House Bill Five Update

How will this affect your child now and in the

future?

• House Bill Five has components that are in effect now: – Reduction of HS EOC tests from 15 to 5• Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, US History

– HS English reading and writing tests combined– No double testing for middle school math

students– “NG” posted on report cards for students

denied credit for excessive absences

Special situation for MS students and math….• 7th grade student enrolled in Algebra I:

• You will take the Algebra I EOC only.• 8th grade student enrolled in Math 8 only:

• You will take the Math 8 STAAR test.• 8th grade student enrolled in Algebra I only:

• You will take the Algebra I EOC. • 8th grade student enrolled in Geometry only:

• You will take the Math 8 STAAR test and the Geometry final exam.

• 8th grade student enrolled in both Math 8 AND Algebra I: • You will take the Algebra I EOC only.

• Keep in mind…– All YWCPA students are expected to

pass ALL state assessments to be promoted within our campus– As a college preparatory campus, we

have high expectations for our students!

• All middle school students will: – review endorsements – complete career survey through

• Entering freshman will complete a Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) and select a pathway:

• PGP must have student and parent signature • Students will have to select an endorsement

(1 of 5)• We will offer STEM, Multidisciplinary,

and Arts and Humanities

• Every 9th grade student will start on the:

DISTINGUISHED ACHEIVEMENT PLAN

• What does this mean? – Must pass the five mandated EOCs. – 22 core credits – 4 endorsement credits – Diploma will stamp distinguished achievement

plus any accomplishments: • AP test scores• PSAT/SAT/ACT scores• Dual Credit coursework• Business/Industry certifications

• Courses offered for pathways and endorsements (please see handouts): – STEM– Arts and Humanities (AP Spanish)– Multidisciplinary – reduction of fine arts in grades 7 and 8

STEM endorsements offered at YWCPA 1A: Algebra 2, PreCal, Chemistry, Physics, Coherent sequence of

CTE courses (Concepts of Engineering, Engineering Design and Presentation, Scientific Research and Design)

1C: Algebra 2, PreCal, AP Statistics or AP Calculus, Chemistry, Physics

1D: Algebra 2, PreCal, Chemistry, Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science (2 advanced sciences required)

1E: Coherent sequence of 3 additional credits from no more than 2 categories/disciplines in STEM endorsement paths A-D

Arts and Humanities Endorsement offered at YWCPA:

Algebra 2, PreCal, Chemistry, Physics Four levels in same foreign language (2

beyond Foundation), including AP Spanish

Multidisciplinary Endorsements offered at YWCPA:

• 5A: Algebra 2, PreCal, Chemistry, Physics, four advanced courses from any one Endorsement area or from among multiple Endorsement areas

• 5B: Algebra 2, Chemistry, Physics, English 4, and one credit each in Math and Social Studies (PreCal and World Geography or Human Geography)

• 5C: Algebra 2, PreCal, Chemistry, Physics, Four credits in AP, IB, or dual credit courses selected from English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Economics, LOTE, or Fine Arts (including: AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Statistics, AP Calculus, Dual Credit College Algebra? , AP World History, AP US History, AP Government/Economics, AP Spanish, AP English Language, AP English Literature, Dual Credit English I?, AP Computer Science

• What does all this mean for our current freshman – juniors? – Must meet attendance requirements– Must pass the five mandated EOCs – They will graduate on the previous plans

(most will have the CTE endorsement )• 26 credits necessary with four advanced measures

(Scores of 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams, TPSP final product, Dual Credit courses)• Our goal is still distinguished!!

• Compulsory Attendance: – Students must be in attendance 90% of the time to

earn credit (HS courses) or promotion (MS courses)– Once three unexcused absences are accrued,

truancy process begins with warning letters.– Notes must be turned in within THREE days to

excuse an absence. – Failure to remain within attendance standards

could result in an NG – no credit for the course
