Volume of Prisms

09/05/2012

Learning objectives:

Level 6: All will be able to find the volume of a cuboid and shapes made up with cuboids.

Level 7: Most will be able to find the volume of different shaped right prisms including composite prisms.

Level 8: Some will be able to find the volume of more complex prisms where they have to find missing lengths or take volume away.

The Volume of a Prism

Cuboid Triangular prism

Pentagonal prism

• Volume of a prism

= area of cross-section x vertical height

A prism is a 3-D shape which has the same cross-section throughout its height.

Example

10cm

Find the Volume of this triangular prism.

Example

6cm

5cm

10cm

Area of cross section = ½ x base x height

= ½ x 5 x 6

= ½ x 30

= 15cm2

Volume of a prism = Area of cross section x depth

Volume of a prism = 15 x 10

= 150cm3

Meet Floppy and Jasmine

You have just been employed at your local pet shop, and your first customer is your maths teacher.I need a rabbit hutch – simple.I do however, have specific requirements.1)My rabbits Floppy and Jasmine like lots of room to hop around in – at least 120m³2)Obviously the more room the better but my garden is very small so I can only fit a hutch which is 160m³ or less3)I would prefer something that looks exciting and not just a boring cuboid shaped one; if the hutch is cuboid shaped – I want it to have something attached to it to make it look nicer.4)I can afford to spend up to £105, but that includes the hutch and the accessories for it. I need to also buy sawdust, a food bowl and a water bottle.

You can work with another colleague, providing they share their desk with you at work. However, that means you have to split the commission.
