COURSE OBJECTIVES Major philosophies of education and their

relation to teaching practice, methods, curriculum, and educational administration;

To gain a basic understanding of major philosophies of education;

Expose and analyze underlying philosophical assumptions in educational practice;

Develop the ability to distinguish between goals, methods, and curricula in education;

Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills;

Develop the ability to think independently in analyzing current educational issues

COURSE OUTLINE

“Introduction to Education” course creates the

foundation for students to learn aboutAzerbaijan and World School History. Thiscourse provides the necessary foundation

forstudents to get the fundamentals of

Philosophyof Education, and to understand of the

mostfundamental problems of educational

theoryand practice.

COURSE OUTCOMES Know main theoretical underpinnings of interactive

teaching and learning methodologies. Understand the actuality of innovative pedagogy

based on ITL promoted and required by new National Curriculum of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Demonstrate understanding of student-centered pedagogy and ability to construct one’s own pedagogical style.

Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelatedness of a school to its community through the analysis of simulations.

Understand the politics of education in a pluralistic society through the analysis of simulations.

Develop a more realistic understanding of the problems faced by teachers in today’s classroom

GENERAL PROCEDURES Attendance Classroom Rules- You are expected to arrive for class on

time each day.- All assignments are due on the date

indicated.- Plagiarism will not be tolerated.- Please take advantage of the textbook.

ASSIGNMENTS

Seminars - every 4 weeks there will beseminar on the material covered last weeks.  Students will work in a group onchosen material and build diagrams. Everygroup will present their works. Total – 15points.

CONTINUED… Individual AssignmentsArticles: Each student is required to select 5articles on Educational topic and write a reactionpaper on it. Articles might come from InternationalPublications as well as local. 5 Reaction papersmust be submitted through the semester, startingwith the third class. Reaction paper should includeshort paragraph of summary of the article, youropinion, reaction, with original articles attachedto it. I will not accept several reaction papers atonce or close to the end of the semester -10

TEACHING AND LEARNING A Transactional Model of the

Teaching/Learning ProcessContext - All those factors outside of the classroom that might influence teaching and learning

Input - Those qualities or characteristics of teachers and students that they bring with them to the classroom experience

Classroom Processes - Teacher and student behaviors in the classroom as well as some other variables such as classroom climate and teacher/student relationships

Output - Measures of student learning taken apart from the normal instructional process.

WAYS OF TEACHING Traditional teaching methods:- Inductive method (instruction makes use

of student “noticing”)- Deductive method (teacher tells or shows

directly what he/she wants to teach)- Type study method- Project method- Laboratory method- Q&A or Socratic method- Lecture method
