HEART VALVE DISEASE

Stenosis is when the valve opening becomes narrow and restricts blood flow.

Regurgitation is when blood leaks backward through a valve, sometimes due to prolapse.

◦ Prolapse is when a valve slips out of place or the valve flaps (leaflets) do not close properly.

CAUSES OF HEART VALVE DISEASE

Congenital

Acquired causes:◦ Aging/ Degenerative changes

◦ Rheumatic heart disease

◦ Cardiomyopathy “enlarged heart”

◦ Infection of the valve (infective endocarditis)

DIAGNOSIS

Heart murmur on auscultation (listening with a stethoscope)

Echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) – confirm the diagnosis and assess severity (mild, moderate or severe)
