Provisioned in minutes, depending on instance storage size. Option to decrease instance storage to minimum required by chosen image to help reduce provisioning time.
Virtual machines (VMs) can be provisioned as standalone servers or in combinations to build sophisticated configurations, including load-balancing and resilient architectures.
Private images can be built on one virtual machine configuration and migrated to a configuration of a different size, within the limitations of the base IBM image.
Prices start under 10 cents per hour* for a virtual machine including operating system. Reserved capacity options provide pools of resources for immediate use at discounted rates.

The IBM SmartCloud offering is designed to address the key client concerns of security, reliability and control.
Security. Built into the solution, ranging from tight physical security of the IBM SmartCloud centers to intrusion protection systems and vulnerability scanning of the IBM SmartCloud infrastructure. Optional security options such as virtual private networking can help you extend your existing security disciplines to the cloud.
Reliability. Around-the-clock monitoring and management of the IBM SmartCloud infrastructure with a service level agreement. Features like ‘anti-collocation’ and ‘virtual IP addressing’ help enable you to build resiliency into your cloud server environments.
Control. Web-based portal allows authorized users to log on at any time and monitor, manage and control their virtual environments. Administrator/user roles provide enterprise level control of cloud assets and spending. Built-in RESTful APIs allow you to customize and automatically control your cloud server capacity.

Potential Pitfalls with Cloud Business Case
– A true business case should exist. Don’t go “cloud” just to do the latest thing.– Usually not beneficial unless true business case exists
Commitment at Organizational Level– Commitment must be made at high levels within the organization– Cloud doesn’t mean outsourcing. Although staff repurposing is possible.– Fewer things to manage with standardization and automation enables
repurposing and/or refocusing
Application Optimization for Cloud– Not all applications are ready for cloud or virtualized environments– Push software vendors for cloud-friendly licensing models
Infrastructure Readiness– On-premise equipment sufficient to build private cloud?– Is bandwidth sufficient for expected communication with public cloud?
Workload needs to be ready for cloud and fit appropriate cloud delivery model (public, private, hybrid)

Cloud’s Impact on Resources
Contract administration – IBM integrates with your existing procurement and contract administration– Pay-as-you-go introduces new challenges, such as lack of not-to-exceed
pricing– IBM cloud offerings provide mechanisms for administrators to limit user’s
potential usage
Customer technical expertise– Technical resources will be focusing more on managing virtual environments
than physical systems– Staff repurposing possible as repetitive, time consuming work is now more
automated– Higher paid resources can focus on tasks more core to business

Security is built into the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise offering.
Virtual infrastructure Hypervisor based isolation with customer configurable firewall rules Physical firewall and IPS/IDS between guest virtual machines (VMs)
and Internet Connections are encrypted and IBM is isolated from VMs by design
(SSH keys) Customer has root access to guest virtual machines allowing further
hardening of VMs Images patched and scanned regularlyManagement infrastructure Access to the infrastructure is only enabled using Web identity through
the user interface portal or APIs Complies with IBM security policies, including regular security scans Controlled and audited administrative actions and operationsDelivery centers Customer data and VMs are kept in the data center where provisioned Physical security same as for IBM’s internal data centers
