Introduction to Poetry

• One of the three major forms of literature.

• Usually concise or short • Written in lines and stanzas• Can be musical (song lyrics are

poetry)• Often emotionally charged

Poetry Vocabulary Terms

Poems often have two meanings: • Literal meaning-the simplest,

ordinary, most obvious meaning

• Figurative meaning-the deeper, analytical meaning– There is not always a figurative

meaning. Some poems can just be “on the surface.”

Poetry Vocabulary Terms Poems can be written in three major

ways:• open poetic form-used in poems that do

not have consistency in elements such as rhyme, line length, and metrical form

• closed poetic form-used in poems with a fixed structure and pattern

• free verse-lines with no pattern or structure at all– A type of open form, often follows called

stream of consciousness

Other Terms to Know • Couplet-a pair of lines, usually

rhymed

• Narrative poem-a poem that tells a story

Poetry Vocabulary TermsLiterary Devices Used in Poetry: • Alliteration-the repetition of consonant

sounds, particularly at the beginning of words

• Assonance-the repetition of similar vowel sounds

• Rhyme-the repetition of sounds at the end of words

• Rhythm-a pattern of time (the beat)

• Extended Metaphor-a comparison that is carried throughout the work

• Simile-comparison between two unlike things using words such as "like” or “as”

• Imagery-word(s) representing a sensory experience (5 senses)– language that creates a picture in your mind
