Paige, a clinical artificial intelligence (AI) com-pany based in New York, has assembled a uniqueteam of experts in AI, computational pathologyand clinical practice to build next-generation com-putational technologies that could transform howdoctors diagnose and treat cancer.

Paige’s platform consists of a viewer modulecalled FullFocus, a storage module, and a portfolioof AI products that together provide an intuitiveand integrated system for pathologists to triage,organize, evaluate, share, and store their work.The company’s most advanced diagnostic toolsare Paige Prostate and Paige Breast, two softwareproducts CE-marked for the clinical detection ofprostate and breast cancer, respectively. Paigehas also developed research tools to quantify andgrade prostate, breast, and lymph node tumors,and backed by an extensive partnership network,the company is already working on future appli-cations in areas such as colon, skin, bladder, andlung cancer.

A FullFocus on optimizingdigital pathologyPathologists are key players in the clinical carecontinuum for cancer, their role being vital todiagnosis, prevention, treatment and monitoring.With a growing and ageing population, the needfor tools to help pathologists keep pace with theincreasing demand for their services has grownexponentially. However, traditional pathologyworkflows rely on the time-consuming review ofindividual pathology slides under the microscope,creating bottlenecks that can lead to less thanoptimal outcomes for patients.

To address these challenges, Paige set out tocreate a diagnostic software platform that wouldoptimize disease detection and characterization,improve capacity without compromising accuracy,keep the pathologist in control, and seamlesslyintegrate novel scanning technologies and evolv-ing workflows.

The company’s core technology rests on twopillars: a world-class team of engineers, productexperts and scientists and establishing a partner-ship with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer

Center (MSK) to secure access to more than 28million high-quality clinical pathology records totrain and refine the company’s tumor detectionalgorithms. This unique combination of capabili-ties, powered by the world’s most advanced deeplearning cluster for computational pathology witha capacity for processing peta (1015)bytes of imagedata, allows Paige to provide diagnostic tools thatnot only maximize the amount of informationextracted from digital slides, but also help revealnew diagnostic signals that could lead to improvedindividualized treatment courses for patients.

Paige Prostate, a first-in-class software solutionfor prostate cancer detection, has been grantedCE marks for the initial identification of cancerousareas and for determining primary and second-ary Gleason patterns and tumor size (Fig. 1). In arecent retrospective clinical study, Paige Prostateafforded increased sensitivity and specificitywhen comparing its diagnostic performance withpathologists using it versus those who did not. Thisimprovement was seen regardless of the level ofexpertise of the pathologists and of whether theanalysis was done remotely or on-site.

Paige Breast, a breast cancer detection software,has received a CE mark for the detection of suspi-cious features on breast tissue slides and to providecase level predictions about the presence of cancer,with additional functionality in development.

The Paige platform can be quickly deployed in anyclinical setting with a minimal upfront investmentand allowing for secure and effective collaborationbetween geographically distributed pathologists.

A flexible partnering modelWhether deployed for digital viewing, collabora-tion and storage, for disease detection, or as anovel biomarker detection system, Paige strivesto maximize the impact of its groundbreakingtechnology by offering a flexible partnering modelthat supports AI-based biomarker developmentprograms that accommodate the individual needsof biopharma, clinical or research partners.
