DURRHEIM ESTATE: LONG OVERDUE
New safety forumGARY VAN DYK
A new forum is forming for safety intheir community.Moves are afoot to get the Durrheim
Estate Residents’ forum off the ground forresidents of Charlesville, Montevideo andMontana. At a recent meeting at the Astra Hall in
Montana the very real need for such a bodywas outlined and it was obvious from contri-butions by the participants that it is longoverdue.
Interim chairman of the body, TerrenceTimmet, outlined the aims of the organisa-tion to safeguard and promote the interestsof residents in the area relating to the envi-ronment of the area, but most importantlysafety and security.
CrimePeter Frans, who co-ordinates the neigh-
bourhood watch in the area, addressed themeeting about how crime was affecting thearea and the need for more people from thecommunity to become involved in crime
awareness in the area.He said that it was alarming that in the
past two years crime hadmore than doubledin the area.“At the end of 2011 we had figures of 422
reported incidents, mainly housebreaking, but at the end of last year this had jumpedup to 842,” he said.“Nowwe were also having incidents of hi-
jacking in the area and there was also an in-crease in shootings in the area that resultedin deaths as well.

“It is urgent that we become aware of whatis happening in our community when itcomes to safety and it could get worse if wedon’t stand together to fight it.”Frans also pointed out that peoplemust beaware of how some of these criminals oper-ate.“They are becoming very clever when tar-geting homes,” he said.“Watch out for cold-drink cans in front ofyour homes. They mark houses that theythink are easy targets with a green can, while those that are more secure have a redcan in front of them.“People must just be aware of strange ob-jects in their garden or in front of theirhomes.”Resident Eddie Michael responded fromthe floor that he had been living in the areafor more than 30 years and that there hadbeen many attempts to form such a forumbut hoped that this one would take off andbecome functional to make a lasting differ-ence in the area.“We have lots of problems with the polic-ing of this area,” he said.
“There is supposed to be sector policingbut they are never here. My hope is that theforum will work closely with SAPS to makethat difference because at the moment weare living in fear. Criminals have becomemore brazen, with a family being attackedand shot onChristmas day last year, a youngman lost his life for a cellphone and if wedon’t do something thenmore people are go-ing to die.”Many at the meeting had similar experi-ences and this prompted Timmett to stressthe need for the formation of this organisa-tion to act with a unified voice.“All your fears and concerns proves thatthere is a need to speak with one voice,” hesaid. “Some of us have, on our own, alreadybeen trying to complain about services inthe area, but with this body those com-plaints can be more consistent.“As ratepayers we are paying for thoseservices in our community and the relevantauthorities must be held responsible whenpolicing is not done properly...”Contact Timmet at 083 348 6834 or ttim-met@mweb.co.za.

Fire safety tips spread tomany backyard dwellersGARY VAN DYK
Fire safety is a priority for backyard dwell-ers in Bellville South.Last week the Fire and Life Safety sectionof the City of Cape Town’s Fire and RescueServices joined forces with the City’s Disas-ter Risk Management Centre and the 107Public Emergency Communication Centreto conduct a door-to-door awareness cam-paign, focusing on backyard dwellers in thearea.Local ward councillor Mercia Kleinsmithsaid that this was a very important exercisein the area because there hadbeen somedev-astating fires involving these structures inbackyards in recent months.“In many cases these serious incidentscould have been avoided if the residentswere more aware of safety procedures andhow to fireproof their dwellings,” she said.“With this exercise we concentrated onthe key areas of The Scheme, Greenlandsand Stilwaney, areas that by far have themost backyard structures that could be af-fected.“We distributed pamphlets and engagedwith the community about fire safety tipsover three days and reached about 3 000 resi-dents.”Desmond Johnson, from the city’s fire de-partment, who co-ordinated the operationfelt that it was very important for such cam-paigns in affected communities.“It is very important forus to do such exer-cises because with awareness you can saveso many lives,” he said.“What we stress is that people living in
these situations be aware of how they canimprove the safety of these dwellings.“We show them how important it is tohave a bucket of sand and water on handready to use if a small fire breaks out. Whenplanning these structures they should alsobe aware that it is not good to have only oneentrance which will trap you if a fire breaksout.“Many children are also burnt every yearand we stress that adults should take extracare to keep children safe.“They should also be made aware of whatto do when there is a fire, and we encourageparents to even have a safety drill from timeto time so that they stay safe.“Another important fact that we want toget across is that people must know whichnumbers to callwhen there is a fire: 107 froma landline, and theymust programme021 4807700 into their cellphones so that help canget to them quicker.”This campaign forms part of the city’s on-going commitment to creating a Safe andCaring City for all of its residents. The summer season in Cape Town is rec-ognised as a high fire risk period, whenmany people living in vulnerable communi-ties are affected by devastating fires – oftenresulting in a loss of their livelihoods, injuryor death.During the past threemonths, the city hasfocused its attention on high-risk informalsettlements, educating communities aboutfire safety awareness. The focus is now shift-ing to backyard dwellers, where the city hasnoted that incidents of fires are on the in-crease.

Major moves will be happening at ValhallaPrimary School in Elsies River this year. The familiar site of the school, which has
been there since 1980, inChelsea Street, willsoon be changing as a brand new buildingis built during this year.Principal Andrew Lochner, is very exci-
ted about these developments and feels thatit is going tomake ahuge impact on the edu-cation of the learners.“While the education of our learners has
always been a priority at this school, thenew building will provide that added moti-vation to their educational experience,” hesays.“These developments have been under
discussion for a number of years and thank-fully all those plans are now coming toge-
ther.“Its amazing if you consider that the exis-
ting buildings were originally erected astemporary structures.”Looking over the plans for the new buil-
ding he pointed out that the new plans in-cluded anumber of features thatwill impro-ve facilities for the teachers as well, but thefocus is still on their learners.“The new buildings will include halls,
and a new sportfield,” he said.“The layout of the classes has also been
taken into considerationwith each educati-onal phase having their own area and grou-ping. Another plus is the specialised roomsfor activities like computer classes, media, handywork and music.”Building will be starting shortly but
Lochner wants to ensure parents that therewill be no disruption for the learners.

Learners have their say on rapeGARY VAN DYK
Learners at Bergsig Primary School in Bon-teheuwel are making their voices heardagainst rape. With recent incidents of abuse and rape
against young people in the news, Grade 6and 7 life orientation teacher Joeleen Bru-inders raised the topic and found out that herlearnerswanted to be part of the fight againstrape, as well as violence against women andchildren.“We first had a class discussionwhere they
eagerly participated,” she says.“They voiced their concerns and could
identifywith the seriousness of howchildrenget violated.“Many of them could also identify that
these things happen in their own communi-ties and that somehowa lot of these incidentsleave scars that last a lifetime.“The learners felt that these emotional
scars take a long time to heal especially be-
cause it is on the inside where their feelingsare not exposed.“A lot of them were also concerned that
young children and seniors are being abusedand taken advantage of”.Bruinders also pointed out how they felt
about their own lives in that they should beable to be free to play and be carefree in theircommunities.“Too many of them live in constant fear
and worry about the criminality that sur-rounds them, and they should not have to beexposed to such treatment.“Another of their concerns was also how
children gets labelled and treated after beingraped.“They feel that sometimes victims get
shunned or mistreated which is not fair asit could happen to anyone without themwanting it to happen. They want this horri-ble things to stop as no one deserves to beabused in such a manner. Children shouldspeak out against this wrong.”

ANDRÉ BAKKES
South Africans face many challenges on adaily basis, so many tend to switch offwhen they hear about strategies aimed atsecuring the future for our children. Recy-cling is one of those issues. Why shouldwe recycle? Imagine 500 rug-
by fields of rubbish, some already piledabout 30 metres high and some increasingin height about 2,5 metres a day. That isroughly the pictures of the City of CapeTown’s landfills at present.Ward 1’s councillor, Sakkie Pretorius,
feels particularly passionate about recy-cling and urges everyone to get on board. He’s been recycling for years and he claimsit is “absolutely worth the effort”.The City of Cape Town is moving ever
closer to getting residents to recycle theirwaste.During the interview he often quoted out
of the biannual environmental newsletterof the city entitled Enviroworks. It sends out a stark warning, “Waste can
turn the planet on which our grandchil-dren will live into a toxic rubbish dump,”and then defineswaste and how to go aboutdisposing of it.According to him the Bellville, Durban-
ville andKraaifontein areas are a few stepsahead of Parow, Goodwood and surroundsregarding recycling. This is mainly due tothe fact that residents in the latter suburbshave to drive further to recycle (all thewayto themodernKraaifonteinWasteManage-ment Facility). This is the first integratedwastemanage-
ment facility in South Africa and is able tohandle up to a thousand tonnes of waste aday.Pretorius continues: “The idea is that
every homeowner will get a special bin inwhich theywill throwmaterials which canbe recycled. The law will, hopefully soon, force everyone to start recycling. We can-not keep burying our junk. The city’swasteis disposed of in landfill sites, but these arefilling up very fast.”According toEnviroworks it is estimated
that households generate approximately46 % of the waste in the city, industries27 % and the commercial sector 26 %.V For more information on recycling go to www.ca-petown.gov.za/enviroworks.

A centre where young, non-violent ex-of-fenders are equipped to be reintegrated intosociety, was “opened” at Vredelust NGKerk in Bellville last week. The concept for Forgiven Ministries, as
the centre is aptly named, was born in 2008and the first assessments were done atGoodwood Correctional Centre in Novem-ber 2012.Young, non-violent, former inmates are
taught skills of entrepreneurship or per-forming arts at the centre. Louise Mar-cham, pastor and founder, said correctionswas a societal responsibility.“Through the initiative of Forgiven Min-
istries’ reintegration centre, it will enableparolees to become lawabiding citizens andpositive role models in their respectivecommunities,” she said.Louise said the reality is that we are liv-
ing in a world with very few role models.“Rolemodels can eithermake or break us,”she said.Louise summarised the concept of prison
byquotingaphrase thatwas re-usedbycon-sulting criminologist Dr LizaGrobler: “It isknown that imprisonment per se does notrehabilitate people, nor does it facilitate theultimate goal of reintegration.“It contributes to the formation of a pris-
on sub-culture within an environment, where social relations are based on surviv-al, violence and hierarchy.“Society should not continue to incarcer-
ate people for (long) periods of time and
then expect them to have transformedthemselves by some miracle.”Louise spoke on recidivism, which is the
habitual relapse into crime. She said it was apparent that the imple-
mentation of the centre would be crucial inbreaking the vicious cycle of crime and re-cidivism in South Africa.”Malcolm Healy, who in 1992 was convict-
ed of car theft and fraud and has been re-leased from prison for 13 and a half years, shared his touching life story and spokeabout life in prison.“Life in prison is very slow. It can take
up to three weeks to go through the processof requesting permission to receive an ironfrom a family member or even two to threeweeks just to get to see a dentist.“The need for re-integration into society
is crucial,” he concluded.

Light at the end of thetunnel for ECD centreGARY VAN DYK
A light has been lit for visually im-paired pre-schoolers in the communi-ty.
Last week The Athlone School for theBlind in Bellville South was proud to an-nounce the opening of their ZisukhanyaEarly Childhood Development Centre forblind and visually impaired pre-schoolers.“Zisukhanya,means tobring light in isiX-
hosa,” said Patricia Scheepers, head of thepsychology department at the school.“By starting this centre we endeavour to
bring light into the minds of the affectedchild from a very early age.“Research has shown that there is a need
for early childhood intervention in educa-tion for children from birth through to sixyears and there is a significant differencein academic success when children are ex-posed to enriched and stimulating environ-ments.
Deprived
“Most of the mainstream ECD centres inour communities are not equipped ortrained to accept childrenwhoaredifferent,as a result the majority of our learners areleft out in their already deprived world.”The ECD Centre is the first of its kind in
the northern suburbs of Cape Town and hasbeen made possible as a result of fundingfrom the Steadman Trust.Currently the centre has an enrolment of
seven visually impaired 3 to 5-year-olds,some of whom have multiple disabilities.
SupportA multidisciplinary team headed by Dr
John Philander is on board to ensure thateach child receives the best possible educa-tional intervention geared towards his spe-cific needs.A parental support programme is also un-
der way to ensure that parents receive thenecessary psychological support and skillsrequired to understand and manage theirchild’s disability.Contact the school on 021 951 7816.
The young learners enjoy their new equipment with teacher, Joy February.

John Persents, from Belhar, will be board-ing a plane to London later this year, to takepart in the major marathon there. As part of an on-going commitment to cre-
ating meaningful change in the lives ofSouth Africans, leading financial servicesprovider, Virgin Money, will send Persentsand two other lucky runners to London toparticipate in the 2013 Virgin LondonMara-thon.This charitable initiative, undertaken in
conjunction withRunner’s Worldmagazine, will give these talented athletes, handpicked from underprivileged communities, the chance to demonstrate their skills ononeof the world’s biggest stages.Over and above being one of the most pop-
ular fixtures on the global marathon calen-dar, The Virgin London Marathon, whichtakes place on 21 April 2013, is also theworld’s largest charity event. Thousands ofparticipants from around the globe are en-couraged to run in support of a chosen chari-ty,with this forminganobligatory conditionof entry. It was this charitable spirit that inspired
Virgin Money’s decision to create life-changing opportunities for local runners.“The change that can come about as a re-
sult of an event like this is momentous, andwe really wanted to play our part in extend-ing this goodwill on a local level,” explainsHeidie Aitken, brand manager of VirginMoney.“Rather than running a lucky draw style
competition as we did in 2011, we decided toembrace the essence of the event this year, and offer opportunities to those who mightnever have been able to participate other-wise.”This will be the first major international
marathon for Khubulani Zondo, John Perse-nts and Meshack Ndhlovu, who were select-
ed from running clubs around the countrybased on the strength of their written moti-vations.John Persents, who hails from Belhar in
Cape Town, looks to use this opportunity toinspire fellow athletes in his own communi-ty.“Being part of the VirginMoney teamwill
helpme to showmy fellow runners that any-thing is achievablewithhardwork anddedi-cation,” says Persents, who coaches would-be runners in his community, including histwo sons.“The London Marathon is every runner’s
dream, and it’s important for those of us indisadvantaged communities to know thatdreams can come true.”

Slaggereed vir die groot uitdaging
Die Suid-Afrikaanse Baanfietsry-kam-pioenskapsbyeenkoms vind van 27tot 31 Maart in die Bellville-Velodro-
me plaas.

The 2013 Metropolitan Premier Cup takesplace from 27March to 1April, at Erica Parkin Belhar, with Ajax Cape Town once againthe favourites to march off with the crown. The competition has grown from humblebeginnings into a global event.AjaxCTare desperate to shed a reputationfor falling short when it matters most, ha-ving failed to justify their favourites tag in
the last four editions. The last time theywonit was in 2008 when they beat BloemfonteinCeltic 6-0 in the the final.Just what effect this pressure to win willhave on the the UrbanWarriors this year re-mains to be seen, but there must be a fearwithin their camp that could be stifling. This is a side that has in the past not per-formed well when under pressure and theadded attention at this tournament mightfeed more into their insecurities and self-
doubt. The team’s coach is anxious for his teamto get off to a flying start against BelharSpurs, with powerful Harmony Academy, and Atlantis Leeds to follow. In a way, despite their poor form in thelead up to the competition, Spurs probablypresent the greatest threat to theUrbanWar-riors due to their home advantage.Ajax Cape Town have the ability, but havenot looked convincing since their excellent
run in 2008. Certainly they have the squadtowin, and go into this tournament as favou-rites. Harmony Academy blow hot and coldthese days, while Leeds United are goingthrough a rebuilding phase. TransnetSchool of Excellence look good on paper buthave a tendency to self-destruct, and theybattle for results.Cape Town All Stars are dangerous butshould be nomatch if EngenSantos cankeepup their level high.
