Two Famous Lobster Dishes for percussion and piano duo(c. 6'30")2018Mark Frederick Thorvald Gurrola (b. 1993)thorvald.gurrola@gmail.com
Inspired by Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, this piece uses the recipes for Two Famous Lobster Dishes from the cookbook as a compositional device. I derrive pitch sets from ingredients and cor-rellate instrumental techniques with cooking techniques as I programmatically follow the recipe.
Two Famous Lobster Dishes
I. Homard Thermidor
II. Homard a l'Americaine
Mark FT Gurrola
Performance Notes
Materials Used by Pianist:
trap table (for pan, bowl, brushes, glass tumbler, and windchime)
wire brushes
glass tumbler
metal thimble
ebow
Piano Strings Used by Pianist Inside Piano
Marking the strings listed below will help in the execution of some of the inside piano techniques during
performance. The performer also may prefer to mark all the strings which are black keys.
F1, F#1, Bb1, Db2, Eb2, E2, F2, Db3, Eb3, E3, Ab3, Bb3, B3, Db
Notation Performance Note Measures
Notes within a
Dotted-Line Box
Silently depress the notes within the box. 1, 15-17, 20,
21, 25, 49, 50,
66, 92, 93
+ - notehead Mute middle of piano string with finger allowing no resonance. 1
+ Mute strings about one inch from end with fingertip. 1, 26, 69-70,
91, 107-113
sos. Be aware to hold the chords notated when the sostenuto pedal is
used.
1, 5, 15-18, 25,
59-50, 66, 90
gliss. over string (t.n.) Glissando over the strings to be played with thumbnail. 2, 26, 33, 48-50,
65, 86, 91-93
gliss. over string (f.t.) Glissando over the strings to be played with fingertip. 21, 66-68
gliss. over string (m.t.) Glissando over the strings to be played with metal thimble. 65-66
Tap strings w/ brush Tap strings in the notated register with wire brushes. 2-9
gliss. w/ brush Glissando over the strings to be played with wire brushes. 9-10, 34-32
Knock on cross beams
w/ knuckles
Knock on the cross beams of the piano with knuckles. 12, 21, 85
pizz. The string is plucked with the fingertip towards the center of the string. 12-14, 68
trem. w/ metal thimble
(m.t.)
Tremolo on string played with a metal thimble. 18-19, 31-33
trem. w/ brushes Tremolo on string played with wire brushes. 22-24, 87
▲ - notehead Place indicated object directly onto the indicated range of the strings inside
the piano.
27, 46, 71, 89
▼ - notehead Remove the indicated object from the piano. 93
o Harmonic, these ring more luminously if the hand comes off the node
immediately after the key is struck or after the string is plucked or scraped.
38-45,
104-106
Guiro effect Create a guiro-like sound by glissando with fingernail along the
edge of the piano keys.
45-47
Glass tumbler The tumbler is used to “bend” the pitch of the strings; therefore, the side of
the tumbler should be neither convex nor concave but rather perfectly
straight, so that pressure is exerted equally on all of the strings. The correct
degree of pressure to be exerted for the optimum effect can be determined
by experimentation.
53-59
Harmonic gliss. Glissando through harmonic series by running finger along nodes as
the key is striked multiple times.
60-62
Scrape over windings of
strings
Scrape four fingernails over metal winding of strings: a single, very rapid
stroke over about 4 inches of string (motion should be away from player).
65
trem. on string with f.t. Tremolo on string played with finger tip. 100-103
