UNIT 1.1 PERSONAL NARRATIVE

Thursday, Aug. 22 and Friday, Aug. 23

FRIDAY, AUG. 23

Objective: I will understand the components of

a personal narrative essay by annotating a good

model. I will begin my personal narrative by

narrowing down a topic.

Standards: Writing Applications 2.1, Writing

Strategies 1.1

Journal Question: What is the story behind

your name? Who gave it to you and does it carry

any special meaning?

WHAT IS A PERSONAL NARRATIVE?

There are moments in our lives that changed us

somehow. Moving to a new house. Seeing your

brother go off to war. Listening to a record of your

favorite band for the first time. Think of that one

event that changed your life. You were a different

person before; you were a different person after.

2 PARTS OF A PERSONAL NARRATIVE

Part 1: Event description in specific details,

focusing on the senses. What happened? Who

was there? What did it sound like? Where did

it take place? Focus directly at the moment.

Write about the exact hour or minute of the

event so the reader can retrace your steps.

2 PARTS OF A PERSONAL NARRATIVE

Part 2: Explain how this event changed

you. How did this teach you to be a

different person? What have you learned,

even ‘til this day?

E S S E N T I A L LY …

How does this event make you

the person you are today?

“MY NAME” BY SANDRA CISNEROS

As we read aloud, annotate the story using the

symbols we learned last time we had class. (At

least 5 annotations)

Consider the following questions:• Is this a personal narrative? Why or why not?• What are some things that stick out to you

about it?• Can you relate to the story?
