The little word ‘zu’ is a verypowerful word because it triggers off a sound change.Look at what happens to the words ‘der/das/die’ if

they follow the word ‘zu’!

Wie komme ich zu dem (= zum) Markt?(How do I get to the market?)

Wie komme ich zu dem (= zum) Kino?(How do I get to the cinema?)

Wie komme ich zu der (= zur) Kirche?(How do I get to the church?)

But how would you know whetherto say ‘zum’ or ‘zur’?Easy! All you need to learn are thecolours! If it’s a blue word (masc) or agreen word (neuter)you have to say ‘zum’. If it’s a redword (fem.) you have to say ‘zur)
