flier from P i t t sburgh . Pa., walked away from his burn ing converted Navy fighter plane Tuesday a f t e r -noon unhur t , a l though the F 8 F Bearcat was completely demolish- J i'd. Will iams came in on a n East wind to land at Simmons-Nott a i r -port near New Bern at 1430 Tues-day a f t e r being turned about by ad-verse weather conditions near j Elizabeth City.

The noted veteran of both Naval uud Marine aviation was enroute from Palm Beach. Fia. , to New York and had flown over New Bern less than 2u minutes pr ior to the crash, l i e blamed the crash on a landing gear fa i lure , adding that ei ther his lef t wheel "failed to come down" or collapsed when the Bearcat hit the runway .

The pilot f u r t h e r said that h is wheel indicators were in position but when his ship h i t the runway the left wing dipped on that side. The plane sagged to the point where the belly t ank scraped along the runway, igniting the gasoline.

The tank exploded and Major Williams was completely sur-rounded by flames. He leaped through the flar£les/to the r u n w a j and got away from the plane. Fire-men f rom nearby New Bern rushed lo the scene but, were unable to , ave any par t of the plane. I t was ompletely demolished.

For the past few year6. Major Williams has been sales manage r tor the Gulf Gasoiine company and >j»ent some time in Naval aviation right a f t e r World War I. H e then went into civilian aviat ion and af ter a shory period of time, he went back into the mil i tary avia ' o n branch but th is t ime in Ma'-: ;ne Corps Aviation.

One of many of Major Will iams .n hiyvements in his lengthy avia-' ion career was a speed record he - ' at Mitchell Field. Lonn Is land, N Y.. ,in 1922. The speed record " a s in effect for eight years .
