McCarthy: American Experience MON Jan 6 | 9p This film chronicles the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator who would test the limits of American democracy. Free of restraint or oversight, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being Communists and enemies of the state, a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations and bullying intimidation.
Sanditon on Masterpiece series premieres SUN Jan 12 | 9pJane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817, when she turned her thoughts to a happier subject. She started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a seaside town – but sadly, she died before it was finished. For this series, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies picked up Austen’s plot and took it in a glorious new direction.
Expedition with Steve Backshall series premieres WED Jan 15 | 10pIn this spectacular series, adventurer and wildlife expert Steve Backshall ventures into uncharted territory in pursuit of new discoveries. From river rafting in the Himalayas to trekking through the jungles of South America and climbing mountains in the Middle East, Steve takes on extreme physical challenges, encountering extraordinary wildlife and meeting remarkable people along the way.
Vienna Blood series premieres SUN Jan 19 | 10pThis new series is set in 1900s Vienna – a hotbed of philosophy, science and art, where clashes of culture and ideas play out in the city’s grand cafés and opera houses. Max Liebermann is a brilliant young English doctor studying under the famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Max is keen to understand the criminal mind and begins to work with Oskar Rheinhardt, a detective inspector in the Vienna Police Department.

Inspector Morse series encore begins SAT Jan 18 | 9:30pThe original series returns! Based on the novels by Colin Dexter, Inspector Morse is the classic that started it all, from the spinoff Lewis to the recent prequel Endeavour.
John Thaw stars as the Oxford detective whose intelligent, methodical approach to solving crimes is matched only by his penchant for opera and beer. Kevin Whately debuts in his role as the down-to-earth Sergeant Lewis. Their superb acting and Dexter’s compelling plots combine to create a show that deserves its position on the short list of TV’s greatest detective series.
Decade of Division MON–TUE | Jan 13–14 | 9pHeading into the 2020 election, the United States has been described as more divided than at any time since the Civil War. In a two-part, four-hour special series, FRONTLINE examines the growth of a toxic political environment that has deepened the gulf between Americans over the past decade.
