ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG SITE COVERINGaet 367 // spring 2012 // design competition

The objective of this competition was to design a roof covering for the archeological ruins on a dig site. The intent was to create a structural system that would not interfere with the work site, while also increasing the public awareness towards architectural heritage. By utilizing the roof design from the ancient building that is now ruins, I was able to create an abstraction of historic architecture.

This mixed-use building that we were required to design was one that had to provide a unique commercial and residential combination to revitalize this part of Hartford. It was a building that needed to reflect the theatrical nature of the neghboring theater as well as the historic significance of the local church. It was to incorporate the needs of both unique buildings into one structure with spaces usable by both. I creat-ed a building that allowed more open and free space that also directly reflected the important vistas and circulation of the area.

The sustainable lab project in the U.S.V.I. was one that required an in-depth understanding of laboratory layouts as well as how to build on a demanding and intricate site. Utilizing sustainable design as well as creating a lab space with very specific rooms and functions was chal-lenging yet exciting. I developed a site plan that utilized the topogra-phy lines on the difficult terrain, while also unifying the three main sec-tions of the building with each other. The simplicity in material and form allows for small architectural details to pop, while also allowing the amazing vistas provided by the site to dominate a visitor’s view.
