Indications show there will be a record number of teams for the
fourth straight year (topping last year’s record number of 252 teams) so be sure to get signed up before registration closes. Last year, fourteen
football fields were used to squeeze in all the games, in thanks to all the great teams and people associated with them, that continue to come back year after year making this
event a continued success. Scroll below to see new information about who will be covering the
tournaments this year. You do NOT want to miss “Battle In
Rocky Top” 2010.
All football teams and cheer squads are welcome to the 2010 mega-events. In very short time,
these events have become the premier youth football classics in America, and the numbers of teams that attend each year prove this to be true. In 2009, 252 teams were proudly hosted at the “Kick-Off Classic” and “Battle In Rocky
Top”. Again in 2010, teams of every skill level will be in attendance, so regardless of how competitive your team is, (or if your team isn’t competitive) there are divisions for each. To find out more details about individual events, please contact Josh Jones at knoxfalconsfb@comcast.net. The events will be played at the beautiful John Tarleton Park (five fields), Schumpert Park (three fields), and various high
schools in the area.
Born 2 Compete is the ESPN for youth sports and will be on-hand to cover the events, interviewing players, coaches, and fans alike. Highlights and team write-ups will be posted, regularly, on their ever-busy website (www.Borntocompete.com) adding even more national exposure to the HUGE events. In the Moment Sports will be covering the events this year as well, filming games that will be streamed, live, online where followers who were left behind can watch the action, live, via the internet. Also for 2010, Football University will be scouting the tournaments looking for the nation’s best athletes (ages 11 & up). Last year, FBU selected four players from the event to participate in the Jr. All American Bowl in San Antonio, TX, and were the only tournament in the Nation that was scouted by FBU! They will be at both events this year so, players, bring your “A” game! It just may get you an “All American” selection.
Tournament staff and organizers have spent many hours planning and prepping to ensure that this year will be one of the best tournaments yet! There are countless details that go into making sure the participants’ trip is enjoyable and memorable, and the staff takes great care to cross each “T” and dot each “I.” Start making plans today to attend “Battle In Rocky Top!” See you there!
Regardless, how competitive your team is or if your team isn’t competitive Rocky Top
Classic has competitive divisions for you!

how easy is it to win? is it something you’re born with? Or can it be taught? in the new book “the mindset of a Champion,” renowned dropout expert and philanthropist, stephán “Coach Q” askew, teaches his readers that winning is fundamental. this self-motivating booklet (23 pp., $5.99) makes it easy for any young athlete, or student of life, to understand and apply simple principles to beat the everyday challenges they may face.
by comparing the five starting players of a basketball team to five characteristics, Coach Q’s teaching method displayed in “the mindset of a Champion” is simply brilliant. “Just like it takes five key players to form the starting team, it will take five key characteristics to make the most important team: Life’s starting Five.” this short read is equipped with an instructional workbook that will challenge the young reader to be confident in developing a purpose and plan for their lives even when the odds are against them.
Whether purchased for a faith-based or secular youth group, summer camp, school organization, or individual, “the mindset of a Champion” proves to be a winner! Coach Q is the Founder and CEO of the Q Foundation, inc., which is best known for mentoring, youth athletics, after-school and summer programs, as well as gEd and job placement assistance. WCoach Q’s resume boasts of many accolades including being a two-time recipient of the “national youth Coach of the year” award, and being named
one of Essence magazine’s “do right men” (2006), just to mention a couple. Currently, Coach Q is marketing other motivational products such as his first manuscript, “destined to succeed,” and his latest audio product, to my young men. additionally, Coach Q will continue hosting his national youth-focused radio show, ask Coach Q radio, and the soon-to-come television show, teens talk.

The name Daryl Gardener is a familiar one to NFL fans, as well it should be. Gardener’s football career as a Defensive Tackle began at Baylor University and took him on to play with the Miami Dolphins, the Washington Redskins, and the Denver
Broncos, before he retired. He made history with the Dolphins as the first ever, first round draft choice of Jimmy Johnson, and went on to later be named “Player of the Year” while with the Redskins. Besides his love of football, Daryl has always had a strong passion for kids and he volunteered at Big Brothers and Big Sisters and at the Juvenile Detention Center during his off time from the NFL. The Guardian Ad Litem, voices for Florida’s Abused and Neglected Children Foundation, Inc., recognized Daryl R. Gardener, in October 2000, and awarded him with the prestigious Phillip Hammersmith Award for his outstanding contributions to abused and neglected children. Daryl’s commitment was more than just spoken words when he said, “Every abused or neglected
child I come in contact with will be placed in a stable and nurturing home, affording the opportunity to meet his or her potential.” After leaving the NFL, Daryl moved back to Texas and volunteered his services at Texas Southern University as the acting Strength and Conditioning Coach. Not long after being back in Texas, he founded Gardener’s Kids Center, Inc. The Center is dedicated to providing a family environment of love, care, and support for youth currently in Residential Treatment Centers through the collaboration of services provided. The mission of Gardener’s Kids Center is, “To organize all sectors of society in an alliance to end the neglect and abuse of our youth. Gardener’s Kids Center, Inc. ensures, through a symbiotic approach, developing opportunities for unlimited potential and self-fulfillment.” “Gardener’s Kids Center, Inc. will help the children caught up in dependency proceedings. We will give them a future of hope and promise, and help to lift them out of a wave of despair, which can bring more abuse, delinquency, homelessness, drug addiction and/or domestic violence. Gardener’s Kids is committed to providing a safe, clean, Christian, home-like setting which will help to transition these youths from their hazardous past to a nurturing environment which fosters each child with a productive potential. Gardener’s Kids Center, Inc. will promote programs and activities which allow kids to grow

and transition to either return to a safe family living situation, or to college, then adulthood. Youths will attend local schools and participate in schools, groups, and community activities which promote greater life skills opportunities.” “It is our commitment that no child should live in conditions which do not provide a loving, nurturing, and protective environment. The staff at Gardener’s Kids Center, Inc., and its volunteers, have an interesting array of experience and, as a team, we look forward to you becoming a part of our family in addition to the meaningful contribution to the day-to-day operation of Gardener’s Kids Center. Your involvement includes a myriad of duties and responsibilities. We invite your financial contributions, motivation, knowledge, time, and commitment to join the Gardener’s Kids family. Please know that we have an “open door policy” and hope that you will find your time with us both challenging and rewarding.” Gardener’s Kids is a 501©3 not-for-profit organization with the Founder/Chief Executive Officer bringing sixteen year’s experience of working with youth and youth service organizations, to benefit all involved. As if he isn’t busy enough, Daryl recently spoke at Jenkins Elementary for a Pep Rally kicking off the start of TAKS Tests. He also judged the Ms. Montgomery County, the Ms. Houston, and the Miss Southeast Texas Pageants. Daryl has added yet another endeavor into his life which includes
bodybuilding and it didn’t take him long to notice that, in the industry of bodybuilding, the athletes not only have big muscles but even bigger hearts. Our hats are off to you, Daryl R. Gardener!•
