Talk to us
Please write questions or comments in the chat window during the seminar, at any time. “Talking” during the presentation is a good activity, not distracting. Someone may be very interested in what you say.
At times, I will ask you questions during the seminar. My questions will look like this, and you can answer this one now if you want to do so.
Question: In what country do you live?
Lisa Obradovich is monitoring the chat window. She will tell me your comment, if it is directed to me. Thank you, Lisa!

What can you learn from me?
Each of us has goals and desires. Each of us faces challenges in obtaining what we want. Each of us has strengths and powers that enable us to succeed.
In my life, I started work in a medical research laboratory, then became a laboratory equipment operator, computer programmer, data manager, and now manager of software development and data management teams.
What do I know that may help you?
There is a technique I learned for analyzing, planning and achieving my goals, that may help you achieve your own.
It is called “The 3 P’s of Power.”

Question: What do you wish to achieve?
Long-term goals, such as Professional success Better standard of living Societal change
Medium-term goals, such as Owning a computer Improved health Having a better place to live
Short-term goals, such as A good meal Accomplishing the day’s work
Everyone has goals. Everyone can achieve something.
Please write a goal in the chat window, if you are willing to share one.NetHope Academy - WTC, September 2013

How do we obtain what we want?
Questions to ask yourself:
What are my goals? We must know what we want.
What powers do I have now, that relate to my goals? What powers do I have through other people? We must know the starting place.
How can I use my powers to achieve my goals? We must think of ways to go from the start to the finish.

The 3 P’s of PowerPositionPerformancePeople
Les 3 P’s du PouvoirPostePerformancePersonnes
힘자리의 힘 , 직위능력의 힘 , 기능사람의 힘 , 인적 네트워크
Los 3 P’s de la PotenciaPositionPruebaPersonas
Position. Having a title is the most well-known form of power. Titular power gives authority over other people.
Performance. Competence is earned through effort. Performance contributes to power if other people know about your skills.
People. We can accomplish great things through other people, our “human network.”

What Powers of Position do you have?
Professional? You are “Programmer”, “Engineer”, “Technician”, “Student”, “Manager”, “Teacher”
Family? You are “Mother”, “Sister”, “Cousin”, “Niece”
Organizational? (any group, large or small) You are “Member”, “Secretary”, “Treasurer”, “Facilitator”, “Volunteer”, “Leader”, “Coordinator”, “Planner”, “Supporter”, “Idea Person”
On the web? (Do you blog, use forums, Tweet, share links on Facebook or LinkedIn?) You are “Writer”, “Expert”, “Thinker”, “Commentator”
These titles give you the power to direct or influence others.
Question: What is one title that people call you?

What Powers of Performance do you have?
Technical skill? Knowledge? Persuasive speaking? Organizational skill? Supervisory skill? Mentoring, teaching, tutoring skill? Analytic or evaluation skill?
The Power of Performance is a measure of your competence. It may be known only to you, or it may be recognized by other people. It lets you accomplish some things yourself, and others trust you because you do your work well.
Question: What is an area in which you are very competent?

What Powers of People do you have?
Who shares your goals? Who is willing to assist you in some way? Who has information that can help you? Who respects you? Who is respected by others? Who provides support, encouragement, love and affection to you?
Our network gives us the benefit of learning from those who gained success in the past, and we contribute to those who need help now and in the future. This is the Power of People.
Question: Who is one person in your network of people? What types of power does that person have?

Power is a tool. Use it wisely.
When a person has power, there is temptation to use it badly.
Corruption: Power of position, used for personal gain
Rape: Power of performance (physical strength) used for personal or political exhibition
Evil gossip: Power of people used to damage the reputation of another person
With power comes a responsibility to use it wisely, with awareness of the consequences to other people. Misuse of power can cause great suffering.

Now let’s look at examples of using the 3 P’s of Power well.
20
Example 1
My goal is simple. I am at work. I need to go home by 5:00pm (17:00h), but I cannot finish my work in time.
Position. I am not a manager. My job title does not let me control my schedule. My position does not give me power.
Performance. I do my job very well. I am honest and hard-working. I have the power of a good reputation.
People. A co-worker has needed my help in the past, and she knows how to do my job. My manager is a fair person. My cousin lives near me, and perhaps she can go to my house until I arrive. I have the power of friends.
My plan. 1), I will ask my co-worker to help me finish faster. I will ask if she can stay after 5:00pm. 2), I will remind my boss that I always perform well, and ask to leave at 5:00pm. I will tell him/her that my co-worker can stay if needed. 3), if my co-worker or boss will not help, I will call my cousin and ask her to help.

21
Example 2
I would like to obtain a better job. How can my powers help me?
Position. I work as a programmer. My title is User Interface Programmer. I have a little power of position.
Performance. I have a good sense of design and am very careful to avoid and correct errors. My resume looks good. I have some power of performance.
People. People respect me. I have handled change requests from numerous people in the company and followed up to be sure they were satisfied. I have many friends and a large family. I use LinkedIn and Facebook. I have some powers of people.
My plan. 1) I will ask those who request changes whether there are other opportunities within the company, and ask them to recommend me for openings. 2) I will ask friends and family to look for software jobs wherever they work. 3) I post my resume on LinkedIn and put a comment in Facebook about hoping to advance in responsibility.
NetHope Academy - WTC, September 2013
22
Example 3
My goal is very large. I would like to improve the economic situation of my people. How can my powers help me?
Position. I own a small business. Sometimes I speak in public. I have a reputation for being a clear thinker. I am not famous. Performance. I read and listen to others discuss economic problems. I opened my own business successfully and think that some could follow my example, but I know that it will not be right for everyone.People. I volunteer in a church group and assist a professional group. I have employees in my business, and we all have family and friends in this area. My plan. 1) I will start a discussion group called “We can help ourselves,” and invite all interested people and their friends or families, from work, church, the professional group. 2) We will define some precise goals and choose actions to take. 3) We will attempt them, one at a time, supporting each other. Some ideas will fail but I hope that some will succeed, and we will learn from attempt.

Your own example
I would like to __________________________________________________. How can my powers help me?
Position. My title is _______________. It can help me because ______________. (It does not help me because _______________.)
Performance. I am respected for _______________________________.
People. I have connections through __________________________ who know ____________________ and may be able to _____________________.
My plan. I will 1)___________2)___________3)____________.
Question: Can you use this pattern to make a plan for your goal? You may want to post it on NetHope-WTC’s LinkedIn forum.

Another P: Perseverance
Perseverance means continuing, even when you are discouraged or tired.
Perseverance means reviewing your plan and powers, to decide whether they are working adequately. You control the plan. Change it, if another path may be better.
Perseverance in pursuit of one goal may mean giving up others. It is better to choose one or a few.
