Mimi and Papa Bear,
Congratulations on reaching such a
tremendous milestone in your life. The love between you both is so great; fifty
years together is just another way of showing your love. Thank you so much for everything you have done for me and my family. I love you both and wish you the best of luck in
years to come.
Your granddaughter, Blair
June 27, 2009Dear Mom and Dad-
Happy 50th Anniversary! It seems like only yesterday (24 years ago) that
we were celebrating your 26th Anniversary; days before our wedding. In our pre-marital
counseling, we were told that marriage would make our individual triumph’s in life
twice as fun and our individual problems and consolations in life half the burden of going through them alone. While love doubles the successes in marriage, it also cuts in ½ the pain that occurs in life. Though the phrases used in marriage vows about ‘sickness and health’ or ‘for richer or poorer’ are thrown around; their meaning becomes clearer the
longer a marriage lasts.
As all of us reflect on your shared lives together; we often think back to what makes a good marriage and the evidence of your lifelong
commitment is apparent. From our perspective, we have tried to pass on to our
children that the only real measure of ‘success’ is commitment to God and to each other. The results of your love are found in
the successes of the children you have raised. We have attempted to follow your example – the result- three loving couples
and nine grandchildren to carry on the legacy you have shown to each other. None of this
would have been possible without your commitment, grit and determination over 50 years to invest your time and energies into
your family, putting them first.
Thank you for your unfailing love and commitment to one another and to us. Both
of you together created a home that provided us with the chance to continue that
circle of commitment into the next generation. We always knew that you loved
us and would support us in whatever we would do but the most important value you passed on to us is to value commitment and love, following in the footsteps of those that
have gone before.May God Bless you on this very special day!
Love,Julie and Bill
Dear Charlie and Jan –
Congratulations on your 50th! It’s quite an
accomplishment in today’s world, though we’re not surprised you both made
it! I almost remember that day – Dick doesn’t at all
(course he wasn’t part of our lives then), but your
picture is wonderful – both as a reminder and look
how young you were!! Our love and best wishes for you on this your special
day!
Love, Dick and Noel
Dear Mom and Dad,
Wow…. What a ride it has been over the last 50 years. Look around you to be assured the fruits of your labor have been
well worth it.
A famous philosopher once said a wedding anniversary is the
celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance, and
tenacity. The order varies with any given year!!!
I…no I really mean we…. thank you for everything as you quietly and gently led us
through our successes and failures of life
Love,Chuck, noemi, matthew, chad,
scout and sky Wyatt
Happy 50th Anniversary!!!
Dear Mimi and Papa-bear,
Happy 50th Anniversary! I love you both so much! Thank you for the
many good times in Louisiana! I had so much fun! I hope I
can come many more times! I’m
looking forward to seeing you soon! Have an amazing anniversary! Love
you!

Dear Mimi and Papa Bear,Happy 50th Anniversary.
I am so happy for the two of you. Fifty years is a huge landmark
in ones relationship. I know that you have always been there for
me throughout my life. You helped me while I was in high
school learning about responsibility. You helped get
me into college and stay on the right track during my stay. Your
random visits always brightened my weekend.
Throughout every turn in my life, you have been there to
support me. I couldn't ask for better grandparents.
I know you have been through many trials in your relationship.
You have not always been on each others good side. In a time
when people divorce over the smallest argument, it is re-
insuring to see relationships that are strong. That are
lasting. That have made it through the trials and
tribulations that come with marriage.
Congratulations on your 50 years of marriage. I can only hope to have a marriage as successful as yours. I am proud to have
you as my grandparents.Love
Your Grandson,Trey
Dear Mimi and Papa Bear,
Thank you so much for being there for me over all these
years. I love you so much and I pray that your anniversary is as amazing as you are. (Please excuse
the corny expression.)
Anyways, I love you so much! Happy
Anniversary!Love-Sarah
Happy Anniversary Mimi and Papa Bear.
There are so many good memories I
had with you that I could never forget.
There were all of the times in North
Carolina and the new ones in
Louisiana. You guys have been married 50 years can you
believe it! Isn’t that so cool. Well, you
are so much fun and so loved. Have an
amazing anniversary I Love you,
Love -Catherine
Dear Mimi and Papa Bear,
I hope you have an AMAZING anniversary!
We’ve had so many good memories
together!!! Like in North Carolina when Andy, my dad, and I
hiked up the mountain, and Andy wore his
orange hat that he had just made because it started raining. But
then, it started raining so all of the orange
went into Andy’s hair!!! We’ve also had a lot of good memories when we go to Remingtons.
Also, when we reupholstered our living
our chairs!!! We have had many good times and I hope that you
have a great anniversary!!!
Love,Julia
Dear Mimi and Papa Bear,
Have a great time on your anniversary. I hope you have as
much fun or more as the time we got lost
on the way to Blockbuster. I thought I knew
where it was, but I apparently didn’t. So I hope you guys
enjoy your anniversary. Love
you both very much!Love,Andy

Where does a half of a century go? It seems like just yesterday we were at the South Bend Country Club decorating for mom and dad’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. Mom, Dad and Sally are all gone now.
Our kids are grown and in your case their children are now young adults. Where
does the time go?
I tried to find some good pictures from the past but I think you and Sally have them. So I only have pictures in my
memory – it is getting a little rusty with age! I still can remember your wedding
day and that I recorded it on audio-tape – I must have been a geek even as a kid!
I think the prime measure of a marriage’s
success is if your children manage the journey to adulthood without too many scars and are successful . It takes a lot
of luck but it also takes caring and loving parents! We all have ups and downs in a
marriage but yours has been a great success – you have nurtured three great
children.
Now if you two could attend to two issues in the future you would have the greatest
marriage in the world!1. Agree how to get from point A to point B without arguing. I know you are
both right!2. Listen to Dad. “Even in retirement –
save for a rainy day!” - Just kidding!
Congratulations on your 50th Wedding Anniversary! May you have another 25
years!
Love John and Sue - We hope to make it to
Louisiana – in the next year
Dear Charlie and Jan,
Hardiest congratulations from Denver on your golden achievement and welcome
to the club!! Phyllis and I recently celebrated ours as well. Also
special recognition and thanks to your grandson Trey on his graduation
from the Naval Academy. You should be extremely proud of your landmark
anniversary and your wonderful family.Charlie, it was always great fun being in
Mr Leeds homeroom where all us "rowdies" were quarantined in room 114-
I'm sure you remember some of the stunts!! It was always good
playing ball with such a good shortstop (although I usually watched from the bench as a pinch hitter- too bad Harry Hannum took over for Ray Farnham!).I remember riding the bus home from
school to Ridge and Montgomery Road. I can verify for your grandchildren that you and I walked about a half a mile
down Ridge Ave. whereI lived and you had to walk at least another mile down Ridge and over
Section Rd. to Fair Oaks! Tough guy your grandfather!!
It was great getting to play golf with you at our 50th reunion-icing on the cake our
beating Freytag, Young, Wachs and Myers! Hope we get the same
opportunity at our 60th (God willing).
I hope your grandson enjoys the Navy as much as our son Paul has. Paul flew F-14's for six years and will retire as a
Captain from the Reserves this Fall. His daughter graduated
last month from the College of Charleston- probably the same age as
your grandson.
Best wishes to you and your family for a grand celebration! Tip one for me- we'll
be thinking of you!
Your Friend,
Paul
CONGRATULATIONS JAN AND CHARLIE ON 50 YEARS OF A WONDERFUL
MARRIAGE!!!
How LUCKY and BLESSED you have been to have each other for a LONG
and HAPPY LIFE!!
I remember the weekend of June 27th, 1959. I had just graduated from
High School and you had invited me to be one of your beautiful bridesmaids. I was TRULY
THRILLED!! Mother, Dad Mary and I drove over to Cincy in the new
Cadillac and what a BEAUTIFUL AND FUN WEEKEND WE ALL HAD!!!
Your wedding ceremony and reception
was "out of this world"!!! Aunt Sally and Uncle Nelson were so
proud of both of you. They LOVED Charlie like their own son!!
Ed and I have missed many of our Blair
family reunions and we truly regret not having these family memories.
Having a home in the West has complicated out summer plans in
the East. We leave for Jackson Hole today and will spend 12 weeks in the mountains. It is hard to leave one life and pick up on another.
OUR DEAREST LOVE TO BOTH OF YOU
AND ALL YOUR VERY SPECIAL FAMILY!!!
Hugs and Kisses,
Barbara and Ed
CONGRATULATIONS JAN AND CHARLIE. WOW 50 YEARS!!! YOU TWO HAVE BEEN
BLESSED TO HAVE EACH OTHER AND 3 WONDERFUL CHILDREN.
I REMEMBER GOING TO CINCINNATI FOR YOUR WEDDING. THEN THE MILES CAME
BETWEEN ALL OF US AND EVERYONE BECAME BUSY WITH THEIR OWN LIVES. I ALWAYS KNEW MY COUSINS WERE OUT
THERE AND WOULD KEEP IN TOUCH WITH EVERYONE THRU MOM.
I REMEMBER THE FAMILY RENUNIONS
WHERE WE WOULD ALL COME TOGETHER AND CATCH UP ON OUR LIVES. THE MOST RECENT WAS IN YOUR LOVELY
HOME IN CASHIERS, NORTH CAROLINA. THAT WAS A WEEKEND I WILL NEVER FORGET. I HAD NEVER BEEN IN THAT
PART OF NORTH CAROLINA AND NOW I KNOW WHY YOU BOTH LOVED THAT PART OF THE COUNTRY. WHAT MEMORIES YOU MUST HAVE. I KNOW THAT MOM WAS SO GLAD SHE WENT AND WAS ABLE TO SEE EVERYONE. WE ALL HAD A GLORIOUS TIME. YOU BOTH WERE GREAT HOSTS SHARING YOUR LIFE AND FAMILY WITH
US.
NOW YOU BOTH ARE CLOSE TO TWO OF YOUR CHILDREN AND STARTING
ANOTHER CHAPTER IN YOUR LIVES TOGETHER. I AM SURE YOU ARE
ENJOYING YOUR GRANDCHILDREN AND MAKING MANY MEMORIES WITH THEM.
JAN AND CHARLIE MAY YOU HAVE MANY
MORE YEARS TOGETHER MAKING MEMORIES AND SHARING WITH YOUR
FAMILY. MAY GOD BLESS YOU BOTH AND KEEP YOU IN GOOD HEALTH.
HUGS AND KISSES,MARYELLENYOUNG
Jan and Charlie: Congratulations on a rare accomplishment; 50 years,
WOW!
Charlie, we had great times together which seemed to revolve around baseball. One memory I'll never
forget is when you and I, as freshmen at Walnut, were selected by coach Farnum to suit-up with the
varsity for a district tournament game. They scrounged-up some
sorry-looking uniforms for us, and off we went on the bus with the
varsity players.
As I recall, the game was against West High. Walnut had a good team, and
my hero was first baseman St. Clair. He was very nice and
supportive of me on the bus ride. I was so crushed that we lost.
I guess Farnum had great hopes for
us.. To bad Hannum didn't feel the same way about me.
Again, Congratulations. Stay healthy
and continue to enjoy the magic you share.

Jan and Charlie, Congratulations on reaching 50 years together. Sandy and I are looking forward to the trip this
fall to learn more about our ancestors and to have fun
remembering our lives together. It will be great!!

As to a story I would like to ask Jan and Charlie to answer a few
questions about their wedding night and the first night of their honeymoon. So, here are the
questions:!. Have Jan and Charlie
describe the creative evening attire for their wedding night that was so thoughtfully made by Aunt Ann, Uncle Don , and
Noel. Please have them describe in detail, and you must remember that this was in 1959
and not 2009.2. Have Charlie describe the pajamas he wore for the first
night on their honeymoon and what was Jan's reaction to
them.
I hope they still remember these two evenings but if not,
Noel has the answer to #1 and I have the answer to #2.
Happy Anniversary – June 27, 2009
What an amazing time it is to be able to share this special
moment with you two. You’ve taught us what it means to truly love each
other over all these years. Here’s a quick poem:
Hope the start and the moon that shine above reminds you of your special love…
So beautiful and lasting too and just as warm as both of
you
Happy Anniversary!Love,

Jan and Charlie,First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! How lucky Lafayette was to get you. I have been so impressed with how quickly you gave to a community that you had barely
had time to get to know. You immersed yourselves into our
town civically, immediately, and have made a difference quickly.
Your involvement has made Lafayette an even better place to live. This is what makes Lafayette
so very different than so many places in America. People like you, who give much more than
you could ever receive back. So, thank you for everything you have
done and will continue to do for Lafayette and Acadiana, but most
of all on this occasion, congratulations on 50 years
together.Sincerely,
Joey
What to say about Mr Chariie and Mrs Jan Well to start off they are two lovely people both inside and out. It sounds cliche but it is very much true. I have
become close to each of them through their
tireless work with the Acadiana Symphony
Orchestra. Both of them are always up for the
challenge and can organize an event
perfectly. Mr Charlie is a kind giving and fun man and Mrs Jan is a spunky matter of fact planner. Perhaps the
thing that I will always hold dear to my heart is the way that they still
look at each other after all these years. Their love for each other is strong and definately
makes an impression on a young person like myself. Wishing you
many more Mr Charlie and Mrs Jan

It certainly is my pleasure to add to all the congratulatory messages that you pair will be receiving for your 50th
wedding anniversary; Two years ago your son
announced that he was not able to participate as well as he would prefer on the ASO
Board but offered up his Father as a substitute - of course what he did not tell us at the time, was that we would not only be getting a
dynamo replacement but also one of the sweetest and talented women I have yet
to encounter!!! The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, and Ande
Hakeman personally, are blessed to have you both.
Ande Hakeman

Congratulations, Jan and Charlie!!!
Whenever I think of you two and all the things we shared
when we lived on Grape Road and you lived on
Carew, I can not help but remember “basket ball
shoot outs”, “Halloween Parties”, “Chopping wood in Crosby to save on firewood with dire consequences”, “The Garden Club”, and
“Duplicate Bridge”. Roger and I celebrated our 50th
two years ago and loads of memories came flooding
back. I hope you have a wonderful
year and have had something great planned to
celebrate. We truly miss seeing you and are thrilled
you now live so close. Hopefully, we can get
together for a long visit. Let’s keep in touch!
Love,
Gayle and Roger
Congratulations on your 50 years.
We first met you upon moving to Houston in 1965 because our friends in Chicago, the
Peays told us to call you. I remember arriving at your house on Carew one
evening to be greeted by bat man in full dress. (Chuck) I also remember your telling us that you would help us get
settled and could fill us in on doctors etc. One of those gifts was Ed Heyne who has been our dentist for 40 years even the 6 years we lived in Atlanta on trips back to Houston to our corporate headquarters. I
was glad when you moved to Queensbury, and then there was bridge club and Holy Spirit Church. Your girls and mine became friends in Sunday
School.
We still remember the delightful afternoon we spent with you for a superb lunch at your fantastic Cashiers home. What an
elegant way to retire. We will be in the mountains (Maybe) in October. We will
call you.
The two of you sure don't look any older than this picture!!!!!!!!!
Our best wishes for many more years.

Dear Jan and Charlie...Thinking of
you both on this special occasion
celebration. "Life's truest
happiness is found in the friendships
we make along the way."
"Friends share special times
together"..I am thankful that we have had some special times together. Your
friendship has been so wonderful...thank you. The memories
of our times together are very
dear to me. Have a wonderful time with your memories and celebrate a great
milestone. Love, Bettsy
I don't have any photos. etc.; but I do have a lot of fond memories of the many ways in which this
wonderful couple touched my life.
It started when Mary mentioned that her Shoe Hut buddy, Jan, had a daughter about to be married when our daughter, Carol, was also engaged. Needless to say the Mom's had a lot to talk
about other than shoes. Subsequently, years latter, while we were looking for a smaller place to live, Jan called, out of the blue, to invite us to look at The Fairways. This led to dinner at their house with neighbors and , shortly thereafter,
we bought a lot, built a house, moved in, joined Willow Fork, became regulars a Charlie's table
for Wednesday Night Buffets and were included in a variety of neighborhood activities.
Unfortunately, during this same period we learned
that Mary had cancer and early in 2000 she passed away.
Thereafter, Jan and Charlie were very supportive
and invited me to Cashiers for a short vacation only to discover that I had developed a prostate infection, which required Charlie to drive me to the hospital during a rainstorm in the middle of
the night. They were very concerned and I'm sure Chuck received at least one call for
advice; but I was very embarrassed and determined not to be a kill joy so, equipped with a catheter, I completed my visit, and
thoroughly enjoyed myself including playing as Charlie's partner in a local Member Guest
tournament, which we won!
The most recent chapter began with a dinner at their house where I got acquainted with Pam, who later sold their house and is now my wife.
Please pass on my thanks and congratulations to
this truly great couple!!
Joe Kelly
Congratulations on your 50th
anniversity and knowing the two of you and your devotion to each other, I expect to
come to the 100th party! Best
wishes, Connie and Phil Haire PS The one bad thing
we think about you is your
moving from Cashiers.
Happy Anniversary Jan and Charlie
How fantastic to be married for 50 years
and have such a wonderful family and so
many friends all over the world.
You both made such an incredible difference in so many lives in Katy; it was just a blessing to
have you in the Fairways and part of
Willow Fork. You were always creating fun and friendships and in my
case – marriage! If not for you, I doubt Joe and I would have ever found each other, and what a shame that would have
been.I offer a toast to many,
many more years of happiness and good health and special
friends. You are truly lovely people.

the years . . . Love, George &

I've only known your parents a year. We are both( your
parents and my husband and I) new to Lafayette and your mother and I have a mutual
love of cooking. Your mother, as you know, is Chair of the Symphony's 25th Anniversary. She is very good at convincing
people to do things (I'm sure you know that too!).
Anyway, she convinced me to take on the task of creating a cookbook in
honor of the Symphony. My first meeting with her
consisted of pouring through her vast collection of
cookbooks for ideas and then "signing out" a few to take home with me. She is
so organized that she actually has a lending library
- I was quite impressed. I know you father helps her
stay organized - it really is a match made in heaven and it's wonderful to know both
of them. The love and friendship for each other is
lovely to see.

Dear Jan and Charlie,
What an honor it was to celebrate your 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends! Congratulations on
this milestone in your marriage and on your
remarkable family! I have truly enjoyed getting to
know you and Charlie during our campaign to benefit the
Acadiana Symphony Orchestra and its 25th anniversary season.
How lovely and appropriate that we have come together to celebrate both silver and
gold! The two of you are treasures to those of us
fortunate enough to know you and to our community for your tireless efforts on
our behalf.
Best wishes!

I made a little drawing and changed a few things. Charlie, I hope you like wearing electric
blue tuxes.Jan, your wedding dress is not as
luminous a white as I’m sure it must have been on your
wedding day,and though you most likely did not
wear such garish lipstick (I happen to like red.)
or carry a big red flower, as an artist, I can take those liberties.
Some things I can change, some I can not replicate.
Jan, thrilled with Charlie, eyes filled with a bit of
mischievousness. Charlie, happy, relaxed, sure, a rock.Though I’ve not seen this photograph before, I am not surprised you both have the
same look todayas you did the day you began your
journey through life as a married couple.
Happy 50th Anniversary!
We first met Jan and Charlie in Greenville,
SC, in connection with the William Holland Thomas Symposium they sponsored in
Cashiers, NC. We took to them like ducks to
water, and they reciprocated. Although we have known them only a few years, we
feel like we have known them all of our lives,
and they are very special and dear friends. We have
exchanged visits in each other's homes,
and we look forward to more of the same. You 3 kids are so lucky to
have Jan and Charlie for your parents, and we are so lucky to have
them for friends in our golden years! Our
warmest congratulations!

Jan and Charlie,
Congratulations on having reached the milestone of 50 years together! You have
been such a blessing to us in Cashiers and we miss you dearly. We have a couple
pictures that will remind you of all the time and effort you put into the Zachary-Tolbert
House and the Historical Society to make it what it is
today. Loved seeing you at the
Symposium.
God's blessings on you for many years to come.
