NOC sponsored 2016 Irish Heritage Tour open for enrollment
The March 2016 Gateway to the Humanities Irish Heritage Tour, sponsored by Northern Oklahoma College, is now open for
enrollment. The trip, timed to coincide with NOC’s Spring Break, is open to all travelers 18 and older. Affiliation with NOC is
not required, though full-time NOC students may qualify for trip scholarships to help with costs.
Tour members will enjoy four full days in Dublin, two at the beginning of the week and two at the end, and three days in the
south of Ireland, where they will visit Cork, the legendary Blarney Castle, and the Ring of Kerry, among other famous sites. In
Dublin travelers will see St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Book of Kells at Trinity College, Temple Bar, St. Stephen’s Green, and
much more.
The tour is coordinated through EF (Education First) Tours of Boston, which is offering a $100 discount through the end of
May to the first five people who sign up for the tour on the company website.
“This will be a great trip,” said Dr. Donald Stinson, NOC Language Arts Division instructor and the group leader for the
tour. “A group from NOC visited Ireland in 2008, but that was as part of a larger tour that also included England and Wales.
This time we’ll just be focusing on the Emerald Isle, and we’ll be there for St. Patrick’s Day.”
Those interested in accessing more information about the trip or enrolling should visit the EF website at
www.efcollegestudytours.com and enter the tour number, which is 1717741KY. The current cost, before the $100 discount, is
$3,005 for those under 30 and $3,215 for those 30 and older and includes round-trip airfare from Oklahoma City, all ground
transportation, lodging with private bathrooms, daily breakfasts, three dinners, admissions to scheduled attractions, and the
services of a full-time tour director who is an expert on Ireland and its culture.
In addition to the website, information is also available from Stinson at (580) 628-6442 or at
donald.stinson@noc.edu. Individuals are also encouraged to visit the Gateway to the Humanities on Facebook at

NOC Tonkawa hosts ALERRT active shooter training
Over the July 11 weekend the Northern Oklahoma College Security Department, Tonkawa Police Department and law
enforcement agencies across the state participated in Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) on the
Tonkawa campus. This dynamic, scenario-based training
course instructed by subject matter experts is designed to
better prepare first-responders to effectively respond to
acts of violence, such as an active shooter event.
The ALERRT curriculum, developed after the tragedy
at Columbine High School, has become the national
standard in active shooter response training. The first
responders to the Fort Hood shootings on Nov. 5, 2009
had been trained by ALERRT, and credited their swift and
effective response on that day to the ALERRT training
they had received.
Jason Johnson, NOC vice president for Student
Affairs, said, “Northern has placed a high priority on
emergency preparedness and this is one initiative that will
support our goal of strengthening the safety and wellbeing
of the college and the community.”
Local area course participants included NOC security
officers Rick Lowe, Lonnie Rhea and Gary Taylor, and
from the Tonkawa Police Department Deputy Chief Mike
Garcia, Officer Kristen Johnson, Cpl. John Garcia and
Reserve Officer John Kuhlmann.

State Regents, University of Central Oklahoma Host Statewide
Reverse Transfer Workshop Recognizing the need for more citizens with a postsecondary education, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education
and the University of Central Oklahoma recently held a statewide workshop focused on reverse transfers between Oklahoma’s
higher education institutions.
Across the U.S., many students transfer from community colleges to four-year universities without completing an associate
degree. Reverse transfer allows those students to obtain their associate degree once they’ve completed the necessary credits.
This important effort is designed to ensure that all eligible community college transfer students – including those who, due to
various circumstances, may not complete a bachelor’s degree – emerge from college with an earned credential.
The workshop, held on UCO’s campus, was attended by representatives from all 27 public higher education institutions and
five private institutions. Participants received information about current efforts in Oklahoma and best practices from the Credit
When It’s Due (CWID) initiative, a national grant-funded initiative designed to improve implementation of the reverse transfer
process. CWID represents a joint venture of several foundations, including the Lumina Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USA Funds, The Helios Education Foundation and Greater Texas Foundation.
“By the year 2020, 37 percent of all jobs created in Oklahoma will require an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or higher,”
said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. “Degree completion is the No. 1 priority for
our state’s higher education system, and reverse transfer is one of the innovative initiatives we have embraced as part of
Oklahoma’s Complete College America (CCA) plan to increase college degree completion.”
CCA is the most comprehensive and ambitious higher education initiative ever undertaken by the state of Oklahoma. The
goal is to increase the number of degrees and certificates earned in Oklahoma by an average of 1,700 per year, from 30,500
annually in 2011 to 50,900 annually by 2023, a 67 percent increase. In year two of Oklahoma’s CCA initiative, postsecondary
institutions surpassed the annual goal, conferring 3,577 additional degrees and certificates. This achievement follows
resounding success in the first year, in which the number of degrees and certificates awarded increased by 2,945.
Reverse transfer is one of several key initiatives outlined in Oklahoma’s five-point plan to increase degree and certificate
completion. The state plan, which has led to CCA naming Oklahoma the national model, focuses on promoting college
readiness, transforming remediation, strengthening pathways to certificates and degrees, expanding adult degree completion
efforts, and rewarding performance and completion.

ACT college-prep test to be offered to all Oklahoma juniors By Sean Murphy, The Journal Record, AP — 8/20/2015
OKLAHOMA CITY – Every high school junior in Oklahoma would have the opportunity to take the ACT college-
preparatory test for free during the upcoming school year under a voluntary pilot program launched Wednesday by state
education officials.
State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister announced the plan to use $1.5 million in state funding that’s already allocated for
testing to pay for the program, which gives every public school district the opportunity to provide the tests at schools.
Only about half of Oklahoma’s roughly 44,000 juniors take the ACT test each year, which is the primary test used in
Oklahoma to qualify to attend college, Hofmeister said.
“This pilot, this voluntary, opt-in opportunity, will open the door for 22,000 juniors who would not have access otherwise,”
Hofmeister said.
In previous years, juniors who wanted to take the ACT test would be responsible for paying the $39.50 testing fee and for
transportation to and from off-campus testing sites.
“The advantage of taking it during school is because of the transportation,” said Teria Rogers, a junior at Millwood High
School in northeast Oklahoma City. She said that without the pilot program, she might not otherwise be able to take the test.
“We get to take it with our classmates, with our peers. Also, we get to take it with our teachers who prepared us for the
ACT,” she said.
Hofmeister said there currently are no plans to eliminate any of the state tests students are required to take.
Oklahoma Parent Teacher Association President Brenda Heigl says she hopes the ACT ultimately will replace several end-
of-instruction exams that Oklahoma high school seniors are currently required to pass before graduating.
“We all agree our children take way too many high-stakes tests and we have to put an end to them,” Heigl said. “We’re
hoping this will be the catalyst to make state legislators realize we’re taking too many tests, and the ACT can replace those
tests.”
About 25 percent of Oklahoma residents have college degrees, compared to a national average of about 29 percent,
Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Chancellor Glen Johnson said.
“This announcement today will help our students and certainly strengthen that pipeline to college,” Johnson said.
According to Iowa-based ACT, about 75 percent of seniors in Oklahoma took the test last year and scored an average
composite of 20.7, which is slightly below the national average score of 21.

Online tutoring available An email was sent out to all NOC students to announce the availability of tutor.com, the online tutoring
service NOC subscribed to beginning in the fall 2014 semester. If you are interested in viewing a video for
faculty, describing how the service works, you can go to the following link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi5yckIodOo
NOC employees may run across students who are struggling in their classes and could help them by sharing
the availability of this service, linked through students’ Blackboard page. In addition to the online tutoring
service, students can access schedules for on-site tutoring through the “Tutoring” page on the NOC Website
(under “Student” link). Peer tutors are still being hired in some areas and schedules are being posted as they are
finalized.
If you are a faculty member and have not yet made the tool link to tutor.com available on your Blackboard
pages, you may want to do so as soon as possible so that all students can access this service.
