after 75 years, the vancouver art gallery is
undeniably one of canada’s leading cultural
organizations, yet holds all the promise of
much more: the vancouver art gallery has the
potential to become our country’s leading art
museum.
for the past three years, the board of trustees
has rigorously pursued a major facility expansion
that will allow us to achieve the gallery’s full
potential in exhibitions, programming and
service to the greater community. in building a
strong signature institution for vancouver, the
gallery will reflect the international excellence
british columbia’s artists have achieved. it will
also embody the energy the canadian west
exemplifies in all facets of our culture, providing
a centre for artistic exchange unique to our
place on the edge of the asia pacific.
as we approach the year ahead, we hope to
solidify these ambitious plans with an exciting
announcement that will capture the imagination
of our city, province and country.
the vancouver art gallery creates curiosity,
initiates thought and instills greater
understanding by presenting the work of
outstanding artists, using the inherent power
of art to engage, motivate and inspire. With a
strategic vision, the support of those we serve
within the community, the leadership of the
local, provincial and national government and
the corporate community, as well as a board of
trustees who are firmly committed to realizing
this goal over the next five years, i am most
confident we will succeed in our mission.
i would like to extend my sincere appreciation
to the city of vancouver, the province of
british columbia, the government of canada,
our patrons, members and staff, to each of
our trustees who continue to guide and direct
this organization with unswerving dedication,
with special thanks to kathleen bartels for her
tremendous leadership in bringing the gallery
to new heights of success. as we enter this
exciting new phase, all things are possible.

reaching far beyond its residents
and the six million guests who
visit the city annually, vancouver
is known around the globe as
a model for diverse culture,
progressive ideas and artistic
excellence. for seventy-five years, the vancouver
art gallery has proudly represented this
remarkable city’s thriving cultural heart.
our 75th anniversary year saw many significant
achievements. throughout 2006, we celebrated
our history with a series of outstanding
permanent collection exhibitions and special
programming, reaching new records in
attendance revenue and membership. our 75th
year also saw exceptional corporate support,
with nearly $650,000 contributed by leading
local, national and international corporations.
in addition to financial support, the growth of
the gallery’s collection is of vital importance.
thanks to the generosity of our patrons, more
than 200 artworks were acquired in 2006,
contributing to the collection growth that is so
crucial to the gallery’s future. at the same time,
we laid the foundation for continued expansion
at all levels with the creation of a dynamic new
three-year strategic plan.
our 2006 exhibitions represented a “homecoming”
in the gallery’s anniversary year, presenting
2 full months of british columbia art and
artists. our internationally touring brian Jungen
exhibition, which opened at new york’s new
museum of contemporary art in the fall of 2005
to critical acclaim from The New York Times and
Time Magazine, came home to vancouver in
January. Takao Tanabe was a breathtaking career
retrospective of one of british columbia’s most
distinguished artists. in the summer of 2006, we
presented an unprecedented exhibition:
Raven Travelling: Two Centuries of Haida Art.
With works from canadian and international
collections, Raven Travelling represented a
monumental achievement, resulting from a two-
year collaboration with haida leaders and artists.
ending the 75th anniversary exhibition year was,
appropriately, Emily Carr: New Perspecives on
a Canadian Icon, a major international touring
exhibition of carr’s life and work.
vancouver is still speaking of our anniversary
events, including the founder’s day celebration,
marking the largest single day for attendance in
recorded history. five thousand visitors enjoyed
the gallery as our guests for this landmark
community event. the 75th anniversary gala and
art auction, a stellar evening which took 400
guests back to the grandeur of another age,
owed much of its success to the overwhelming
support of the artistic community and their
generous contributions of artworks for the silent
and live auctions.
in our 75th year, the vancouver art gallery
reaffirmed its proud past. i strongly believe that
all this magnificent organization has achieved lays
the foundation for the exciting changes we will
see over the next five years, as we create an even
more exciting future through facility expansion.
i am deeply inspired by the incredible opportunities
that still lie ahead for the vancouver art gallery.
it is the vision, dedicated support and continued
partnership of our board of trustees, artists,
donors, members, volunteers, staff and all those
who believe in the promise of the gallery’s
future who will take us there.

a 75-year success story
In its 75th anniversary year, the Vancouver Art
Gallery had much to celebrate. Throughout 2006,
the Gallery marked a long history as one of the
most important artistic and cultural cornerstones
in the city, province and country.
In conjunction with a year-long series of
permanent collection exhibitions titled 75 Years
of Collecting, the Gallery produced a dynamic
web-based anniversary publication. Visitors to
the website found in-depth information and
interpretation on 75 works selected from the four
collection-based exhibitions, artist’s biographies,
bibliographical excerpts, exhibition histories
and a wide range of collection documents,
including original correspondence, receipts and
conservation records.
On Saturday, October 7, the Vancouver Art Gallery
invited the public to share in the Founders Day
Celebration, a community-wide event officially
commemorating the Gallery’s anniversary.
Admission was ten cents, harkening back to 1930s
era prices. The landmark event, supported by 75th
Anniversary Celebration Partner RBC Financial
Group, attracted more than 5,000 visitors, the
largest single-day attendance in recorded history.
Founders Day also represented the first public
opportunity to view Emily Carr: New Perspectives
on a Canadian Icon.
Founders Day officially began with the
presentation of Canada’s National Anthem, sung
by Vancouver’s own Chor Leoni men’s choir.
Kathleen Bartels, director of the Vancouver Art
Gallery, joined His Worship Sam Sullivan, Mayor
of Vancouver, Graham MacLachlan, BC regional
president for RBC Financial Group, and Mary-Lynne
Jordan, the great-granddaughter of Gallery
founder Henry A. Stone, for opening ceremonies
on Robson Square. Following the ceremonies,
visitors were invited to join in the celebration
with a massive anniversary cake bearing 75
candles. Programming for Founders Day included
special featured performances by Chor Leoni in
the Gallery’s historic rotunda. Aeriosa generated
excitement on the historic building’s exterior
with breathtaking midair performances using
rope rigging systems and graceful leaps of faith.
Visitors also participated in a larger-than-life Emily
Carr collaborative mosaic on Robson Square and
contributed to a commemorative anniversary time
capsule, placing their favourite Gallery memories
in a trunk for storage in the vault beneath the
building.
On Saturday, October 21, the Vancouver Art
Gallery formally celebrated its 75th year as one
of Canada’s premier visual arts institutions at a
spectacular event: the 75th Anniversary Gala and
Art Auction, presented by Mercedes-Benz Canada.
More than 400 prominent donors, philanthropists,
corporate supporters and luminaries of Canada’s
arts and cultural community were in attendance.
For the first time in more than a decade, the
Vancouver Art Gallery’s historic Georgia Street
entrance, with its grand marble staircase, was
opened to receive Gala guests for a champagne
reception and live auction of artworks. Many
of Canada’s finest artists and galleries across
Canada and the United States contributed
artworks in honour of the historic occasion.
Following the reception and live auction, guests
adjourned to the Four Seasons Hotel for a black
tie dinner, silent auction and special performance
by Vancouver’s own Dal Richards Orchestra,
performing songs from the Gallery’s founding
era. Seventy-five years in the making, it was an
evening those in attendance will long remember.

This exhibition, which coincided with Raven Travelling: Two Centuries
of Haida Art, examined both the self-representation of First Nations
cultures and their depiction by non-Aboriginal artists. Focusing
primarily on the west coast, the exhibition spanned the period from first
contact to the present day. The works reveal two dominant themes—
land claims and self-governance—in the work of a variety of historical
and contemporary art in the collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
This exhibition considered the realities of culture, history and
contemporary life by highlighting the proud history of cultural
continuity and potent iconography of First Nations culture, and its
influence on both Aboriginal and European creative production.

the road to utopiaNovember 4, 2006 – January 1, 2007
Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery
Curated by Grant Arnold, Audain Curator of British Columbia Art,
Vancouver Art Gallery
In Europe and North America, twentieth-century modernism was
often driven by idealist dreams of an egalitarian future. These utopian
impulses found especially fertile ground on the Canadian west coast,
an environment distinguished by interaction (often unequal) between
European, Asian and First Peoples cultures, as well as close proximity
between nature and a rapidly developing urban environment. Through
key works from the Gallery’s collection, this exhibition explored
the territory between those utopian yearnings and the skepticism
engendered by the tensions, displacements and disappointments that
emerged in modernism’s wake.

installation view of 75 Years of Collecting: Portrait of a Citizen
temporary exhibitions 5
This exhibition offered, in a variety of themes, a short history of the
portrait of the citizen as presented by artists of the past two centuries.
The relationship between the citizen, the state and culture at large,
both in support and dissent, are a constant and engaging subject of
art. This is a story that is told over time and through diverse media,
each offering a new perspective on our condition. Portrait of a Citizen
presented an opportunity to consider the central role that art plays
in representing the ubiquitous, but fundamental, role of the citizen in
society.

the gallery’s 75th anniversary year was marked by dynamic exhibitions that solidified
important community relationships, won critical acclaim and attracted record
attendance. the year began with a double celebration of british columbia art with
survey exhibitions of takao tanabe, who boasts a half-century career as a painter and of
the internationally recognized artist brian Jungen.
the spring and summer exhibitions continued to highlight british columbian culture
in all its diversity. almost three hundred haida treasures from international museums
were brought together for the first time in Raven Travelling: Two Centuries of Haida
Art, an exhibition that marked an unprecedented collaboration. another first was the
retrospective of the illustrious career of local architect arthur erickson, who turned a
courthouse into the vancouver art gallery in 983. the gallery’s increasing interest in
architecture and design was also evident with the exhibition Some Assembly Required:
Contemporary Prefabricated Houses.
in the fall, painting was intensely explored with two exhibitions. Emily Carr: New
Perspectives on a Canadian Icon, co-produced with the national gallery of canada,
provided a fresh and rigorous view of british columbia’s earliest modern master. PAINT,
guest-curated by local artist neil campbell, focused on a new generation of british
columbia talent in the context of a dynamic presentation of bc painting since the 960s.
the season ended with Kyohei Sakaguchi: Zero Yen House, the first exhibition for this
visionary young Japanese architect who has studied innovative structures improvised
out of necessity in the bustling streets of tokyo. With this project, the gallery
continued its unique tradition of commissioning artists from the pacific rim in the
NEXT series of exhibitions.

The first retrospective of Takao Tanabe’s work from the 1950s to
the present brought together some fifty canvases and fifteen works
on paper, tracing the career of one of Canada’s most distinguished
painters, teachers and art activists. Despite receiving multiple honours
including the Order of Canada, Order of British Columbia, two honorary
doctorates and the Governor General’s Award in the Visual Arts, this
presentation marked the first major survey exhibition of Tanabe’s art.
This travelling exhibition began with early subtle abstractions and
moved to the artist’s hard-edged works of the late sixties and prairie
landscapes of the seventies. In 1980, Tanabe turned his attention
to the coastal BC landscape, and the body of work he produced is
among the most compelling depictions of this region. The exhibition
is accompanied by a major publication, co-published with Douglas &
McIntyre, with a biographical essay by Ian Thom and essays by Nancy
Tousley, Roald Nasgaard and Jeffrey Spalding.

Vancouver Art Gallery
Since winning the inaugural Sobey Art Award in 2002, Brian Jungen
has gained an international reputation as one of Canada’s most
prominent young artists. The Vancouver Art Gallery’s critically
acclaimed exhibition constitutes the first major survey of Jungen’s
innovative practice, presenting a range of work from early to recent
sculptures and installations. This exhibition also presented the
first opportunity to view the entire series of Prototypes for a New
Understanding (1999–2005), a series of disassembled Nike Air Jordan
training shoes reconfigured into startling simulations of Northwest
Coast Native masks, as well as the first showing of all three of Jungen’s
“shapeshifter” sculptures—enormous, suspended whale-like skeletons
constructed from generic plastic patio chairs. Brian Jungen’s complex
works present a unique synthesis of meticulous craft and conceptual
strategies, forging connections between western art history, First
Nations culture and the global economy.

installation views of Arthur Erickson: Critical Works
This exhibition thematically surveyed the work of Vancouver-based
architect Arthur Erickson, widely recognized as the pre-eminent
Canadian architect of the latter half of the twentieth century. The
exhibition focused on twelve projects undertaken by Erickson between
1963 and 2002: Simon Fraser University, Burnaby; MacMillan Bloedel
Building, Vancouver; University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge; Museum
of Anthropology, Vancouver; Helmut Eppich House, West Vancouver;
Robson Square, Vancouver; Pacific Northwest House, Bainbridge Island,
Washington; Napp Laboratories, Cambridge, England; Puget Sound
House, Puget Sound, Washington; Canadian Chancery, Washington,
DC; Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington; and Waterfall Building,
Vancouver. Through these projects, the exhibition examined Erickson’s
use of concrete as a primary material together with the conceptions
of landscape, public space and social value that have provided the
framework for Erickson’s distinctive practice.

As part of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s year-long 75th anniversary
celebration, the Vancouver Art Gallery presented an exhibition that
featured the finest examples of Haida art created in the last two centuries.
Drawn from extensive public and private collections throughout North
America and Europe, the exhibition presented the development and
aesthetic achievements of Haida art from the nineteenth century to
the present. Featuring nearly 300 artworks ranging from monumental
poles and exquisitely carved masks to argillite carvings and remarkable
spruce root weavings, as well as new directions in contemporary art, the
exhibition captured the vitality of a unique and significant culture.

Continuing the Vancouver Art Gallery’s NEXT series, which presents
artists’ projects from the Pacific Rim, this exhibition featured the work
of Kyohei Sakaguchi, a Tokyo-based artist whose practice examines the
significance of non-traditional and informal architecture. Although trained
as an architect, Sakaguchi focuses on photography, installation-based
work and artists’ books. Utilizing Sakaguchi’s interest in housing built by
homeless and dispossessed individuals in Tokyo for little or no money, the
exhibition documented an elaborate sub-culture of architecture that includes
temporary and semi-permanent houses built from scavenged materials and
sited in public spaces.

Recent years have been marked by a vigorous, renewed interest in
painting practices both in Vancouver and elsewhere. Following this
development, the Vancouver Art Gallery invited Neil Campbell, a
leading Vancouver-based artist, to curate an exhibition investigating
local practices and their precedents. The exhibition focused on
an upcoming generation of painters in British Columbia whose
enthusiastic practices bring renewed attention to painting. To lend
context to this new energy, Campbell chose to highlight the work
of Jessica Stockholder and Peter Schuyff—two Vancouverites who
ventured outside of Canada to establish outstanding careers on
the international stage beginning in the 1980s. Selections from the
Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection represent the defining
achievements of BC painters in the intervening decades from the mid-
1960s to the 1990s.

Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and

Curated by Charles C. Hill, curator of Canadian Art, National Gallery
of Canada; Ian Thom, senior curator, historical, Vancouver Art Gallery
and Johanne Lamoureux, professor, Université de Montréal
The first national touring exhibition of Carr’s work in more than thirty
years, Emily Carr: New Perspectives on a Canadian Icon looked at the
artist through the lens of her career. Beginning with the 1927 exhibition
West Coast Art Native and Modern, which introduced Emily Carr to the
larger Canadian art establishment, the exhibition opened with a partial
re-creation of this landmark show. The second section of the exhibition
presented Carr’s work within the modernist paradigm, including a
discussion of Carr’s relationship to modernism and primitivism. The third
section presented Carr from a post-modern viewpoint, introducing the
many other voices that have been brought to bear on Carr and her work
and examining Carr’s self-construction through her self-portraits and
writings. Collectively, these new interpretations provided a provocative
look and re-examination of an iconic Canadian artist.

2006 collection in revieW
In 2006, 220 artworks were acquired through purchase and donation, bringing the
Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection to a total of 9,110 works. The Gallery was
particularly fortunate to receive funds from the Audain Foundation toward the
purchase of Brian Jungen’s Furniture Sculpture, a major installation created specifically
for his exhibition at the Gallery. Other highlights of contemporary acquisitions include
Mark Lewis’ Algonquin Park, September and Off Leash, High Park. In addition, the
Gallery was successful in obtaining a matching Canada Council Acquisitions Assistance
Grant that allowed for the purchase of recent works by Vancouver artists Karin Bubaš,
Jayce Salloum and Steven Shearer. Donations of important works by influential local
artists Robert Davidson and Ian Wallace were also received.
The organization’s historical holdings benefited through the addition of significant
works by B.C. Binning, Paterson Ewen, Sam Francis, Cornelius Krieghoff, Walter Phillips
and Florence Wyle. The Gallery was extremely fortunate to receive funds from the Rix
Family Foundation toward the purchase of Frederick Horsman Varley’s painting,
Cheakamus Canyon.
The institution’s impressive collection of photography continued to grow dramatically
with the addition of historical works by George Bankart, Samuel Bourne, John Burke,
Peter Henry Emerson, Robert Frank and Baron Adolph de Meyer. These works were
complemented by the acquisition of contemporary photographs by internationally
acclaimed artists Edward Burtynsky, Stan Douglas, Axel Hütte, Geoffrey James, Cindy
Sherman and Larry Towell as well as portfolios of photographs by Lois Conner, Larry
Fink and Stephen Shore.
The collection continues to benefit from the overwhelming generosity of collectors.
Claudia Beck and Andrew Gruft, Aaron Milrad, Sandra Simpson, and Alison and Alan
Schwartz made exceptional donations of work. The Gallery also extends appreciation to
Laing and Kathleen Brown, Bill Jeffries, Ann and Harry Malcolmson, and Ann and
Marshall Webb for their continued support, as well as to artists Ann Kipling, Gary
Pearson, Jayce Salloum, Larry Towell and Lawrence Weiner, all of whom made
significant gifts of their artwork in 2006.

public programs
In 2006, the Gallery’s Public Programs department
focused on presenting diversity in programming that
revealed and activated connections between art and
life on many levels.
Artists Brian Jungen and Robert Davidson, architect
Arthur Erickson and many other distinguished
presenters spoke about their work to large and
appreciative audiences. The venerable British
Columbia painter Takao Tanabe spoke in conjunction
with the exhibition Takao Tanabe and curator
Neil Campbell, world-renowned artist Jessica
Stockholder and young contemporary Vancouver
painters acknowledged British Columbia’s painting
legacy while pointing to the future in an artists’
discussion on the exhibition PAINT. The International
Lecture Series expanded this dialogue with a
public talk by prominent contemporary painter
Luc Tuymans.
Interdisciplinary programs associated with the
exhibition Raven Travelling: Two Centuries of Haida
Art were particularly rich, ranging from a Haida
storytelling area to interactive software exploring
formline design. The knowledge of Haida animateur
Kwiahwaah Jones enriched the Gallery’s program,
along with talks, demonstrations and performances
by the Haida Gwaii Dancers and others. A multiplicity
of voices also framed the exhibition Emily Carr: New
Perspectives on a Canadian Icon, ranging from talks
by exhibition curators Johanne Lamoureux and
Ian Thom to Gerta Moray, a respected scholar who
spoke to Carr’s relationships with First Nations peoples.
FUSE, the monthly interdisciplinary performance
event, continued to make the Gallery one of the
hottest spots in Vancouver for young adults with
challenging and breathtaking performances. The
evening event continues to attract and engage a
new Gallery audience.
supersunday celebrated its 11th birthday with record
event attendance. Each month, families sketched,
painted, collaged, sculpted and danced their way
through all four floors of the Gallery. supersunday
is now established as a “best practice” in museum
education and is a focus of study by early childhood
educators.
School programs continued to grow in ambition and
scope, with more than 18,000 students participating
in exhibition tours and studio workshops. The
Politics of Space, a teen program created in
partnership with King George Secondary School
and the Pacific Cinémathèque, encouraged youth
to explore the issue of homelessness through the
creation of artworks inspired by the work of Brian
Jungen. 2006 also saw an expansion of “teach the
teacher programs” through partnerships with the
University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser
University.
The Gallery’s many programs would not be possible
without the more than 300 Gallery volunteers
who served the organization. Volunteers met the
increasing needs of supersunday, FUSE and other
programs, as well as the Founders Day Celebration,
the 75th Anniversary Gala and Art Auction and the
new Gallery Ambassador program.

vancouver art gallery 2006 financial statements 55
We have audited the balance sheet of the Vancouver Art Gallery
Association (“the Association”) as at December 31, 2006 and the
statements of operations, changes in net assets and cash flows for the
year then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of
the Association’s management. Our responsibility is to express an
opinion on these financial statements based on our audit.
We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally
accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we plan and
perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial
statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes
examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and
disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing
the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by
management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement
presentation.
In our opinion, these financial statements present fairly, in all material
respects, the financial position of the Association as at December 31, 2006
and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year then
ended in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting
principles. As required by the Society Act (British Columbia), we report
that, in our opinion, these principles have been applied on a basis
consistent with that of the preceding year.

vancouver art gallery association notES to finanCial StatEmEntS year ended december 31, 2006
1. purpose of the organization:
the vancouver art gallery association (the “association”) is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in april 93 under the society act (british columbia). its objectives are to establish and maintain an art gallery for the perpetual benefit of the city of vancouver and its citizens. it is a registered canadian charity for canadian income tax purposes.
2. Significant accounting policies:
these financial statements have been prepared in accordance with canadian generally accepted accounting principles for not-for-profit organizations and include the following significant accounting policies:
(a) fund accounting:
these financial statements include the undernoted funds which are segregated for purposes of carrying on specific activities as described below.
(i) the general fund reflects the results of general operations of the association.
(ii) the acquisitions fund was established with bequests from donors and receives income earned by the vancouver art gallery endowment fund for acquisitions of art, which is administered by the vancouver foundation (note 3).
(iii) the life benefactors endowment fund was initially established during 989 and the income from the fund is intended to finance special projects as determined by the board of trustees in consultation with the life benefactors (note 3).
(iv) the vancouver arts stabilization team fund was estab-lished from restricted contributions received from the gerald and sheahan mcgavin capital grant to the arts (note 8).
(b) basis of accounting:
(i) cash and cash equivalents:
cash and cash equivalents consist of cash and highly liquid investments with terms to maturity of three months or less at the date of inception.
(ii) prepaid and exhibition expenses:
the balance is comprised primarily of exhibition expendi-tures that have been paid by the association and relate to exhibitions to be held the following year.
(iii) inventories:
inventories are comprised primarily of books, jewellery, paper products, gifts, reproductions and clothing held for sale in the gallery store and are stated at the lower of cost and net realizable value.
(iv) revenue recognition:
the association follows the deferral method of accounting for contributions which include donations, bequests and government grants. under this method of accounting, revenue received which relates to a future period is deferred and recognized in that subsequent period. endowment contributions are recorded as direct increases in net assets.
exhibition loan fees are recognized as revenue when received, except for the portion relating to a future period which is deferred and recognized in that subsequent period.
gallery store and artist edition revenue is recognized as revenue as sales are made.
unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue when received or receivable. pledged amounts are recorded as revenue when the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated, typically when signed pledge forms are received, and ultimate collection is reasonably assured. at december 3, 2006, the association has recorded $ 20,470 (2005 - $0,577) of pledges as revenue and accounts receivable.
externally restricted contributions are reported as revenue when the restrictions imposed by the contributors on the use of the monies are satisfied.
(v) capital assets:
capital assets are recorded at cost and are amortized on a straight-line basis over the useful lives of the assets. the useful lives of assets are as follows:
aSSEt ratE
computers 3 – 5 years
equipment 3 – 0 years
furniture and building fixtures 5 – 25 years
the association is responsible for the management of these assets and enjoys beneficial ownership thereof. title to the majority of these assets is vested in the city of vancouver.
(vi) pension plan:
the association maintains a defined contribution plan for its employees. pension plan costs for the employees of the association are funded annually and charged to operating expenses. these costs totaled $ 38,36 during 2006 (2005 - $23,764).
(vii) employee future benefits:
the association accrues its obligations under employee benefit plans and the related costs as the underlying services are provided.
(viii) collection (see note 2):
additions to the collection are charged as an expense on the acquisitions fund in the year of acquisition.
(ix) donated works of art, materials and services:
the association receives donated works of art, materials and services, the value of which is not reflected in these financial statements.
(x) use of estimates:
the preparation of financial statements requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenue and expenses during the year. significant areas requiring the use of management estimates relate to the determination of useful lives of capital assets for amortization, allowance for doubtful accounts and provisions, if any, for contingencies. actual results may differ from these estimates.
