DESCRIPTION

The Australian land that I paint from my studio is vivid, menacing and compelling and ever shifting. I watch the changing weather and changing seasons from within the mountains of Kangaroo Valley, where I live. I like to take photographs of those moments, then using digital programs, I exaggerate the light, and contrast. It is like painting poetry, dark poetry. I want the darkness to make the light look brilliant, and luminous.

ANNE-FRANCE FULGENCE, 2013 The man of today is abusing nature like there is no tomorrow. We are destroying so much and not giving anything back. I am horrified to witness the speed of destruction. So much waste, from so much beauty. The ready to discard world we inhabit. I worry that we, humankind, have learnt nothing about preserving beauty or respecting the natural order. We have taken so much, destroyed even more. I believe in the force of the natural world.

The Australian land that I paint from my studio is vivid, menacing and compelling and ever shifting. I watch the changing weather and changing seasons from within the mountains of Kangaroo Valley, where I live. I like to take photographs of thosemoments, then using digital programs, I exaggerate the light, and contrast. It is like painting poetry, dark poetry. I want the darkness to make the light look brilliant, and luminous.

I do not sketch. I work rapidly in oil. But I am meticulous, and demanding.

On my first travel to Australia, I was reminded of the place I was born, Morocco. After my parents moved to France when I was very little, I had the luck to go back every summer holiday, camping in the deep South with my dad, a keen beac fisherman. He used to disappear with his fellow Moroccans for days, leaving me alone in that beautiful wild land. I loved walking for hours along huge cliffs, while I could hear the roar of the Atlantic Ocean below. I loved sitting for hours and contemplating the changing weather.

At that time I had no camera so I tried to imprint the view and feeling of the land into my memory.

The Australian land is very similar to Morocco, there is an amazing light, even brighter here, and this enormous sky. I feel the power of the land. Every day spent in the studio reminds me of what humanity is doing to our Earth. I find solace in solitude, within the enclosure of the studio, where I battle with paint, and celebrate any progress I make, in capturing an instant of beauty.
