GATHERING SONG: “Here is Our King”
Here is our King
Here is our love
Here is our God who’s come
To bring us back to him
He is the one
He is Jesus
CONFESSION (all) Lord, we come before You in prayer today, asking for forgiveness.
We have not loved as we ought to love, we have not given as we ought to give, and we have
fallen short of the mark of truly being Your obedient sons and daughters.
FORGIVENESS L) God, our heavenly Creator, hears the prayers of all people and answers those prayers. Our
prayer for forgiveness is answered in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, who died for our
sin that we might have new life. The distance between God and ourselves has been brought to-
gether by love made perfect in the sacrifice of Jesus. Praise God for the gift of love to us.
PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and ever-living God, you are always more ready to
hear than we are to pray, and you gladly give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour
upon us your abundant mercy. Forgive us those things that weigh on our conscience, and
give us those good things that come only through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord. Amen

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 18:20-32
In today's reading, Abraham undertakes the role of a mediator be-
tween God and sinful humanity. Appealing to God's justice, Abraham
boldly asks for mercy for the city of Sodom, for the sake of the few
righteous people who are in it, including Abraham's nephew, Lot.
20Then the LORD said, "How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very
grave their sin! 21I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the
outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know."
22So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained
standing before the LORD. 23Then Abraham came near and said, "Will you indeed sweep away
the righteous with the wicked?" 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will you then
3
sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25Far be it from
you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the
wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" 26And the
LORD said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will forgive the whole place for
their sake." 27Abraham answered, "Let me take it upon myself to speak to the LORD, I who am
but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole
city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." 29Again he
spoke to him, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do
it." 30Then he said, "Oh do not let the LORD be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found
there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." 31He said, "Let me take it upon my-
self to speak to the LORD. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of
twenty I will not destroy it." 32Then he said, "Oh do not let the LORD be angry if I speak just
once more. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy
it."
PSALM Psalm 138
Your steadfast love endures forever; do not abandon the works of your hands. (Ps. 138:8)
1I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with my whole heart;
before the gods I will sing your praise. 2I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your name,
because of your steadfast love and faithfulness;
for you have glorified your name
and your word above all things.
3When I called, you answered me;
you increased my strength within me. 4All the rulers of the earth will praise you, O LORD,
when they have heard the words of your mouth.
5They will sing of the ways of the LORD,
that great is the glory of the LORD. 6The LORD is high, yet cares for the lowly,
perceiving the haughty from afar.
7Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe;
you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies;
your right hand shall save me. 8You will make good your purpose for me;
O LORD, your steadfast love endures forever;
do not abandon the works of your hands.

GOSPEL FOR THE DAY: Luke 11:1-13
In teaching his disciples this prayer, Jesus also reminds them to focus on God's coming reign,
God's mercy, and the strengthening of the community. Jesus encourages his disciples to child-
like trust and persistence in prayer.
1[Jesus] was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to
him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." 2He said to them, "When you pray,
say:
Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial." 5And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say
to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have
nothing to set before him.' 7And he answers from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has al-
ready been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' 8I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at
least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
9So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the
door will be opened for you. 10For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches
finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 11Is there anyone among you who,
if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? 12Or if the child asks for an egg,
will give a scorpion? 13If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
REFLECTION ON PRAYER “Just A Call Away” Pastor Jerome Evavold
SONG “I Meet You In My Prayer” John Ylvisaker
I know you hear my pray’r before I ever pray it.
I know you are aware before I ever say it.
I know you feel my pain,
though I do not explain my need for you to see me thru and help me live again.
But I meet you in my pray’r, though you’re with me ev’rywhere.
I need to say the words that invite your loving care.
I meet you in the night or when dawn awakens bright.
I say, “You are my God and you are my heart’s delight.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
I believe in a great God who created the world in power and love and whose character is
reflected in all of creation.
I believe in Jesus Christ. I trust him as a friend and brother, a Savior and Lord.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, God at work in and among us. I believe that God is present
and active in today’s world and that I can know some of the joy of heaven right
now.
OFFERING
In preparation for prayers of the people, we invite you to fill out a prayer card (white cards at
the center of every row). If you would like us to include someone in prayer or share aloud
prayers of thanksgiving or concern, write this on the card and place the card in the offering
plate.
OFFERING SONG “Pass It On”
It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing;
That's how it is with God's Love,
Once you've experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.
What a wonderous time is spring,
When all the trees are budding
The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming;
That's how it is with God's love,
Once you've experienced it.
You want to sing, it's fresh like spring,
You want to pass it on.
I wish for you my friend
This happiness that I've found;
You can depend on God
It matters not where you're bound,
I'll shout it from the mountain top - PRAISE GOD!
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.
I'll shout it from the mountain top - PRAISE GOD!
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.

OFFERTORY PRAYER

many gifts to us. May this offering - of gifts and lives - be used to make your word more
fully known and your love more fully experienced. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,

Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,

Forever and ever. Amen.

Talking and Listening
It’s no wonder the disciples came to Jesus for some special instruction in the area
of prayer. As followers of Jesus, we too sometimes wonder if we’re doing it right,
if we have all the tools of the trade like those others we see praying with such ap-
parent ease and confidence. Do we need to pray in a certain language? Do we need
to use special, holy words? Do we need to use a certain format or pattern?
Jesus teaches the disciples just the essentials. Recognize the holy and intimate God
to whom you pray and pray for God’s will to be made manifest on earth. Pray for
what you need, for forgiveness and power to forgive debts, and for rescue from
evil. Jesus provides a model with some structure while also allowing great freedom
for those who need it.
Today, we pray to God together throughout our worship service. We pray words of
confession and ask for forgiveness; we pray to give thanks for who God is; we pray
for the needs of the church, the world, and all creation; we pray the prayer Jesus
taught us. We pray knowing that our petitions and praise are not just a one-way
conversation.
Talking and listening with God can lead us to new places, despite our doubts or
lapses in confidence. What if we feel that we’re “just going through the motions”?
What if we have trouble setting aside time for prayer? Sometimes even going
through the motions of prayer can lead us to discover a faith we didn’t know was
there. And those of us who have little time to spend in quiet can seek to pray al-
ways, living in such a way that everything we do and say is a prayer.
Jesus promises that those who ask will receive, those who search will find, those
who knock will have the door opened for them. Listen, God is calling.

Prayer requests for :
Family and Friends of Megan Bailey
We offer prayers for all our military, law
enforcement officers and firemen who put
themselves at risk for our safety.
Thank you to the Joyce and Tom Goar for the beauti-
ful flower garden they have created at Trinity. They
do not want any credit, but we felt we have to thank
them for their hard work. I know the black and white
picture doesn’t give the total effect of the garden but
it is beautiful!
Trinity Lutheran Church
Your church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.
It will be friendly, if I am.
Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.
It will do great work, if I work.
It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver.
It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them.
It will be a church where people grow in faith and serve you, if I am open to such growth and service.
Therefore, with your help Lord, we shall dedicate ourselves to the task of being all the things you want your church to be. Amen.
This prayer is from Pastor Meredith Musaus, Holy
Cross Lutheran Church in Menomonee Falls, WI.
