President’s Messageby Martha Gisriel, PHR
Calling all speakers! Cumberland Valley SHRM is preparing the schedule of programs for 2013 and beyond. Monthly CVSHRM meetings offer topics of relevance to us as human resource professionals, in addition to providing an opportunity for certified attendees to earn HRCI recertification credits. We are currently seeking speakers and ideas for upcoming meetings. If you are interested in making a presentation at a future meeting or if you know someone who would like to do so, please contact a member of the CVSHRM Board.
CVSHRM chapter members possess a broad range of knowledge and experience, and it would be tremendous to hear what our members have to share. Our very own Jeannette Rudy Fitzwater gave an excellent presentation earlier this year and will speak once again at our December chapter meeting. I hope you will consider following Jeannette's lead and share your knowledge with us.
As a side note, chapter members are welcome to submit materials for publication in our monthly newsletter. Many thanks to Susan Small for her timely piece on the topic of disclosure of retirement plan fees in this month's issue. This topic will also be addressed at the Legal & Legislative Conference later this year.
Even though we are currently on hiatus from our monthly chapter meetings, CVSHRM is still active! Preparations are under way for several upcoming events. Please mark

your calendars for the New Member Mixer on Thursday, August 23, at Kaplan University. The Legal & Legislative Conference will take place on Thursday, September 20, at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown. Finally, CVSHRM will co-sponsor a Diversity Conference at Hagerstown Community College on Friday, November 9. More details will be forthcoming as those dates approach. Please contact me if you are interested in helping with any of these chapter activities.
We are always seeking sponsors for our chapter activities. If your company or someone you know would be willing to help sponsor our New Member Mixer, our Legal & Legislative Conference, or the Diversity Conference, please contact us. With regard to the L&L Conference, a sponsorship can help to defray the cost of conference attendance for student attendees. We can also accommodate vendors who would like to set up at one of the upcoming events. As always, we thank you for your support of Cumberland Valley SHRM.
Finally, we would like to grow our membership rolls, so please contact your fellow HR professionals who are not current members of our chapter and invite them to join us. The Northeast Region of SHRM (to which our chapter belongs) is actively seeking to expand its membership, and we could use your help to spread the word about the exciting things that CVSHRM membership has to offer.
Happy Summer!

Do you have an employee claiming the inability to work overtime because of a disability? See the 4 th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in Boitnott versus Corning on the SHRM or other websites. A claim made by Boitnott that he could work forty hours, but no overtime beyond that was denied protection under ADA by the Court.
See the data on the types of discrimination charges being filed by state by using this new link to the EEOC: http://www1.eeoc.gov/eeoc/statistics/enforcement/charges_by_state.cfm Claims of retaliation are high on the list.
Mark your calendar for September 20th. CVSHRM’s annual Legal and Legislative Conference will be held at Fountain Head CC. The conference speakers are reported to be among the best who practice employment law in the “Tristate” area. This year’s topics include:
1. A complete digest of all legal updates, federal and state. 2. The legal ramifications of the pre-employment process 3. A step-by-step guide to handling discrimination complaints and reasonable accommodation requests.4. The latest news in ERISA, including “Obamacare.”

Help your Business Community…Build your Brand! By Jeanette Rudy-Fitzwater
You have the opportunity to help educate the Washington County business community regarding HR-related issues. At the same time, you’ll help to position yourself as an “expert” locally. That’s a double win!The Washington County Chamber distributes its Connect newsletter on a monthly basis. Currently, they receive a series of articles regarding HR legal-related issues, which they publish on an every other month schedule. However, they tell me that they see the value of employee-related issues and would be willing publish articles on a monthly basis. Here’s an opportunity for you to have articles published with your name and company name (if your Company belongs to the Chamber) or in your name and CVSHRM. Since the other months are focused on legal concerns, we believe the community may benefit from some more developmental types of topics, such as employee engagement, retention, recruitment, and leadership. If you have an interest in submitting an article of 300 to 600 words, please contact Community/External Relations Chairperson, Jeannette Fitzwater at jfitzwater@mybank4.com or 301-533-2253.
