different corners is worked out well in the prototype.

Corner connection

Transitional Shelter development
OVERLAPPING PROFILESThe overlapping sections need not just a hole, but also sleeves to make connection possible.• more expensive to make• weakens the profile

QUESTIONS
1. 17,5 m2 for 5 persons > footprint complete tent or only inner tent?
2. Height of 310 cm? Is this acceptable?• Added cost to meet wind and snow load
requirements• Unused space > nice in hot weather, unwanted in
cold weather3. Using different lengths of profiles acceptable?
