• Known for his vivid colors and

emotional impact.

• Suffering from anxiety and frequent

bouts of mental illness throughout

his life.

• van Gogh's interest in art started at an

early age. He began to draw as a child, but

did not begin painting until his late twenties,

completing many of his best-known works

during his last two years of life.

• In just over a decade (12 years), he

produced more than 2,000 artworks,

consisting of about 900 paintings and 1,100

drawings and sketches. His work included

self portraits, landscapes, portraits, and

paintings of cypresses, wheat fields, and

sunflowers.

How does this painting make you feel

because of the types of lines used?

• Van Gogh's night sky is a field of

roiling energy. Below the

exploding stars, the village is a

place of quiet order. Connecting

earth and sky is the flame-like

cypress, a tree traditionally

associated with graveyards and

mourning. But death was not scary

for van Gogh. "Looking at the

stars always makes me dream."
