Transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2

• Joining Key Stage 2 (up the stairs!)

• Responsibility & Independence e.g. dinner money, letters, jumpers, book bag, homework, library books.

• Year 3 production (evening performance)

• Expectations of behaviour, quality and quantity of work and homework.

• Lunchbox Trolley

Maths

What you can do at home …

• Telling the time – quarter past, quarter to, and 5 minute intervals. Use analogue clocks as well as digital.

• Money – counting, describing, adding and finding change (real life).

• Times tables – must be secure in 2, 5 & 10 coming into Year 3.Then focus on 3, 4, 6, times tables including the division facts.

• Cooking & Making – any opportunity to weigh, measure, read scales to make things at home i.e. making a cake.

Build up to a ‘big write’ by

the end of the week.

Reading

• Children work in small groups reading with the teacher analysing what they have read to ensure that they have a full understanding of the text.

• Children are set a response task relating to what they have read for the following session and must work independently.

• Individual readers fortnightly with the teacher.

• Children can change their books on a weekly basis, as needed. We encourage children to read for understanding.

• Book Bands – slower progress between bands.

Reading at home…

Reading Records

• Please read 5 or more times a week with your child.• Write the date, the page numbers read and sign each time you read.• Only comment where necessary.• The teacher will check the records each week and after the child has

read 10 times they will receive a stamp in the book.• Once they receive 10 stamps in their books they will receive a

certificate.• Please look after the reading records carefully as there will be a 50p

charge to replace a lost reading record.

Inside the reading record there are tips for the person hearing them read, the phonics they need to know and word lists.
