I knowwehaveprinted several articles relating to therole of theACC committee. However, since it is projectseason,IwantedtomentionagainthattheACCworkshardtotrytomaintainanicelevelofexternalharmonyinourneighborhood.The committee has been busy reviewingyour projects and trying to address anyviolationsof theRestrictiveCovenants.Remember,ifyouhaveanupcomingproject,completetherequestandsendittotheappropriateaddressprintedontheform. Melrose Park is shaping up! The erosion project iscompletebutwestillhaveacoupleofminordrainageissuesto“touchup.”Wealsowillbeginsoontohavesomeofthetrailsrepairedand/orreplaced.So,theconstructionisnotoveryetandwedoappreciateyourpatience. AboutNancyMihalic: Nancy moved to 3400 Crossgate Circle N in 2005. She sharesher home with husband Jeff, son Max, the family dog Lizzie (aSchnauzer), and Misty the horse (who does live off-premise!)Beforemoving toColleyville,Nancy lived inPlano andCanada.SheisoriginallyfromIndianaandmetherhusbandwhilelivinginCalifornia. Gas Drilling and Mineral Rights – WHHA Subcommittee Formed

Last month, we reported that there has been a lot ofconversationaboutdrillingandmineralrightsinourareaandaskedforanyonewithexperienceinthisareatocontacttheBoard.WhileWoodlandHillshasnotbeenapproachedfordrilling,wehaveformedasub-committeetolearnmoreaboutourrightsashomeownersshouldsuchaneedarise. Leadingthesub-committeewillbeZackBryant,alongwithacoupleofvolunteers.TheirrolewillbetoconnectwithotherareaHOA’stobuildanetworkofsupportandconductresearchaboutnegotiatingformineralrightscompensation. Youmaywanttolookatyourdeedtoseeifyouhavemineralrightsforyourproperty.Wehaveheardvaryinganswerstothatquestionandtheonlywaytoknowforsureistocheckonyour specific deed. If you are contactedby agas company, please contact amember of the sub-committee so that we may present a unified responseandnegotiation. WHAT TO DO WITH BABY BIRDS OUT OF THE NESTSubmitted by Darlene Page

Soonerorlater,nomatterwhereyoulive,you’llcomeacrossababybirdontheground.You’llhavetodecidewhetheryoushouldrescueitorleaveittofendforitself.Althoughthenaturalparentsdoamuchbetterjobatraisingtheiryoungthanwecouldeverdo,leavingababybirdwhereitwillbeattackedbyadog,cat,orroughlyhandledbychildreniscruel.SinceI’vebeenaskedwhattodointhissituationseveraltimeslately,IthoughtI’dprovidesomeguidance. Finding fully feathered birds: If the bird is fully or partiallyfeathered, chances are it doesn’t need your help.As young birdsdeveloptheysoonoutgrowthelimitedspaceofanest.Theyoungbirds, referred to as “fledglings” or “branchers” at this stage, typically leavethenestandmoveaboutonthegroundandonlowbranchesfora few days before they can fly. Their parents are nearby and continue tocareforthebirds,answeringtheirdemandingcallswithregulardeliveriesoffood.Thescoldingcallscomingfromthenearbytreearelikelytheadultbirds,voicingtheirdisapprovalwhiletheywaitforyoutoleave. Unless injured or in danger of being attacked by animals orimproperly handled by small children, the fledgling bird should be leftwhereitis. Finding naked birds or birds with beginning feathers: If you find anuninjurednestlingthathasfallenorbeenpushedoutofitsnest,replace it in thenest. If thenesthas fallendown (commonafterwindstorms),replacethenestinatreesecurelywiththebabybird(s)init.Itisnottruethatbirdsabandontheirchicksifapersontouchesthem.Birdshaveapoorsenseofsmell. If you can’t find the nest or accessing it is too dangerous, put the baby bird where its parents can find it but where it will be safe from cats. Use a small plastic berry basket, margarine tub, or similar

container(orevenanEasterbasket)linedwithshreddedpapertowels(nocottonproducts,whichtendtotangleupinbirds’feet).Withanailorwire,fastenthemakeshiftnesttoashadyspotinatreeortallshrubnearwherethebirdwasfound.Next,placethenestlinginside,tuckingthefeetunderneaththebody. Theparentswillusuallycomebackinashorttimeandwillfeedthebabiesinthecontainerjustasifitweretheoriginalnest.(Often,youwillseethemothergoingbackandforthbetweeneach“nest,”feedingbothsetsofbabies.) Times when you should consider quickly getting the bird to awildliferehabilitator:

If the parents don’t find the new nest within two hours, or if you arecertainthatthemotherofababybirdisdead;if the bird is hurt or sick (unable to flutter wings, bleeding, wings droopingunevenly,weakorshivering),orthebirdwasattackedbycatordog,callawildliferehabilitatorimmediately.Thelongerthedelay,thelesschancethebirdhasofsurviving.Whilewaitingforarehabilitatortoarrive,pickthebirdupwithyourglovedhandsandplaceitinawell-ventilated,coveredboxorpaperbagthatispaddedwithpapertowels.

Keepthebabybirdwarmandinaquiet,darkplaceuntilitcanbepickedupbyawildliferehabilitator.Ifthebirdiscold,putoneendof the bird’s container on a heating pad set on low. Or, fill a zip-top plasticbag,plasticsoft-drinkcontainerwithascrewlid,orarubberglovewithhotwater.Wrapthewarmcontainerwithcloth,andputitnexttotheanimal.Makesurethecontainerdoesn’tleak,ortheanimalwillgetwetandchilled. Donotgivethebabybirdanyliquids(theygetalltheyneedfromtheirfoodandveryoftenwillinhaleanyliquid). Washyourhandsaftercontactwiththebird.Washanythingthebirdwasincontactwith-towel,jacket,blanket,petcarrier-topreventthespreadofdiseasesand/orparasitestoyouoryourpet TexasParksandWildlifehasmadeavailablealistofpermittedwildliferehabilitatorsinthestateofTexasforyouruseshouldyoufind a wild animal in need of assistance.
