UMD’s Exercise Physiology Laboratory

Objectives

• Overview of the equipment used in the exercise physiology laboratory.

• Briefly discuss how each piece is used.• See some of the equipment in action as it

is used in data collection for research.

Some of the equipment…• This a monark cycle ergometer. It can be used to test

fitness levels and as a mechanism for exercise prescription. Also pictured is a blood pressure cuff used to monitor blood pressure during exercise.

This is an oxygen analyzer. It is used to identify the percentages of both Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide in expired air. It can also measure

volume of expired oxygen.

Pictured here is one of 4 treadmills in the lab that are used for various research projects, exercise testing and prescription and for exercise

itself. Next to it is a EKG machine that can monitor and print a person’s EKG during exercise

This is a data collection computer along with cameras to record, process, and digitize data.

Now lets take a look at some of this equipment in action, collecting data.

First, we set up a reference frame so that when the picture is recorded the points of interest of the body can be marked

in the computer digitizing system.

Then we remove the reference frame and get our subject hooked up to the oxygen analyzer and heart rate monitor. He also has insoles in that

transmit his foot pressure during the data collection phase to another computer where it is recorded.

The test then begins and we are all at our stations to collect data at various points of each trials. This is where the foot

pressure sensor transmits to.

All the data can then later be processed and used in various class research projects or UROP’s. This concludes

our tour of the Exercise Physiology Lab at UMD!
