Center for Civic Education-Pakistan (CCE) isa nonprofit organization that functions as anindependent research, civic education, trainingand advocacy body. The CCE provokescreative ways of thinking and promotestolerance for dissenting viewpoints to tacklethe problems emanat ing f rom thetransformation in the Pakistani society and itschanging norms and values. The mission ofthe Center for Civic Education Pakistan is toempower the individual by promoting valuesof responsible citizenship and principles ofdemocracy in Pakistan.

The main aim of the CCE is to cultivate andnurture civic culture, civic courage and valuesof freedom, tolerance, peace, rule of law anddemocracy to strengthen civil society. For thisthe CCE conducts civic education, facilitatesdemocratic dialogue, arranges trainings, andruns advocacy campaigns besides undertakingresearch on issues that shape our social,political and economic future. The CCEcritically examines existing socio-economicpolicies and suggests alternatives besidesmonitoring democratic developments to makePakistani democracy inclusive and meaningful.

In its work the CCE targets a cross section ofsociety particularly the politicians, theparliamentarians, lawyers, doctors, engineers,entrepreneurs, industrialists, businessmen,agriculturists, academia, intellectuals,journalists, youth, students, women, minoritiesand civic activists to promote active citizenshipwith realization of civic and economic rights.

About Researchers:

Matiullah Jan is Media Law and PolicyAdvisor at Internews Pakistan, a non-profit organization, working for freedomof expression and access to information.Mr . Jan has done Masters inInternational Journalism from CityUniversity, London. He holds a uniquehonor of working with print, wire andelectronic media. In 1999-2000 he wasawarded PTV National Award. Mr. Janhas worked for Radio Pakistan (1989-1999) as English News Anchor,Research Fellow, Institute of StrategicStudies (ISSI), and as Supreme Courtcorrespondent for The Frontier Post dailyand News Network International (NNI).

Zafarullah Khan is Islamabad basedPolitical Management Consultant withspecialization in political communicationand strategy. He holds a masters degreein Media and Communication fromLondon School of Economics. As ajournalist he launched the annual Stateof Media and Press Freedom Report inPakistan in 1995. In 2002 he authoredState of Political Parties Report:Struggling for Survival and in 2004 Stateof Political Parties: Disabled by Design.Presently Mr. Khan is working asExecutive Director of Center for CivicEducation Pakistan
