Equity Management
Built on Integrity
and Experience
The Benefit of Experience
At Van Dien Asset Management LLC, we believe
that fundamental research combined with active
portfolio management is essential to drive superior
returns. Since the early 1990s, Kent Blair, CFA,
has served as the technology-media-telecom (TMT)
equity analyst for major buy-side investment
managers. Prior to that, he served as a portfolio
manager within The Bank of New York’s institutional
and high net worth asset management divisions.
We understand the technological challenges,
the regulatory landscape, and the competitive
forces that serve as a backdrop for investing in
the dynamic TMT arena.
We also understand how the daily information
flow affects the global equity markets. Armed
with extensive relationships throughout the TMT
investment field, Mr. Blair strives to stay a step
ahead of the investment community.
This ongoing process of information analysis,
coupled with our concentrated focus on TMT,
should allow for superior investment decision
making and higher returns over various
market cycles.
Why Invest in Technology, Media and Telecom?
In today’s Information Age, the convergence of
computing technologies, media content, and
communication networks is increasingly evident.
We believe that understanding each of the various
TMT segments leads to informed insights across
the entire TMT universe. Van Dien’s investment
manager has leveraged these synergies as a TMT
analyst for nearly twenty years. Other reasons
why focused TMT portfolios should be part of a
comprehensive investment strategy include:
Innovation is a Key Driver of Economic Growth.
Business process improvements and technological
advancements are the primary drivers of improving
productivity across industries and advancing the
world’s standard of living.
Large Percentage of Equity Market. Technology
is, in fact, the largest sector within the S&P 500
and the greater TMT arena represents about
one-third of the S&P 500 index.
Strong Balance Sheets. 75% of technology
companies in the S&P 500 have cash balances
greater than debt versus just 27% for the overall
S&P 500.
Why Our CFA Credential Matters
Today’s financial markets demonstrate the impor-
tance of having reliable evidence of your financial
adviser’s integrity, experience, and commitment.
Among the credentials that financial professionals
may hold, none are more highly regarded than or
as rigorously focused on investment knowledge as
the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation. CFA
charterholders embody the following core tenets:
Ethics. Every CFA charterholder is required to
annually sign a statement declaring adherence to
the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of
Professional Conduct.
Knowledge and Experience. Every CFA charter-
holder has at least four years of industry experience
and has passed 18 hours of rigorous examinations.
Global Relevance. The CFA charter has become the
global professional investment credential. There are
CFA charterholders in more than 130 countries, with
increasing demand worldwide for the CFA program.
Recognition. The Economist has called the CFA
credential the “gold standard” of the investment
industry.
