Some remarks• general rule, attendance at all classes, pracs etc is

compulsory, always

• Project time ≠ Holiday time, need to coordinate with supervisor. Do not just leave!

• students must choose two 5-credit sub-modules, either offered as a standalone special topic(s) or one or two of the existing 5-credit sub-modules from the stream other than their stream of specialisation

• i.e. for Applied Geology stream students you will be looking at 5 credit topic(s) from the Environmental Geochemistry Stream, and vice versa.

• At the moment the only standalone option not in either of the streams is: Process Mineralogy (Miller)+Advanced Mapping (Macey).

Research Seminars

= part of Special Topics (773)

• Usually Wednesdays @lunchtime, 1-2pm

• Will be announced via email, check your emails frequently!

• Compulsory

• Must attend min 80% of all seminars organised; or you may not graduate!

Course work and examination

• Language: English, only• Assessment:

– combination of continuous assessment, i.e. theory and practical work (e.g. class tests, practests, assignements … )

– And formal examination at the end of some sub-modules; in this case: 60:40 exam:class mark

• To pass Honours, >50% in each module is required (not sub-module)

Example:

12243 - 712 (20 credits) Crustal Evolution• Structural Geology (Kisters) [5]• Igneous Petrology (Clemens) [5]• Metamorphic Petrology (Buick) [5]• Geochronology (Miller) [5]

2nd opp & re-sit• If you have important issues, e.g. disabilities,

you must notify us well ahead in time, e.g. well ahead of exam.

• The Department is no obliged to allow 2nd

exam opportunities at Honours level. We might allow students to write re-sit. Evaluated on a case by case base.

More info on re-sit conditions in handbook:

Final Hons mark

• Avg Hons mark, and each module mark must be >50%

• Marks will be calculated according to weights outlined in Hons handbook, i.e. according to duration and credits of each sub-module and modules.

• Honours course cannot be repeated, i.e. failing more than 2 modules or research project means the student cannot graduate with a BSc Honours in Earth Sciences

Hons thesis

Details on formatting and submission on p. 11 in ES Hons Programme Handbook

& Some advice given during “Writing Skills” workshop (Miller)

Deadline for thesis submission : 2 November 2018, 11:00am*

*Start printing out at 10:30, might mean to miss the deadline and fail Honours.

Hons thesis

• By now, you should have a supervisor and a research topic

• Supervisor & Topics need to be communicated to Martina by 02 February 2018

• Supervisor’s role = guide you ≠ write/think for you

Hons thesis

* e.g. Prof Kisters and Dr Fietz students

Laboratory Analyses

Department: • Research microscopy Lab (Room 2037)• Env Geochem Lab (Room 1015)• Ultra-clean lab (quad)• Experimental Petrology

Always speak to your supervisor first and get his/her permission to request use of specific laboratories

Field equipment

Geological Compasses, GPS units and Geiger Counters, etc.

• Department has a stock

• may be able to take into the field

• needs of the undergraduate fieldwork take precedence, however!

• If you would like to take such equipment for your own fieldwork, you need to talk with the Senior Technical Officer (Mr George Olivier)

Safety in lab and on fieldwork

• All laboratories contain protective equipment and first-aid kits. Please ensure that these are in place and use them, as directed.

• All Hons students have to attend a workshop on Occupational Health and Safety, run on behalf of

the University.

Tuesday 06 Feb 2018, 10:00-16:00

Compulsory for all students, no exception (failing to attend may result in de-registration)!!!

CAF (Central Analytical Facilities)

• Some instruments located within Chamber of Mines building (e.g. SEM, ICP) and some located in other buildings (e.g. XRF).

• Get to know within class: “Analytical techniques & CAF” (Buick)Feb 05 - 16

Hons project

Keep the labs (rock, geochemistry, CAF..) clean.

Clean and return all used equipment before you submit your thesis or right upon submission; otherwise supervisors and reviewers might not evaluate your thesis.

Not George, Fiazel, or Martina’s (or supervisors’) job to clean the labs for you.

Computers

• Hons lab, Room 2023• MS Office, some Geol and Statistical software• Specialised software must be discussed with

and supplied by supervisor

• Back up your work regularly & keep the backup safe!

We have computer crashes, fires, thieves, etcon campus, happening at any time.

Media outreach product

• about your research, or one component of your research. • 1 per student• Free format,

e.g. newspaper article, tweets, multimedia assets .. • It must be exciting, and raise awareness about your research. • No marks; but you fail Honours in 2018 if you do not submit

anything

• Prize for the best story/product • assessed by a committee formed by ES

staff, post/undergrad students.
