The UCLan School of Medicine and Dentistry MB BS programme has been established to offer a UK MB BS qualification to 35 international students. It aims to prepare graduates to confidently and competently begin their working life as a doctor anywhere in the world.
Medicine at UCLan
• UCLanhasbeenproducingrespectedgraduatesinthefieldofhealthcare,dentistry,pharmacyand biomedical science for many years and has a reputation as a leading provider of health education.TheMBBSprogrammehasbeendeveloped in line with UK General Medical Councilapprovalprocesses.*
• State-of-the-artfacilities,including:fivehigh-specificationskillslaboratoriesequippedwithlife-size human simulators to help students developtheirclinicalskills;theHumanAnatomyResourceandLearningCentrewherestudentslearnabouttheworkingsofthehumanbody;andsimulated settings such as a doctor’s surgery and patient’shome.
• PlacementsundertakenattheRoyalBlackburnHospitalandBurnleyGeneralHospital.Thesehospitalshavefirst-classmedicalfacilities,almost a thousand inpatient beds between them, and one of the busiest Emergency departments in theNorthWestofEngland.
BACHELOR OF MEDICINE AND BACHELOR OF SURGERY (MB BS)
TheUCLanMBBSaimstopreparegraduateswhoareabletotakeontherolesandresponsibilitiesofamedicaldoctor.
TheUCLanMBBSisa5-year programme.
Four themes are central to the curriculum:1. Integratingmedicalscienceswithclinicalpractice2. Communicationskillsandhealthinformatics3. Public health (personal, community and population)4. Quality of care and professionalism
Years 1 & 2 Students will learn in small groups and receive a good grounding in the medical sciences so that they can begin to integratethisknowledgewiththeirlearningincommunicationandclinicalskills.Modulesinclude:publichealth,clinicalskills,medicineincontextandcommunicationskills.StudentswillmeetpatientsinYears1and2,initiallyinGPpracticesandinYear2inhospital.
Years 3 & 4 Studentsrotatethroughclinicalspecialties.StudentsarebasedmainlyattheRoyalBlackburnandBurnleyGeneralHospitalsandGPpracticesinEastLancashire,threedaysperweekandataUCLancampusfortheremainingdays,ineitherPrestonorBurnley.
Year 5 Studentsdeveloptheirearlyprofessionalpracticebyundertakingfoursix-weekapprenticeshipsin: urgent/emergencycare;acutemedicineandsurgery;community;andaspecialstudymodule.Studentsareencouraged toworkindependentlywithclosesupervisionfromdepartmentalmentorsandanassignedclinicalsupervisor.Finally,studentswillcompleteafourweekassistantshipshadowingafoundationdoctor.
GraduatesfromUKmedicalschoolsnormallyapplyforfoundationtrainingintheUK.Thenumberofplacesisplannedaroundthenumberofgraduates.Thereissignificantcompetitiontoachieveatrainingposition.IfgraduatesfromtheUCLanMBBSprogrammedecidetostayintheUKfortheirfoundationtraining,theywouldbeeligibletoenterthishighlycompetitiveprocess,whichcarriesnoguaranteeofsuccessfulplacement.SomeinternationalstudentswillseekGMCregistrationandplantoreturntotheirhomecountriestoundertaketheequivalentoffoundationtraining.ThesestudentsmustobtainprospectiveapprovalduringtheirundergraduatestudiesfromtheUCLanSchoolofMedicineandDentistrythattheproposedtrainingisequivalenttofoundationtrainingintheUK andisacceptabletotheGMC.

MEDICINEUndergraduate Foundation Programme (UFP)
Who is this programme designed for?
This programme is designed to prepare international students, who have completed senior secondary education and met the academic requirements listed, for entry to undergraduate studyforaBachelorofMedicineBachelorofSurgerydegreeatUCLan.
How long will I study for?
Thedurationoftheprogrammeisoneacademicyear.The year is divided into two terms of seven to eight teachingweeks,afinaltermofupto12weeks,onereadingweek,andanassessmentweek.Youwillundertake22hoursofclassroomorlab-basedstudyperweek.Youwillbesupportedtoundertakevolunteering placements in a health and social care settingwhileyoustudythisprogramme.
What will I study?
This programme includes four core modules, takenbyallstudentsthroughoutthecourse.Thesemodulesare:Biology,Chemistry,MathsandEnglish.YouwillhaveaPersonalTutortosupportyouthroughouttheprogramme.YourPersonalTutor will help you adjust to life and study in the UK, support you to become a successful medicine student, and prepare you for your University interview.
How will I be assessed?
YouwillbeassessedbyexamforMathsandEnglish, and by a combination of exam and practicalworkforBiologyandChemistry.
What degrees can I progress to?
All students enrolled for this programme are guaranteedaninterviewwiththeUCLanSchoolofMedicineandDentistry.Studentswhoaresuccessfulmayprogresstothefive-yearMBBSatUCLan.
EntrancetoMedicineintheUKisverycompetitive.For students who are not accepted, or decide that Medicine is not for them, other options are available.StudentswhosuccessfullycompletetheMedicine UFP are guaranteed progression to the BScMedicalSciences.IfstudentstakethisoptionandthenperformstronglyinYear1ofBScMedicalSciences, they will have the opportunity to apply to progresstoYear1ofMBBS.
