Using Web-Based Resources in Secondary Science

Richard Hammond

– The National Curriculum and Key Stage 3 strategy documents make specific references to how ICT can be used to support teaching and to motivate pupils’ learning.

– Planning for the use of ICT should always start from the science learning objectives for the lesson.

– You should consider whether using ICT will make the teaching and learning of these objectives easier, better or different.

– Science departments do not need to buy a lot of software, but they do need a range of applications that can be used as part of daily lessons.

– Many good applications can be accessed, free of charge, through the internet.

– Some can be bookmarked and used offline, and others can be downloaded and adapted by the teacher to meet specific learning objectives.

How to use ICTIt’s not necessary to use ICT for the entire lesson or all the time – it can be used for:

• whole-class activities (in the ICT suite)

• whole-class teaching (using an interactive whiteboard or

projector)

• demonstrations (practical/model)

• part of a circus, with one group using ICT, and others a more

‘traditional’ activity.

When to use ICTICT can be used in any of the following:– whole lessons

– parts of lessons

• starter

• main activity

• plenary

– practical work: class or demonstration

– homework

When to use ICT– summary

– When it relates directly to the science

objectives

– When it enhances the science lesson

– When it supports good teaching in science

– When improves pupils' learning in science

ICT in science at Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 strategy has identified the following uses of ICT in science:– Datalogging

– Simulations and modelling

– Databases, spreadsheets and graphical calculators

– Information resources

– Publishing and presentation software
