VENTURE 7
NIGHTLIFE
If you grew up like me, you remember your mom instructing you over and over again at dinner to, “Get your elbows off the table,” or, “Quit playing with your food!” While learning manners seemed inconvenient at the time, I’m now – years later – teaching my own daughter those same manners with earnest gravitas.
To the dismay of my child self, manners are truly important; we all know that. This realization starts happening in young adulthood, when we’ve become hypersensitive to the opinions of those around us. We desperately want to fit in while impressing the opposite sex. And as adults – while many of us have a solid foundation of the basics – there are still times where we’re met with that frantic fear of potentially making a serious faux pas at the dinner table. (Why do I have three forks?!)
With a constant stream of weddings, company dinners and military balls, there’s still good reason to sharpen our etiquette knives, so to speak.
To help us with all of the important mannerly milestones, the Kadena Officers’ Club will host a fine dining lesson aptly titled, “Art of the Meal.”
Join us Saturday, March 21 to learn an array of social principles, as well all the taboos and social graces concerned with fine dining. This event is for teens ages 12 and up and adults.
I spoke with Jacob Shell, operations supervisor at the Officers’ Club, in order to glean some more information about the Art of the Meal.
Hi, Jacob. Why is it so important to learn the basic skills of etiquette at an early age?As young people progress through their teenage years and into adulthood, they’ll be presented with numerous situations where it’s important to know how to properly comport one’s self in public. Having the knowledge of what to do at a formal or semi-formal event will ease nervousness and create a sense of pride in those who have a good working knowledge of how to behave.
What skill(s) will the participants learn that can be applied to everyday life? All of the topics covered will give attendees (and maybe even parents, too) a good idea of how to handle themselves in any fine dining situation. The goal is that participants come away from this
fun event with the knowledge to confidently navigate “table important” events such as formal dinners commemorating the achievements of family and loved ones, school, civic, or church functions, business interviews and meetings, or even... awkward first dates.
How will these skills help in other areas of our lives? Having a solid grasp on dining etiquette aids in understanding how others perceive you. Young people in particular often strive to be taken seriously by adults, their peers, and important people in their lives. Feeling capable of appropriate presentation at the dinner table gives them a leg up in being heard and regarded as a person with maturity. They feel more confident, and you will too!
Interested in attending the Art of the Meal? Tickets go on sale Sunday, March 1 at the Kadena Officers’ Club Customer Service Desk.
In the meantime, you can find me at the dinner table debating which fork to use with my tortellini. That one? Yes, let’s go with that one.
La fin.

Palette KumojiThis shopping center is chock full of fashion stores and also includes restaurants, a theater, a museum, and an art gallery. Two of my favorite Japanese stores are located in Palette: Tower Records and MUJI, a minimalist and eco-friendly consumer goods shop. –Reece
Animate NahaAnimate is Japan’s largest retailer of anime, games, and manga – and for Okinawa, Animate Naha is about as good as it gets. Just look for the capsule-like elevator and the blue sign. Animate is located on the 3rd floor. –Reece
Okashigoten KokusaiThis Okinawan purple potato–or benimo–pastry shop is filled with tons of treats, and they even let you sample pretty much everything. Café des Tartes is located just inside the store, offering a wide variety of benimo pastries including ice cream and soft serve! I left Okashigoten with tea, cookies, and a very happy tummy. Just look for the big purple pastries! –Leya
Inaka SobaIf you’re brave enough to explore the meandering alleyways within Heiwadori Shoutengai, you may come across a small soba restaurant known as, “Inaka Soba.” For only 390 yen you get one hearty bowl of amazing soba. If you’re lost, ask a storeowner for directions and they should help you. That’s how we found it! –Reece
Naha’s Kokusaidori —or “International Street”—is a multicultural mishmash of restaurants, shops, and entertainment. In fact, there’s no
telling what you may discover here on any given day! That’s why we got together and mapped out a few spots both popular and “off-the-beaten-path” for you to find on your next adventure.
Join us and see why we’re so crazy about Kokusai.

SuitenroIf you’re in the mood for Okinawan cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Suitenro. With traditional Japanese-style tables, soothing sanshin folk music, and delicious food, you’ll delight in this cultural dining experience. I particularly admire the painted Ryukyuan warriors that line the back wall.–Reece
Don QuijoteWe spent nearly two hours in this five-story department store packed with some of the coolest things ever, from selfie sticks and “green tea” Kit Kats to gorgeous bedding and camping gear. Don Quijote alone is worth a trip to Kokusai Street. Never a dull moment! –Kim
Okinawa TeaThis new Okinawan tea shop boasts delicious herbal teas made from the best ingredients. Most blends are combined for health and wellness purposes. In fact, one of their most popular teas contains 28 different blends that help control blood pressure and circulation. Consumers come from all over the island and beyond! Keep your eyes peeled for this hidden treasure of tea. –Raquel
Nagamine’s HoneyOne of my favorite Kokusai discoveries is a small stand on Heiwadori and a lovely lady named Nagamine Junko who sells Hagoromo honey. This honey is aptly named for the legendary feathered mantel of an angel that married Hakuryoo, a humble fisherman. Like the name, this locally produced honey is heavenly in every sense of the word. Feeling under the weather? Grab a specially modified blend of honey with a little extra punch (awamori) intended to sooth a variety of ailments.–Ryan
Jump StationOn the second floor near Doutor Coffee you’ll see Luffy from One Piece and Naruto hanging out! That’s because it’s the entrance to the Shounen Jump store. Here you’ll find character goods and apparel featuring some of your favorite anime heroes. If you know someone in to Dragonball or Bleach, you’ll want to stop by. –Kim

Meet the Aeronautical ExpertsBy Ryan Burger
The Kadena Aero Club, located in the heart of Kadena Air Base, was founded December 12, 1965 when the Naha Air Base Aero Club was dissolved. They started off with a Piper Tri-Pacer,
Piper Cub J-3 and two Aeronca Champion aircraft. Today, the Aero Club fleet consists of Cessna 172 and Liberty XL single-engine planes.
The Kadena Aero Club boasts over 120 active members, a top-tier facility, flight simulators, ground school, testing and aircraft rentals. They also offer an extremely popular aerial tour program, flown by seasoned and highly knowledgeable pilots, during which passengers experience the beauty of Okinawa from the skies.
PERSONALITIESScott Mase •10 years of flight experience •Prior Air Force - KC-135 Crew Chief •Kadena Aero Club Manager
Lance Dale •50 years of flight experience •Prior Air Force •The Kadena Aero Club’s popular Aerial Tour pilot •Taught as a professor at Ohio University •Retired FAA International Flight Inspection Pilot

RECREATION
When did you first realize you were interested in becoming a pilot?
Scott: My earliest memories are from walking through the airport with my grandma, staring through the terminal windows at those big, beautiful airliners like the Boeing 727. I remember thinking to myself, “I want to fly one of those!” Of course, Star Wars was a huge influence for my generation; who didn’t want to be Han Solo or Luke Skywalker piloting an X-Wing?
Then of course I grew up, joined the Air Force, and I was able to get into a flying job with the tankers like the KC-135. It really ended up being the perfect match for me.
Lance: There was never a time when I was not interested in flying. I’ve always been interested.
What’s your favorite thing about being a private pilot?
L: My favorite thing has to be the fact that as a licensed private pilot I can carry a
passenger. Frankly, until you have that license, you’re flying by yourself, as a student or with an instructor. Once you become a private pilot you can take a friend, and to me that’s very satisfying.
S: For me it’s the fact that you can simply pull the keys and go for a flight. Everything disappears when you’re flying. You climb into the cockpit, fire up the engine, and any problems you have simply vanish. It’s a surreal experience, and once you’re back in your car and hit that first stoplight, reality comes crashing down around you. It’s like going on the perfect vacation for an hour at a time, anytime you want it.
What’s your favorite thing about the Kadena Aero Club?
S: I like the customers we get to meet. The folks we deal with day-to-day come to the Aero Club because they want to improve themselves by learning a new skill, or they want to experience Okinawa from a different perspective as a tour passenger. The fact that we’re allowed to do this, not only as part of the Air Force, but in a country where general aviation isn’t very popular, and on a gorgeous island in the middle of the Pacific – it carries a certain exclusivity.
The Aero Club has a few planes for customers to fly. Do you have a favorite model?
L: The Cessna 172 is my favorite for light, general aviation. It holds a lot of fuel, can carry four people, and by design it allows you to look down through the windows to the scenery below. It’s a fantastic tour aircraft.
S: The Liberty XL is an awesome plane; it has a stick instead of a yoke like the Cessna. The cockpit is partial glass giving you a panoramic view. It handles beautifully, stalls nice, recovers easily, flies straight – and all of the maneuvers are great. The Cessna has a little more power for carrying a heavier load, but the two-seat Liberty is a little faster once you’re in cruise.
Flying around Okinawa must be a fantastic experience! What’s your favorite part?
L: The passengers -- their reactions to
the color of the waters, the beauty of the cliffs, the panoramic views of the island. The people just go nuts! I love it. One of the great things is that over the years I’ve learned a lot about Okinawa by reading books and whatnot - and I like to share that knowledge with the tour passengers as we fly past different landmarks. A good example is the Airakuen Sanatorium, a pre-WWII leper colony on Yagaji Island. I had no idea it was there but now I do, all thanks to a passenger.
So what do I need to become a private pilot?
S: Simple. You need to obtain a private pilot certificate. We have an excellent staff of instructors that will help take care of you. Our facility is top-notch with plenty of room, great classrooms, briefing rooms and several simulators – and we’re an FAA certified testing center. As a bonus, we’re right next to the flight line, so the walk to the planes is short.
What would you recommend to a person that might be interested in flying but is nervous about starting the journey?
L: We can get you flying your first time here. If you’re 16 years or older - we have
something called an Introductory Flight or a “First Flight Lesson.” Essentially we’ll go over the four basics of flight: straight and level flight, turns, climbs and descents.
It just so happens that there is no maneuver that you can do in an airplane that is not made up of a combination of those four basic principles. The basics of anything are important - you can be in an F-15 going straight up doing vertical rolls, which are still just a combination of those four basics.
After that, we’ll go out to the plane for about an hour and the student will get to do the four basics. We’ll start with straight and level flight which happens to be the easiest, but that’s not why we start with it: it’s the foundation for the other three, so we won’t move on to the next principle until you’ve mastered the first. By the end of the hour, you can fly an airplane. You’ll know how to set the power, adjust the trim, make corrections. You can’t take off and land yet, but you’ll know how to fly.Oh, and here’s a bonus – that time can be
logged! You can hang on to your invoice and if you decide to take flying lessons your instructor can take that time and transfer it into a log book that will count towards your certificate.
The Introductory Flight is the same price as our tours: $199. And it’s really the perfect way to try out flying. We’d have to say most people become pretty enthused about it, continue flying and become a member of the Aero Club!
S: One extra thing: As a student, it doesn’t really matter on which airframe you learn to fly. Once you learn to fly, you can check out any of the other aircraft you want. It’s awesome! What are you waiting for? Come fly with us!
TL;DR? The Kadena Aero Club is your one-stop-shop for your aviation cravings. Want to see Okinawa from the sky? Book a tour or start your own journey to pilotdom. They are the only FAA certified testing center in Japan, and they’ll get you on the right path to completing your certification. Give them a call at 050-5865-1885 (DSN: 966-7301), drop by Building 736, or visit kadenafss.com/fly for more information.
You climb into the cockpit, fire up the engine, and any problems you have simply vanish.

RECREATIONKuk Sool Won™Classes at RisnerBy Christine Phillipp
Today, allow yourself to be stronger than
you’ve ever been before–and the weakest you will
ever be again.
Kuk Sool Won™ is a Korean martial arts system that blends different techniques and classifications into one unique style. One of the primary principles of Kuk Sool Won is internal power. However, it’s misleading to consider it an exclusively internal martial art since it also contains kicking, punching, joint and pressure point manipulation, weapons training, and more.
This complex yet easily learned style is taught at the Risner Fitness Center under the instruction of Gideon Juko. Gideon has been practicing martial arts since the bright age of 9. In fact, he loved it so much that he became an apprentice teacher at age 17 and hasn’t stopped practicing or teaching since. In his own words:
“Over the years I’ve had the privilege and honor of learning from some of the best martial art masters around the world. Every single one of my instructors, in their own unique way, has contributed to my
development as a martial artist. I owe everything to each and every one of them. So in order to pay it forward, I’ve made it our mission here at Kuk Sool Won of Kadena to provide the finest instruction in the mental, physical, and character building aspects of the martial arts. To educate and empower adults and children with the knowledge that fosters a positive and healthy lifestyle. We continue to diligently research and push ourselves so that we may further refine and improve our programs.”
In the Juko household, Kuk Sool Won is a family affair. His daughter, Alisha, is also an instructor at the Fitness Center and takes on the youth classes while Gideon focuses on the adults. This sense of a martial arts family however is not exclusive to the Juko home. Gideon makes it a priority to bring the youth and adult classes together every few weeks to practice outside of the Fitness Center in places like parks or beaches in order to strengthen the bond of the Risner martial arts family.

“We seek to provide personal instruction in every class. Each student is provided the skills to become a community contributor, a complex thinker, a collaborative worker, a life-long learner, an effective communicator, and a quality producer. In connection with 18 FSS/Risner Fitness Center, we strive to provide the best professional martial arts training facility for residents of Kadena Air Base and all of the neighboring U.S. military bases on Okinawa. Our endeavor is to create an environment that gives each individual the opportunity to pursue and achieve a greater level of success. We welcome everyone to come into the Risner Fitness Center and try our Kuk Sool Won program.”
What people find most appealing about the Kuk Sool Won class is the ease of technique. Learning this type of martial art is great for both kids and adults, and there are beginner and advanced classes available so you’re able to learn and continue your education while on island.
Students hoping to earn a black belt needn’t look any further, while those PCSing in the midst of their practice will most likely find opportunities to continue Kuk Sool Won at the next base.
If you would like to learn more about this unique martial art and how to begin or continue your practice, please contact the Risner Fitness Center at 634-5128 or visit www.kadenamartialarts.com. Adult and youth classes are available year-round.

Prepare for an ultimate sandwich experience
History: In 1930, a Philadelphia hot dog cart owner named Pat Olivieri grew bored of grilling the same, plain old hot dogs day after day, so he made the decision to instead experiment with grilling beef. The Steak Sandwich made its debut when a nearby taxicab driver was drawn to the hearty aroma and ordered the first one. Rumors of the delicious lunch swiftly set ablaze in the city and the simple sandwich made headlines, causing a rather high demand in a hurry. Life changed even more for the cart owner when he decided to add cheese to the sandwich. It became so popular that his business eventually expanded from a mobile cart to a corner sandwich shop, and the Philly Cheese Steak has been a hometown staple and worldwide favorite ever since.
