United States Naval Academy Band Trumpet Audition - 15 July 2015 Deadline for materials – 6 July 2015 This audition is for a versatile trumpet player to perform in Jazz Combo, Second-Line Band, Ceremonial Band, Marching Band, and Brass Quintet. A strong jazz improvisational background is required. In addition, candidates must demonstrate solid classical fundamentals. The audition will consist of improvisation, prepared material, and sight-reading with ensembles of various sizes and styles. Most of the prepared materials are contained within the included packet. In addition to the included materials, candidates are expected to prepare a ballad of their choosing as well as the tune When the Saints Go Marching In, either of which can be found in a variety of jazz fake books. Please review the included materials carefully as some minor differences may exist between these and any personal versions of these materials you may already have. All music is for trumpet in Bb, but candidates may play excerpts on the instrument of their choice. To apply, please email a résumé and cover letter to MU1 Matt Harriman at harriman@usna.edu. Prepared Materials: 1. All the Things You Are

To be performed with jazz combo. 2. When the Saint's Go Marching In, in F prepared two ways:

Solo trumpet playing melody with stylistic embellishments, 2 choruses. As trumpet/soloist in New Orleans-style ensemble.

3. Jazz Ballad of the candidate's choosing. The candidate provides three concert-pitch copies of a lead sheet at audition

(with Quartet). To be performed with jazz combo.

4. Joy Spring

To be performed with jazz combo. 5. Last Train to Harlem 6. Mama Llama Samba 7. The Preacher 8. Bugle calls: Church Call, Taps, First Call, Attention, Carry On.9. Sousa, The Fairest of the Fair 10. Fillmore, The Man of the Hour 11. Sabre and Spurs

To be performed with brass quintet.
